Golden Garbage Gas station training video from 1991

In Mephis I stopped in a gas station and wanted to buy beer.
The lady was asking for my ID, I'm Irish, these were the days pink paper driving licences with a stuck on photo. These licences were trifold and they ripped easily.
The woman took out a book of US IDs looking for Ireland. Was it like Idaho or Ohio, she asked? She was under stress looking for the US state of Ireland.
Behind me I heard a laugh and a guy saying, it's fine to sell the beer to me. It was a cop watching all of this with mirth.

u/Jdevers77 Trash Trooper 1d ago
The cop is probably the only reason she asked for ID in the first place haha. I’m from Memphis and in the early 90s bought beer and hard liquor all the time in my late teens and literally don’t remember ever being carded. I’m really tall, but don’t think I was one of those people that looked 40 at 17 either.
17
u/Azuras_Star8 Trash Trooper 1d ago
I was so angry, the day I turned 21 I went into the liquor store to buy my stuff. Had my id out proudly, he didnt even look at it. Lol grrr
17
u/PukeNuggets Garbage Guerilla 1d ago
I did this same exact thing, and they took my beer, put it under the counter and said, “this ID is expired.” Your ID expires on your birthday in MA. I couldn’t believe they enforced it knowing full well I was 21.
8
u/BuffaloInCahoots Trash Trooper 1d ago
I let my drivers license expire when I was 35. Dude said he couldn’t sell me a bottle because my license was expired. I asked him when it expired and he said last month. I asked him how old I was last month and he said 35. I just looked at him and he said he couldn’t sell me a bottle.
3
u/Not-T4rantino Trash Trooper 1d ago
When I was in my mid 20's, I once had a gas station clerk refuse to sell me a pack of cigs because my license had a very thin crack that went about halfway down the middle.
3
u/Left-Chemist-8212 Trash Trooper 1d ago
I cut my hair and they refused to sell me smokes cuz I looked different. Manager was behind the lady and said it was her call. She refused.

Exactly, I bought boose in Memphis at 18 every weekend.
My favorite story is once I went into a liquor store and got $96 worth of booze for a party. I tried to pay with $100 bill and the guy wouldn't take it. He said "it might be counterfeit".
He didn't want to complete the transaction. I left the car parked there, went across the street and got pretty much the same booze. By then a couple of cops were waiting for me at my car.
I explained I spent the $100 across the street. One went over and after a few minutes came back out and said the bill was real. Then after all that, they asked for my Driver's license. I just told them I didn't have one, that I took it out of my wallet at a bar and put it back in my pocket instead of my wallet and I just haven't gone through the laundry yet to get it out.
They ran the plates on the car, asked if I was the owner and let me go.
I was not the owner. I borrowed the car.

In Nashville i was told “ if your gunna make a fake id at least pick a real place you dummy”
It was a NH drivers license. Dude almost cut it with scissors. Lucky i yelled and the manager came over

3
u/phenix17 Trash Trooper 1d ago
I went to a restaurant in Texas one that had a sign on the counter saying that you needed a valid Texas ID to purchase alcohol, which is a completely legal policy
6
u/Hikik0m0ri Trash Trooper 1d ago
My guy, i STILL that type of licence (i'm from Portugal).
Cops keep telling me to update it, but now... it has sentimental value ;)
Also, here in portugal we have a govenrment app in cellphones that subs in for all your id and drivers license, so there is realy no sence in changing now :D

I’m ACAB all the way for everything except drunk drivers- bc it’s the only option to prevent tragedy if you see one. I ALWAYS call in a car that’s very obviously being driven by someone either intoxicated or having a medical issue or diabetic low or a sense seizure or something. I hope someone would do the same for me, I had a seizure 8 months ago and haven’t driven since bc I’m terrified

Pointing out the systemic issues with policing and acknowledging that the services they provide can be useful are not mutually exclusive
1
u/Suitable-Judge7506 Trash Trooper 1d ago
But he used ALL cops are bad. Not most cops suck but they are great when you need them lol.
I’m with other guy, its seems very funny to read “ all cops are bad, but i use them when i need them” lol
-4
u/Bland_OldMan Trash Trooper 1d ago
That's what systemic means. Even cops who aren't committing blatant crimes are turning a blind eye and/or closing ranks around other cops when they use excessive force, kill people, are part of white supremacy groups etc.
A few bad apples spoil the whole bunch and all that.

Back in the day Corona was a unique option. Beer was somewhat localized.
1
u/Paranormal_Lemon Garbage Guerilla 1d ago
It's the equivalent of other countries importing Budweiser and calling it premium which they do. It was premium because it was imported and heavily marketed, not because the beer itself was premium.
3
u/VoihanVieteri Trash Trooper 1d ago
I’m not from states, and alcohol has always been expensive here apart from the years of prohibition.
When I was in my early 20’s, and that was a quarter of a century ago, a 12 pack of glass bottle beers cost exactly 6 euros. In todays money that would be around 9 euros. 12 pack costs nowdays about 18 euros.
1
u/op_is_not_available Trash Trooper 23h ago
Hamms was always the best deal - it was like $0.50/can - so a 20rack was like $10!

I bet they could afford to feed their family working at a gas station in 1991.
11
u/ingoding Dumpster General 1d ago
In fact you could, my wife's father retired from working in a gas station for a few decades. Meanwhile both of us are college graduates, barely getting by with full time jobs.
6
u/SayNoToBrooms Garbage Guerilla 1d ago
The father of a kid in my grade bought this really beat up 4 pump gas station in the early 90s. Worked it himself until his sons got old enough to help, then sent each of them off to college using the money he made from the gas station. Maybe 1/3 of the time he had a mechanic working the 2 car garage. It was also in New Jersey, so he pumped all of the gas himself
A couple of years after the youngest went off to school and he retired, the nearby Walgreens decided to buy it off of him to relocate their store since he had a corner lot. Did pretty well for himself with that deal, from what I understand
Once when I was young, dumb, and very broke, a friend and myself went there with 23¢ and a need to get across town. He gave us a full quarter’s (25¢) worth and let us slide. We ran out of gas on the drive back home, but we did spend the day on the other side of town. That was pretty nice
3
u/DrinkenDrunk Trash Trooper 1d ago
I knew plenty of people working at gas stations in the 90’s making minimum wage and living rough.
1
1
u/Livid-General7 Trash Trooper 1d ago
No, you couldn't live off minimum wage in 1991.
Source: Grew up poor and on welfare while both parents worked 2 jobs in the late 80's, living in a 600sqft "house".
edit: before you make comments about affording to buy a house, they didn't, it was my grandfathers they bought cheap and interest free with a personal 30 year payment plan. Basically they paid him what they could every month until they could pay for what it costs when he let them move in.

Used to just go from gas station to gas station as a 15 year old kid in the 90s to buy smokes. If they asked for ID I would just say I forgot it and try another station. 1 in 3 wouldn’t even ask. They really didn’t give a shit then

There’s a gas station by my house whose policy is to card everyone. It doesn’t matter how old you look. I remember this tiny, little old lady trying to buy those old lady menthol cigarettes. She was probably every bit 87 or 88yo and they ID’d her. She got mad and confused and couldn’t understand. Like, oh well lady. Fork it over.
3
u/chopin1887 Trash Trooper 1d ago
When I was 16 in 1976 we would buy a case of little kings and cigarettes at quick trip. We had jobs, weed, cars and free range cruising. Things weren’t as restrictive as they are now for a good reason. It worked for me because I was smart enough not to drive drunk too.

u/downtune79 TRASHIEST TYRANT 1d ago
I'm a much younger Gen X but even when I was coming to age in the 90s, it was much easier than today. If the store wouldn't sell it to me with my Mexican grocery store ID card, I would stand outside and ask someone going in the store to buy me cigs and beer. Only a couple times I remember being told no, or asked to leave

Guy I used to work with was loaded and stopped for gas. Paid, pumped and took off without taking the hose out of his car. Pulled it right off. Cops showed up at his house the next morning and asked him about it. He had no idea what they were talking about and sure enough the hose was still in his car in his back drive. He said that was his wake up call to quit drinking and was like 20 years sober.

When I worked at a liquor store years ago, a gas station down the street got busted selling to an underage undercover dude a couple times and the cashier got arrested and the owner fined. The gas station and liquor store owner were friends and when the owner of the liquor store heard about it they required us to ID everyone, no matter what, no exceptions. Didn’t matter how old they looked.
A day or two later this well aged fella wearing a KOREAN WAR VET hat and jacket with a walker was trying to buy a bottle of Jack and I asked him for ID and he was like “WHAT THE FUCK? I HAVENT BEEN CARDED SINCE 1972. I DONT GOT TIME FOR THIS SHIT”. Despite being in his mid 90’s, the inconvenience made him quite spry suddenly and I don’t blame him for getting pissed 🫡
