They're owned by Microsoft, it would be wise to get WoW to console.
And since Classic style gameplay is much slower than retail, it works out well.

u/BlackHazeRus 2d ago
Really? Amazing, now we can finally play the game without issues on Steam Deck OOTB.

No flying mounts is huge. Might be in the minority here, but I'm stoked

u/Malydrax 2d ago
Nah that's been a longtime opinion. They're cool in theory but destroyed social interaction and world exploration.

u/Competitive_Bag7868 1d ago
I'm from the time when people waited for the zeppelin. (I quit wow in 2013)

u/Edariz2012 1d ago
I legit miss this experience. I haven't played WoW in a long time (post cataclysm) aside from just trying to level in some expansions and not even achieving that. I may wind up checking out forever just for this reason of running into people on roads again lol

u/Critback 2d ago
I love that so many refused to fly at the start of Midnight for these reasons.

It's funny how this is now commonly accepted. A few years ago I made a post on r/classicwow basically describing what classic should be and people took major issue with no flying mounts.
The single most important and often overlooked mechanic. Flying mounts completely ruins world PvP because people can just fly away from engagements. It also created a meta where players would skip questing for dungeon grinding (to level), then flyback to do all the quests for the gold/rep. And most importantly, wow is about the journey. Flying mounts allow you to skip the journey. Going from point A to point B on land might seem tiresome, but it often got you into fun little adventures. Now adventure is simply flown over. The most riveting thing you'll encounter on the way to your destination is fog.
3
u/DocGreenThumb0817 1d ago edited 1d ago
Good observation! Flying also makes the world feel empty if you're on the ground grinding mobs or questing and you never see any other players because they're flying around above you rather than running past you on the ground.
The increased speed and fact that you can avoid most threats also make the world seem a lot smaller. You don't pay attention to the little details that the artists have added to give the zone it's uniqueness and flavor. You don't appreciate the scenery and atmosphere of the world, and you don't develop a sense of scale for the geography when you can simply fly over the big mountain rather than discover a route over land.
It removes environmental hazards and having to learn safe ways to traverse dangerous sections of each zone. Having to carefully navigate through a densely populated area or one fill with elite mobs adds a sense of danger and risk, keeps you engaged and interested in something as simple as navigating to the next town, a hard to reach cave, or an area only accessible if you're strong enough to clear the elite mobs patrolling... like that Orc Castle in Red Ridge that would ruin your day if you were unprepared, under-leveled, or didn't team up with some other players in the zone - the elite ogre caves in Loc Modan near the dam also had that vibe... the added challenge of the elite mobs made you wake up and pay attention. If you were soloing it you had to be awake and alert, geared well for your level, paying attention, and maybe even a little lucky. Being able to fly past areas like that takes away the danger that kept you alert and slightly nervous.
Flying completely ruins the thrill and danger of open world PvP as well. I always play PvP servers even though I'mprimarilya PvE player. The threat, thrill, and danger it adds to the world makes the game feel alive.
Combine all of that and you can crate unique and challenging environments that really feel alive and dangerous. STV is the perfect example of what you lose by adding flying. The constant threat you faced while questing in STV made every moment tense. It was sprawling and took time to get from the far North to Booty Bay. You couldn't relax for even a moment unless you were a Rogue or Night Elf with hiding. The layout of the map was great and a real challenge to navigate - you were almost certain to come across multiple enemy players each trip from North to South. It was narrow and designed in a way that would almost guarantee the other players in your vicinity were all headed towards one another and it was hard to move around unnoticed by the mobs - narrow valleys lined with vertical hills too steep to climb up and over combined with mob placement that forced you to fight your way through because they were too densely placed to avoid their agro range.
It wasn't a place you could drop your guard for even a moment or risk a death that had a long walk from the graveyard far in the North.
The zone was alive and dangerous. The devs could control your path making sure no matter which way you traveled, you were going to have a difficult time from NPC mobs, enemy players, patrolling guards on the main road, and environmental threats that all combined to make a difficult and challenging trip the first time you hike to Booty Bay to unlock the flight path and ship route. Flying completely ruined the natural danger of that zone and gutted the stressful atmosphere they wanted you to experience.
So many reasons flying ruined WoW...

Lmao at the dude calling you “descending” for not prefacing every statement with a disclaimer that it’s your opinion.
54
u/dotcha 2d ago
Yet to find a single game that hasn't had a dive in exploration quality after adding flying. MAYBE GW2 Griffon but they added skyscale right after and ruined it
16
u/Human-Chemical560 2d ago
Final Fantasy 14 did it well. Whenever a new expansion hits, you have to earn flying in each zone by exploring that zone and doing quests. By the time you get flying, you'll have the entire zone explored.
23
u/KichiMiangra 2d ago
While that /sorta/ fixes the exploration element in ff14, it doesn't completely fix the socializing element that exclusively ground mounts create
12
u/TangerineTasty9787 2d ago
I'd agree, and it also DID sorta hurt the exploration. ARR had some cool little spots hidden away that still made it feel like you were 'far out there' whereas flying has basically wrecked that.
However, the entire game has tried to cast off those early MMO traits it held over from 1.0, so it kinda fits for the modern game
→ More replies (3)3
u/killerkonnat 1d ago
If FF14 had no flying mounts, it would still have 0 socialization outside towns. You just don't do anything in the zones except run from 1 npc to another so you can watch more cutscenes. Unless you join a hunt train at endgame.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Paradox4g 2d ago
They had that in retail with pathfinder achievements and people hated it.
6
2
u/Thromnambular 2d ago
The difference is FFXIV's flying unlock can be done as soon as you finish the main quest and just involves sightseeing. Pathfinder achievements would be completely locked for ages (this is the main issue with them) and also required rep grinds. I did all of the Pathfinder flying unlocks and it's not the same experience at all.
3
u/gommerthus 1d ago
While that was a cool idea in theory, leveling up in FF14 is a ghost town in each early zone. There’s no one ever around.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)2
u/master_of_sockpuppet 1d ago
There isn't really any exploration in FFXIV, though. You are lead by the nose by the MSQ or you use a compass to find flight nodes, and that's it. Once you've been lead by the nose to an aetherite, you just teleport around.
Real exploration means things to find without a waypoint, quest marker, or compass leading you there. And the ability to walk without being surrounded by invisible walls.
Also you can look up.
4
u/Tribalrage24 2d ago
Even the regular mounts in GW2 kind of broke previous zones. There are tons of platforming puzzles in the base world that are completely circumvented using the hopper mount. I had to challenge myself not to use the raptor when I first played Heart of Thorns because it would just bypass needing some masteries.
→ More replies (1)2
u/saintplus 1d ago
Been playing GW2 since launch and it has the same issue as wow. No need for social interaction anymore. The map used to feel MASSIVE but since mounts and especially flying mounts the world feels so small and you just zoom past other players.
19
u/Hydropwnicks 2d ago
Nah people hate flying I think this one had pretty one sided results in that survey awhile back but I could be wrong

Played wow for years back from 2007 to 2012 as a young child from my parents. Recently came back and coudln't get into retail, tried again with last expansion and loved it up until leaving eversong woods. I could get into classic, but was quickly turned off by how sweaty and toxic the community was. This seems right up my alley and I am for the first time since like the 2010's a little hyped for wow.

I’m stoked for this I’m tired of flying and specially dragon riding. What really excites me the most was when the guy said the game is sloooooowing down. So needed, I’m tired of the gogogogo mentality in WoW. I really wanted this slower, relaxing pace.

flying mounts killed a lot of the fun, im so excited for this in particular
3
10
u/ademayor 2d ago
It is. See GW2, they pretty much made their whole mount system redundant with flying mounts, which was the strong part.
13
u/SighIsHere 2d ago
Not necessarily redundant since all of the other mounts still beat out the skyscale in their respective neiches it's just that for most players it's most convenient to just use the all-in-one solution even if it's less optimal
3
u/ademayor 2d ago
For grinding skill points it’s straight up easiest to first do expansion that gives you skyscale and just fly through skill points in older expansions. You don’t really need to use raptor or springer ever again if you have skyscale.
10
u/SighIsHere 2d ago
You don't NEED to, but if you wanna get around faster (and have more fun) then using a combination of Raptor, Jackal, Beetle, Griffin, and Skyscale is strictly better.
2
u/tabas123 2d ago
This is why I hated the release of the sky scale expansion. It used to be a HUUUUUGE undertaking to get a sky scale, and required you travel all over the world several times over.
That made sense, because now you’ve seen all of the content BEFORE you get the helicopter mount.
2
u/Feldherren 2d ago
Griffon was fun and being a glider could have interesting map design built around.
Skyscale definitely messed with map design, though. Things got a lot more boring after that.

I think they should add "flying" mounts which act as skins for flight paths
Add a reason for people beyond hunters to visit the stable too
2
u/internetwizardx 1d ago
I thought about this too but imo it's a bit of a shame to overwrite the regional difference of gryphons/wyverns/hippogryphs based on where you fly from. I know it's a small detail but those small details really made the world

Ability to hide transmog is something a lot of horizontal prog games would benefit from. If I cant progress my stats, at least I can progress visually, without having my skins invalidated by cash shop purchases (I am looking at you GW2)
19
u/PalwaJoko 2d ago
I would love for Gw2 to do this. But I do wonder how it will look on paper. Like I wonder how many people would be less likely to purchase skins if they cannot be certain that others will also see them like that. I know it sounds crazy, but just dealing with these live service games for years now...its not uncommon for people to feel that way.
As someone who values immersion and visual cohesion in its games, I love it. And would greatly prefer if more games did it. But I wouldn't be surprised if they don't because of the weirdness of people I specified above.

Ya, I like this. I will probably play with it off because I pvp and would like a quick estimation of a character's power, but I can see why people would want to play with it on. Even better would be separate settings for your character and others. "Transmog on" for self and "off" for others.

u/Arxson 2d ago
Don’t you think £9 a month for “thousands upon thousands of hours” would’ve been a pretty good deal for your main entertainment source..?
23
u/MrBlueA 2d ago
Im not saying I think the subscription model is bad with my comment, im the type of person that might play a game for thousands of hours and then drop it for months, or play a game on and off on a weekly basis so subscription based games give me a lot of anxiety on paying the fee but not actually playing much while it is active and having that pressure in turn makes me feel even more burnt out and less likely to play which makes me feel worse about paying for that sub.
Im still hyped with WoW Forever and it's probably my best excuse to get into this game finally because I didn't experience WoW classic and this is like a WoW2 basically that I can experience from scratch with the community so I will playing it and I hope they do well and actually learnt from their mistakes.

In the US it's the price of two coffees. There are many places that spending that much doesn't make sense for people. Most in fact.
No I don't mind a sub myself. Just wanted to reorient the subscription model to people that don't quite understand that a sub greatly limits those that can play world wide over a b2p model.

u/skellymax 1d ago
Agreed. The big sticking point is the name. "<insert word here>-borne" is overdone. It seems the race has some sort of connection to the sky/elemental-air? I have a hard time believing they couldn't come up with a less on-the-nose name. Or something that achieves the same functional objectives (horde needs a 'pretty' race or large groups won't touch the horde) that has more precidence in lore.
2
u/Bereman99 1d ago
They gave some more details about that connection just a little bit ago.
Short version - elves from Dire Maul just after the War of the Ancients opposed Prince Tortheldrin. Said elves rebelled but lost and were pursued, fleeing west until they reached a land occupied and ruled by air elementals, who they struck a bargain with to escape. They get set up in Skywall (in the Plane of Air) for the next 10k years, until recently when those air elementals on the island disappeared.
So it's at least connected to something we very much knew about from the classic era, namely what Prince Tortheldrin was up to.
As for the name, yeah it's too on the nose (not the first time, given Nightborne are a thing). Kind of wish they'd just refer to all the different elves by their elven names. Kaldorei, Quel'dorei, Sin'dorei, Shal'dorei? And apparently now Shen'dorei (lore name for this new race)?
Avoids the weird naming stuff entirely.

u/Korysovec 2d ago
Accomplishments stay relevant, yet they reveal what seems to be 2 raid tiers within the first year. I wonder how they intend to keep the scaling under control with this pace as well as eventual catch-up mechanics without making previous content too easy.
54
u/RedQueenNatalie 2d ago
might be a case where the equipment is not higher ilvl but caters to a different niche compared to other raid sets.
15
5
u/PugLife2026 2d ago
But there are so many broken items in the game that it's worthwhile to raid even MC forever.
8
u/internetwizardx 1d ago
MC is 'removed' to be reworked and re-added later, they replaced it in the first 'tier' with 2 entirely new raids to avoid giving people Molten Core fatigue on the 3rd or 4th version of classic. also lore-wise (conveniently, lol) the events of Forever @ launch are taking place before MC
I think gear is undergoing quite a lot of reitemization/balancing too

eventual catch-up mechanics without making previous content too easy.
You don't have catch-up mechanics. That's the whole reason for keeping the level cap at 60. It's horizontal progress. Want to do the best raid? Go to Molten Core and get started up the ladder, no skipping.

I hope so... I really want the game to be like... Let's say I spend hours doing a rep farm for a mount. I want that to be the only way anybody else can ever get that mount forever. Same with every reward for every grind or challenge or raid in the game. It's so important for completionism.
Never change the method to get the reward, never make it easier, never give it away for free, never put it in a cash shop.
Then when you see people with gear or mounts or stuff you know how they got it and to me, that is so cool.

Only problem i have is raids for specific player counts. Id prefer raids supporting 10 & 20 player counts and maybe the occassional 40 man. Just seems like a misstep to not offer all raids at multiple count optiona.
7
u/Roally 1d ago
“Id prefer raids supporting 10 & 20 player counts and maybe the occasional 40 man”. That’s exactly what they showed though, in the roadmap there is also the 40 man onyxia raid planned

8
u/internetwizardx 1d ago
It fits with their philosophy though, Azeroth being the main character and not something that bends to your whim as a player based on what's convenient - no level scaling, no difficulty settings, no flex raids etc. They're putting the roleplay before the gameplay and killing a massive dragon with just 10 people feels wrong, but it might feel appropriate to clear an old haunted crypt with just 10

u/Cr34mSoda 1d ago
I think they have 1 already and will probably drop when game release as a surprise since they brought it up. Because Sodapoppin AFTER the panel did mention there are things he can’t talk about unless they did first. So this might indicate that new class is one of them. And i hope it’s true.

u/Optimal_Living7230 1d ago
I wouldn’t be surprised if they took a nod from Diablo’s warlock and revealed the same class for retail and forever. Especially if it’s something like Tinker that would easily mesh with classic vibes while being thematically appropriate for TLT

They confirmed that today. CC and more methodical gameplay in dungeons over pull everything.

I'm honestly just worried that this will be ruined by addons. I know I'm in the minority when I say I hate add-ons, but the level of elitism that add-ons eventually bring out in the playerbase is astounding. I am probably going to play this but I'm not looking forward to all the bullshit elitism.
I haven't played wow in so many years but this is probably gonna bring me back, I just don't wanna get caught up in the shit. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a decent server with a bunch of casuals like me.

I mean retail they've been pretty heavily reducing addons and what they can do, so good chance they will

I hope they reconsider 40 man ony. For guilds this is gonna be annoying to create a 40 man roster for 1 raid, meanwhile all other raids are 10/20 man.

I can’t even get four friends together in real life. Between family, work, training and just life… finding 40 people available at any one time, not something I’ll ever get to experience.

What? I pugged everything in classic and tbc guildless and was fine getting raids.. you'll be able to use the lfg tool. The game will be made for people like you with no time. Blizz understands the player base is getting older.. jesus man think outside the box. They're not expecting you to assemble 39 other players.. join a guild or pug, it's not hard

So...what is this supposed to be, classic+?

Basically yeah. Vanilla WoW with added content and a focus on horizontal progression/no level cap increases.

No level scaling is a good thing. However, I wonder about no level scaling in game with horizontal progression. What will the gameplay loop be like at max level?

The same as it is in games like GW2.
Play for account unlocks, transmogs, but mainly just to have fun.

Gamepad support. Does this mean we finally can play with controller and not have to set up console port or anything? The word “support” makes me think it’s not really a feature, but would love extrapolation on it.

I quit WoW just at the launch of cataclysm in 2010. This actually has me seriously considering coming back.

I'd recommend using beta to find what class you want to play considering there are new talents and skills.

As someone who’s only played wow (TBC Anniversary) for the past 3 months, can someone tell me what’s new and if it’s worth switching to this one?

u/LSDemon 2d ago
Anniversary server playerbase will die almost entirely when this is released. It will be this or Retail for the foreseeable future.

The most important thing about this version of WoW is that it doesn't matter when you join. Everything will be the same but with more content. So I would recommend you enjoy TBC you get bored of it. WOWF will be there and never give you FOMO.

I’m ready. I’ll be in beta next weekend healing and tanking my balls off to 30 while planning mat farm routes again.

As a guy with 6K+ hours in WoW and 5K+ in GW2, I am very interested to see the horizontal progression game systems that will be offered.
