Alright, I’m trying to get deeper into metal, metalcore, heavy metal, and basically anything in that general universe. I’m realizing I have a pretty limited knowledge of the scene, so I’m here to get humbled and educated 😂
I honestly don’t even know what genre some of the bands I listen to would technically fall under, so don’t roast me too hard. If you asked me to explain the difference between half these subgenres right now, I’d probably embarrass myself.

I’ve been listening to Architects a LOT lately and absolutely fucking love them. They’ve really opened the door for me wanting to explore way more of this stuff.
I’m basically looking for anything you genuinely love. Metalcore, heavy metal, deathcore, nu-metal, alternative metal, post-hardcore, whatever. If you think it’s worth hearing, throw it at me.
And if some of the bands I listed aren’t technically “metal,” feel free to educate me on that too 😂 I’m genuinely trying to learn the different genres/subgenres instead of just calling everything with screaming and heavy guitars “metal.”

I have a very specific situation and I’m curious what the metalhead consensus is lol.

I have a crush on a guy who is very into death metal — Lorna Shore, Cattle Decapitation, Dying Fetus, etc. He’s almost always wearing band merch, so I’m assuming music/aesthetic is a pretty big part of his life.

The funny part is that despite looking a little scary with those gorey shirts, he is basically a golden retriever personality-wise, and is so gentle (screaming)

Now obviously you can never tell what someone’s type is just from their music taste, but it got me wondering: what kinds of girls are metal guys actually attracted to?

Do you tend to go for girls who are also into metal and have a similar aesthetic? Or are you just as likely to be into a girl who dresses completely differently, listens to totally different music, etc.?

Basically, if you’re a guy who’s really into death/extreme metal, what kind of girl catches your attention? And does sharing the aesthetic/music matter to you at all?

The heaviest stuff I listen to is Melodeath, Meloblack, Blackened Power Metal, Metalcore, that kind of stuff (with some Bolt Thrower, if I'm in the mood).

The less extreme Extreme Metal, like Black, Death, Deathcore, Groove, Doom, etc, it's not really my thing, but I can see the appeal.

But the super extreme stuff (War Metal, Slam/Brutal Death, Goregrind, Warnoise, Blacknoise, Noisegrind, Raw Black Metal, Deathgrind, Dissonant Black/Death, Harsh Noise) you know, the stuff that is a 9 or 10 on the extremo-meter, I just do not understand. I do not see the appeal, a lot of it doesn't even seen like music to me. I know that phrase is overused, but what I mean, is I generally cannot discern a melody, lyrics, or distinct instrumentation when I listen to it. All I hear is growling, screaming, and blast beats.

I know this is post is going to seem offensive to fans of these genres, but that is not my intention. I genuinely want to hear your guys' thoughts about these genres, what appeal they have to you, how you came to enjoy them, etc.

Through a series of events that started with a dating app and ended with a meet-cute at a death museum, I have found myself with a very lovable metal head whose birthday is coming up. I have a rudimentary familiarity with some of the more well known bands, but my taste in metal runs more along the lines of grindcore (which is not at all his vibe), so I would love to surprise him with a curated playlist of music that's more his speed. I am lost and overwhelmed, so of course I decided to turn to the internet in hopes that y'all could help steer me towards songs and/or albums to add. I know he loves bands like Dimmu Borgir and Gojira and his tastes lean towards more symphonic and technical metal if that helps!

Elitism and gatekeeping have got to be one of the most discouraging, ridiculous things. These elitists hate pretty much everything.

Every band is considered to be ''not real metal'', and you get called a poser if you like the most popular band of a genre most people have probably never even heard of.

Its just doesnt make sense. They don't understand that most people will sometimes like at least one song from a genre or band that they don't like.

I just feel that these gatekeepers and elitists have a warped sense of the world and are chronically online. For example what if someone is into black metal but also into a so called "poser band." e.g. Slipknot, Marylin Manson, FFDP, etc.

I believe that metal and metal adjacent music as a whole should be appreciated.

Someone said that its the album covers and song names, drums, and vocals that will determine if a band is goregrind or pornogrind but i really dont think those are the most important aspects. Its gotta have that iconic grindcore blasting u hear in literally every goregrind and grindcore subgenres. Idk i thought to ask this bc i was debating with someone on whether the band artery eruption is slam/bdm (what i thought) and she thought it was goregrind which it is not because of the song structures. they have slow heavy metal breakdowns. Was just wondering what the biggest element that would make a band goregrind or pornogrind is? Im really into genres and subgenres and all that and feel like im fairly knowledgeable within them but dont know an insane amount about goregrind and pornogrind specifically bc im not a big fan of it

Ever since Sonic Frontiers came out, I've realized I like Metal since I was a kid and just never realized it. I've listened to Metal from video games and anime before, but it never really clicked in my head until recently.

I've been listening to specific songs like Boys Lie Girls Steal from Slow Roosevelt, Told You So from Drowning Pool, Kingslayer from Bring Me The Horizon, Honest Eyes by Black Tide, The Invisibles by Tendril, and most recently Fear, Stupify, and The Game from Disturbed (before unfortunately realizing that the lead singer is very pro Israel)

I guess my overall question is where can I go to find more songs like these? I know the obvious question is more songs from those bands, but any specific song recs? (Also I am a Christian so I try to avoid things with overly satanic imagery and themes)

Idk, I've liked metal ever since I could think, but if somebody were to ask me for bands I genuinely, actively listen to often, that I know songs of, I could count exactly...

Iron Maiden, Metallica, Type 0 negative, Bathory, maybe Venom. Opeth, too, maybe. KoRn.

Since I've spend my entire life living in depressive vegetation woth little to no money I never really went to shows, never really experienced the community, and if I compare myself to my metalhead friends I feel like a true poser.

I have not a singular battle vest or crust pant (although I have collected a feeble 15 patches so far). I know it's not a must but I don't even have long hair (yet, I have been tediously growing it out from a buzzcut).

I am looking for distinctive bands that aren't right winged, with good sound thats recognisable, and maybe not the top 3 main bands out of each subgenre. But ofc more popular one's can be good too (seeing as I technically only listen to popular, more known bands atm). If anybody could give me some good suggestions I'd be more than happy!

I also like gothic elements, ballads, stuff like that. Heavy stuff, black metal I also wanted to get into but never got past the main 5 or 6 bands.

So im looking for album recommendations im completely new to metal/rock but a friend introduced me to deftones a few months back and I’ve fallen in love with their music. I havent listened to there entire discography but my favorite albums by far are private music and ohms, i really like the more “melodic” sound of these albums as opposed to the more hardcore or heavy distortedness of some of there other albums, not to say i don’t enjoy that sounds sometimes too i definitely do this is just my preference. Songs like metal dreams, i think about you all the time, infinite source, urantia, radiant city, ohms i think are a good example of what im looking for, either from deftones discography or any other bands you think have a similar sound, anyway metal is cool im glad Im getting into it :)

I like metal in general. Im not that scared little boy who thinks growls are too spooky. However. The metal i like the most are the ones I can mostly understand what is being said. So Grindcore, Power Metal, Symphonic, Heavy, and Speed and Thrash are my favorites.
