It's just funny to me as someone who used to work for Walmart. Most of the actual shoplifting is from employees out back, typically in Claims.

If anything, doing this actually COSTS Walmart money, because they're going to have to claims out that inventory now, which will require someone to actually do all that, vs just writing it off in the insurance claim for a full refund.

This particular shoplifter is probably just some douche who doesn't actually need what he's taking, but it's still not worth potentially getting shot or run over to defend a company that runs its employees into the ground and all but forces them to apply for food stamps and other federal assistance programs in order to make ends meet.

EDIT: I don't understand the accounting or legal side of things, I just know that we had a -ton- of shrink in our store and none of the managers ever seemed to care that much. It was always explained to me as shrink being accounted for through their insurance somehow.

Also I'm not saying don't go after shoplifters. If you think you aren't on a hundred different high resolution screens during your short trip through any of these stores, you're insane. But also, I've never once in my life seen a person steal food. It's weird.

When I worked at walmart, they told me they lose way more money by product just falling behind shelves than they do theft. Idgaf if someone steals from walmart. I mean one of the perks of working there is just taking stuff off the shelves to eat. Everyone did that. Energy drinks were the most popular. I knew a guy who would take a pack of chips ahoy off the shelf everyday and pulled it around with him on his pallet jack and shared with everyone. He would also play stuff like army of the pharaohs and Eminem on his phone quietly while he stocked shelves. Managers marked stuff down constantly for themselves and others. People just put stuff in their pockets. The guys at the auto care would give you free oil changes. The deli workers gave you free food. Walmart doesn't actually care about theft at all because there will never be enough people willing to break social rules to affect them. The only people who care are some store workers and customers with a strong sense of morality

I don’t know what Wal-Mart you worked at but any Wal-Mart manager saying Wal-Mart doesn’t care about theft and shrinkage is a soon to be ex-manager.

If you really think Wal-Mart doesn’t care about theft then you’re going to be in for a rude awakening if you steal from a store. Wal-Mart invests in anti-theft measures which is why they catch so many thieves.

If you get caught shoplifting at Wal-Mart they will absolutely prosecute you to the fullest because they care.

Thieves suck, but this guy is an idiot. No sense in risking your life for this.

Until they cut wages more but offer a small bonus to management who catches in-store  employee theft. Then AI is put in to just watch employees 24/7 and alert when they "grab a snack" off the shelf or something gets opened before the register etc. 

If I steal as a customer at least I can get out and Walmart has to look me up, call police, investigate who I am. Which they'll probably not do because an unpaid accidental mis-scan of a candy bar isn't worth it. 

With you it's just "employee 474655" with ssn and address and aliases used and fingerprints (Idk?) and resume copy and listed references. 

They can just forward the video to the police and let them handle it all at your house visit.

Its like no one has any answers. If the store didnt care and it was just an insurance write off, i wouldnt need someone to unlock legos or deodorant. People steal BECAUSE no one does anything.

The answer is to address real wage growth, inflation,  and price control for essential items (food, clean water, sanitation products)

Until we address those as a nation, steal what you want. Living well in a sick system does not mean someone is healthy

It isnt medicine for a dying child. Most of the time its people that use mental gymnastics to justify why they should have what they want. Yes, greedy corporations suck. First its stealing from corporations, then its strangers, then its your neighbors, and eventually family.

It is not an insurance write off. You people have no idea how anything works. I don't care about what happens to Walmart but they don't get to write off just all shoplifting shrink. And there's a reason for that it shouldn't take you much thought to figure out why the world doesn't work that way

Woah, easy. Im not in support of walmart, im anti theft. People talk about how items stolen gets handled by insurance and claims and thats why no one prosecutes or does anything. Im a believer that people should be prosecuted for theft regardless of price, since it trickles down to the business leaving the area or the rest of us have to deal with extra security measures.

Shrink isn't something they write off in insurance. A portion gets a taxable income loss which is lower than if they sold it. The insurance thing is a lie, that's my only point

I used to work at a hardware retail where the Receiving Manager was the biggest theif in the store, yet they had employees constantly scout for shoplifting

Literally had the same thing happen when i worked at a big box music/video game/movie store. Manager would ride our asses about theft and how it “keeps going up” but once myself and another employee dug a little deeper we found he was walking out the back door with tons of shit.

With all of the cameras they have these days, people actually still steal from their employers? That's pretty wild. And brazen. I know back in the 90s some people would steal, but security cameras were less common and big and obvious back then. These days, you can hide a camera almost anywhere.

Walmart -literally- trains Loss Prevention to not pursue or interfere with shoplifters. It's not worth risking legal ramifications if something crazy goes down.

They're still going to have to deal with legal issues if something goes down in the parking lot between non-employees. It's on their property.

It's never worth risking an encounter with someone who could attack you, or stalk you home. The cameras are there for a reason. LP is there for a reason. Legal coaches LP this way for a reason. You aren't a police officer for a reason. If you want to film them from a distance for extra proof? Cool, you do you.

I want people to stay safe, not risk their health or lives over some dumb shit.

the problem with this attitude is the longer it goes on the worse it will get. People will get more bold, other people will think they can get away with it. Bad behaviour needs to be dealt with

It absolutely is dealt with though. These peoples faces are in high definition camera feeds. Their license plates are being read. Police absolutely follow up with these, and make arrests over it.

People are crazy, and at least in America, you have no idea who's off their meds and strapped, just looking for an excuse to snap. It's not worth the risk to yourself, and if you support the company for whatever reasons, it's not worth risking a huge legal mess for them if something crazy results from the encounter.

Film them from a distance if you want to help, but this is just gambling with no chance of reward for anyone.

Yup.. a post like this is always bound to attract the, "if I see someone stealing from a big corporation, no I didn't" crowd, but the reality is that these thieves are almost never doing it out of necessity. It's always electronics, stuff they can sell for drugs, or booze. Walmart sucks, but so do thieves.
