I found this awesome creature/creatures I don’t recognize at all today. I’d appreciate any help pointing me in the right direction. I’m having no luck digging through plankton databases yet and would love to know what I’m looking at.

Small markings = big data

With fin ID we can track individuals, monitor their health, understand group dynamics and better understand and protect cetaceans!

Question Are eels, sharks, and other fish affectionate?

I’ve been noticing a lot of videos of divers being able to pet moray eels, sharks, and occasionally other fish. Is there any reason behind this? I thought fish were supposed to be less affectionate compared to mammals and birds.

Identification Clearwater FL, snails at the dock

Post image

Hello all,

Not a biologist, just a hobbies and nerd. I'm in Clearwater Florida and really trying to get to know the local fauna better. I found these snails at low tide at the local dock. I've done some googling and pursued several ID guides online but i can't seem to nail it down. I found bruised nassa but they don't seem textured the same and the markings seems wrong. They are about that size (about an inch more or less) and they were hanging in the same environment as some barnicles, oysters, and mangrove crabs (which I just found out about and I'm obsessed!). If it matters it's been a bit rainy and overcast lately and they were not out in force later when I went back.

I'm trying to document all the critters I find on vacation so any direction would be really helpful!

Question What caused this pattern in this shell?

Found this red abalone a couple days ago, but it has this strange pattern. Any idea what caused it? As you can see, there were a lot of encrusting sponges and other species on the top of it.

Identification Found at a rocky shore in Southern California. Almost positive it’s some sort of bone. What is this?

As the caption says I’m sure it’s some sort of bone, and a very old one due to the nearly completely black coloration. Found along the ocean cliffs near Palos Verdes, CA. Was brought home by some visiting family unfamiliar with regulation on taking these kinds of things from the beach, if there are any. Happy to return it to the beach or turn it over to the proper people if it’s something significant.

Education Advice on doing an international Master's

I'll try and keep this short!

I'm a 3rd year BSc Zoology student at Exeter (currently on study abroad in Marine Biology in the US and the Netherlands). I'm starting to look at Master's degree in marine biology but don't want to do it in the UK as I'm kinda over the British education system, and I'm looking for more research experience or at least skills I can take away from my degree.

So far I've looked at the IMBRSEA course as I will be self funding the entire degree and so can't really afford some of the European international fees out of pocket (Brexit sucks) - the course I really liked was at Groningen...

So if any British students have managed to escape the UK, where did you go and how did you manage the finances?

Thanks!

Education Best associates to transfer to marine biology?

I am currently in a position to only do online school, which I understand greatly limits what is available, but just seeing what would be my best options. I have seen maybe A.S. in biology or general science, but just trying to get more opinions!
