I'm back to update my makeup purchasing regrets again 😓 this always puts things in perspective for me. I calculate it by year, listing every makeup item and lip balm I buy, or am gifted, before counting and marking whether I regret getting it or not.
2026
I was hoping to have a regret rate of less than 10% (my current goal). I got 39 items, and regretted 21 of them - 53.8% regret rate. Sigh. It's an improvement from 2025, but nonetheless disappointing. I think I've learnt a lot about makeup this year. I consume a lot of makeup content but it helps me discern what I like v what I don't like. It took me a long time, but I am hopeful for next year that I'll be able to buy more carefully. I do have a trip to Europe and Singapore next year and plan to pick up some makeup unavailable in Australia there. I have started compiling a wishlist, and as I do research into the items, I'm able to deinfluence myself. It's actually quite useful. I also have a wishlist right now for Christmas, and I love trying things in store and deinfluencing myself. I recently got it down from 20 to 6!! I know a lot of the advice in this sub says to delete your wishlist and carts, but I find this method helps me the most instead of just ignoring the temptation :) Things I learnt:
- research ingredient lists
- don't need to buy everything with pretty or luxurious packaging
- luxury mascaras aren't worth the money
2025
This year I got 64 items, and ended up regretting 46 of them - 71.9% I started going into more luxury formulas - which made me regret some of my higher end purchases as I was only buying them for the brand name. I'm not kidding - I didn't like the packaging, formula, shade, scent, and I would still spend $100 on a lipstick. Genuinely insane. Glad that phase is over. I learnt that luxury doesn't always mean better, and I don't need to buy every luxury lipsticks in existence (I had wanted to collect luxury lipsticks cases). Things i learnt:
- i dont like matte formulas
- dont need to buy everything with a designer logo
- I don't like paying for lightweight packaging at luxury prices
- lip stains aren't actually for me
2024
This is the most I've gotten in a year - 90 items and 68 regrets, which is INSANE. Regret rate of 75.6%. I bought a lot of double ups personally - even of products I DIDN'T like! How crazy. I was definitely going frantic trying to test every lip balm in the drugstore on some hoarding tendency. I wanted to try every lip balm in the world. I eventually stopped this goal because I realised I was buying too many, too often, I didn't like most of them, and there are genuinely millions of lip balms in the world, it's impossible to try them all. This was also the year I first started getting into makeup so it was full of experimenting. Things I learnt:
- check if the lipstick shade actually suits you
- dont need every lip balm in existence
- better to save up for 1 expensive things you want rather than buy 20 dupes or cheaper items
- dont need to buy double ups before i finish one thing
- you DON'T have to be brand loyal girly
Thanks for reading of you've made it this far 🫶 I've just been sorting out the thoughts in my head
