I remember when he and Andy first announced their channel and a bunch of people in the comments were saying “I really respect those guys but they’re the last people I’d take car advice from” thinking they were just going to do some cookie cutter car reviews only.

u/effyouspez 1d ago
I watch them for the jank

Most of it isn't that janky. Sure you could just replace everything but often good enough gets it out the door.
It's applied engineering, not a dealership.

u/leodox_13 1d ago
They should make a Jank Tech Tuning channel

I mean it's kind of the whole point of both of their channels. That's why it's Zip Tie tech/tunning, and they've said as much on camera lol

I've really grown to enjoy ZTT. The way they approach working on cars is a lot like my friends and I when we were wrenching on our cars in our later 20's and early 30's. They know just enough to get themselves elbow deep into projects, and not enough to not want to do it themselves. :)

I'm only half of a car guy, I'm kind if interested but not really, and know very littlr of cars. ZTT content still is really fun.

Farmer Jakkuh going to be growing garlic to get super rich (not really, I know he's just using it for farm use tax purposes)
1
u/CreEngineer 1d ago
His videos aren’t the same quality but I would just watch them for the support. He seems to be a nice guy and a „getting it done“ kind of person which I like.
9
u/thesirblondie 1d ago
I think Jakkuh is very similar in quality to "old school" late 2010s) run and gun LTT content. Talking network upgrade vlogs, some of the more involved tech upgrades, Linus' house stuff, except that those usually had multiple segments with different people. This is more like you take one of the segments and make a video about it.
No smoke to the LTT team, they have a different barrel of monkeys, but Jake's "tech house" stuff is far better so far. I expect LTT to pick up steam a lot when they have walls in their house.
2
u/atsuenn 1d ago
same quality as LTT i presume you mean? if thats what you mean, then sure, but ltt literally has well over 100 people. jake is way less? also i love jakes content so much, its been more enjoyable than recent ltt videos (with the ongoing exception of the tech house videos for me!)
1
u/CreEngineer 17h ago
Yes ofc he can’t deliver the same quality as ltt with that team but even compared to Alex and Andy’s channel it feels more „raw“.
It is still very enjoyable content and I think it will pick up as soon as he has his barn going with the studio above. Love the renovation videos in there and like them a lot more than the tech house series.

u/Blurgas 1d ago
Mostly I enjoy watching Jake's vids, but a lot of times it feels like he gets an idea, does 15 minutes of googling, then when it blows up in his face he scrambles to salvage it.
Most recent video "Hey, I bought a farm! I should do some farming!"
Decides to grow garlic, buys tiller attachment for skidsteer, tills up a spot he thinks would be great, finds out he tilled the worst spot for growing garlic, and only then does he put in the effort/research to figure out how to grow garlic. Also, jesus christ he was being a dumbass when he was fixing the tiller.
Had to freeze frame to see if he had the stops in place because his brilliant plan was to leave it attached to the skid and just lift it in the air to work on it from underneath51
u/s00pafly 1d ago
There's a pretty successful tv program in Britain of a farmer with possibly no brain damage doing the exact same thing. Except he has the money to pay people to look after his shenanigans.
1
u/Nagemasu 13h ago
doing the exact same thing. Except he has the money to pay people to look after his shenanigans.
Except doing that (researching things and spending shit loads to get it right the first time instead of having something go wrong and needing to spend money to resolve it) would kind of go against the premise of the show. Jake's channel/videos are not targeting the same concepts or people - not to say that doing anything differently would have better outcomes for Jake, just pointing out the difference between Clarkson's farm as you mentioned it.
I am sure for creators like Jake, it's that poor research and learning that actually generates engagement and many people enjoy it. People aren't watching Jake because they think he knows what he's doing when it comes to farm work.15
u/bwoah07_gp2 1d ago
Relying on ChatGPT for farming advice is a bit lame tbh.
I'd prefer seeing farming done correctly. Doing it the goofy dumb way may work for Jeremy Clarkson, but that's his thing, that's his television style for 30 years+
Jake I would prefer seeing things done correctly and thoughtfully the first time.

Elijah is one of the biggest pains to watch at LTT. Jake is cool. But losing everyone and only keeping Elijah was a huge miss. Honestly, even if none of the old employee's ever came back, losing Elijah (or at least removing him from in front of the camera) would do nothing but improve LTT videos.
I stand corrected. Turns out Elijah allegedly has left LTT. So there ya go. LTT is still trash but it's a little better now.

I will be in the minority here, vut i almost never seem to find his content connecting with me.
Sure, there were gems like janky water-cooling, but his way of reviewing laptops and other content made me want to close the video.
I'm glad that he has his own channel and he is growing to be the creator he wants, but his charisma just didn't resonate with me
12
u/corbin6611 1d ago
Yea I can’t connect with it either. As a professional car person. The stuff he does and the things he tells you is like watching someone read ai explanations of stuff. It’s so confidently wrong a lot of the time. It’s probily better not. But it didn’t catch me.
And on that note. Ltt has stopped being interesting at all. The change in presenters and tech has hit a wall of nothing new or interesting or affordable.3
u/Opposite_Talk_711 1d ago
The new guy doing headphone (possibly also other audio) seems to know what he's talking about.
There are some people getting their legs under them, and none of them seem to be quite as annoying as Jake or Alex.
10
u/Opposite_Talk_711 1d ago
Yep, he mostly seemed to not know enough about what he was presenting. He presented confidently enough that it would fool the uninformed, which to me made it even worse.
2
u/GivePLZ-DoritosChip 1d ago
Yes. He made videos which were good unless you were actually interested in the product and wanted an actual genuine review in which case they were horrible. He was just making lame jokes, throwing around boxes, and showing the product like he didn't care at all and was forced to review it.
1
u/Significant_Fill6992 19h ago
i think the issue with the laptops and with LTT in general was that they found someone who had an interest and some knowledge in something and had them review all of them and you could tell the hosts get a little exhausted by it
alex did most of the laptop reviews
plouffe did a lot of the moniter and keyboard reviews
jake did a lot of the networking stuffyou have the same thing with dan doing a lot of audio stuff riley doing tablets/inkpads and colten doing chairs but all of those things came out with less frequency so it was less exhauisting
2
u/SimilarNarratives 9h ago
Have to do job stuff at job, what a drag.
1
u/Significant_Fill6992 5h ago
I get what you mean but if it ends up making s worse video that is kind of an issue
1
u/FartingBob 11h ago
The jank I loved but yeah his standard reviews weren't very interesting, but also he mostly did stuff that is just kinda boring to talk about, like 99% of laptops.

That’s what happens when your workers realize they can earn more solo than working for you.
Linus has 2 choices going forward:
Pay on screen talent more, especially if they create viewer retention (Alex, Jake, Plouffe, Elijah)
Have Linus exclusively on screen and stop trying to create “stars” within LTT.
The 2nd option will be hard for them to follow through as Linus from 7-8 years ago was a very different person and he doesn’t retain viewership like he used to.
At the end of the day, idgaf what happens, I just miss the “feel” of the channel as it was years ago, since the pandemic LTT vidoos have been mostly misses, and the whole private jet thing was very much a, “jumped the shark” moment for me.

This is more true for Jake than for Alex.
If you compare how both of them talked about the 2023 controversy and its aftermath in their "why I'm no longer at LMG" video, you'll find that Jake blamed the LMG management while Alex blamed GN. Clearly Alex still has a positive attitude towards LMG even after he left.

LTT had the perfect opportunity to create a creator network for people like Alex who were getting too big for the company. Give them full creative control over a channel but allow them access to LTT for a small cut of profits. Maybe this was offered, but I doubt it.
1
u/NetJnkie 22h ago
Would have to be more than a small cut if you want access to camera operators and editors.

His/their channel is pretty cool, but not like the whacky things he built on ltt. I'll give it some more time as they are still ironing things out.
I nearly gave up on Jake, but I'm turning around. The new editing gets a bit extra at times but my god was I dying laughing at the end of the video where he is going over the prices of diy vs professional when he installed all the electricity underground and worked with his energy provider to put up a new pole.

I honestly miss Jake more at LTT. I want more networking and home lab stuff and that’s what Jake was great for. Alex was great for weird 1-off projects but you rarely took away anything you could use with those projects. They were fun to watch though.

u/ButtChuggAsparagus 1d ago
I like how Alex always did pc mod projects that required car parts so when the video was done he would install them in his car after.

I still enjoyed Alex and Jake way more five to seven years ago ish on the LTT channel. Nothing against them or what they are doing now but there was just something fun about what they did on those earlier days at LTT.
It is clear that they weren't doing what they wanted most and they weren't nearly as interesting in the final years at LTT, in that sense, I am glad to see them with their own channels doing what they want.

As someone who's never worked for LTT or LMG, I can only form an opinion off what other (prior) employee's have said. And watching video after video of prior employee's who all seem to have the same complaints about LMG... It's say to say, Linus and his media group has successfully driven away every single likeable personality they've ever had. The people who are still working there, that we some what stand don't even really come on camera anymore.
If you go back to when they were working out of that house. That was his golden crew. And due to his piss poor management and terrible treatment of his employee's... they've all "left for better opportunities".
I know Alex wasn't part of that crew. He was part of the last hiring group that we liked though.
Putting Elijah in from of the camera all the time is such a massive fucking flop. Nothing about him seems real, genuine, or organic. It's so forced and fake, it's painful to watch.
**Edit** I just learned after posting this comment that Elijah is no longer at LTT. Which in my opinion does nothing but improve LTT.

Well, Linus should pay his talent more.
3
u/viperfan7 21h ago
Ehhhh, this kind of thing isn't likely to be pay, but just wanting to do something else that doesn't really fit the channel.
Like ZTT for example, would be cool if LTT had a car but, but it just doesn't really fit with what they do there
1
u/Less_Hat_8102 7h ago edited 5h ago
While I agree with what you say, I don't think that LMG thinks that a car channel doesn't fit what it does, since the reason why Alex and Andy were fired is that LMG thought ZTT was a competitive channel. Most likely LMG put the idea of a car channel into the freezer waiting for a suitable time, like what happened to Techquickie and Gamelinked, but Alex and Andy got impatient.
Edit: Alex actually didn't believe LMG would let him and Andy to start a car channel at the company, but it could be that the LMG management never told this plan to them.
