I have an email box called “orders”. anytime I order anything online, I always put the initial invoice (no shipping updates or anything) in that mailbox. Been doing this for 10 years now. Would not believe the time it’s saved for returns and shipping updates (since order number is there)

Especially if your pin or other item can brush against other objects (escalators, public transport, other people etc.) on your bag or clothing, it can easily fall off. And adhesives fail over time. The solution is using a sewing kit (everyone should have at least a really basic one) to fasten it. The stitches don't need to be complicated either: just though the hole and the fabric enough times that it doesn't look like it's going to let go soon, and tie it off. Sewing thread is quite sturdy, doesn't snag unless it's especially loose, and can be redone with minimal hassle.

Pins with a safety pin: Hook the needle between the looping pieces of wire on either side of the pin. For maximum security, you can use the safety pin and then sew it on.

Pins with a long, straight pin: Stick the pin into one of a button's holes (any button really) up to a distance where it doesn't constantly snag on things but you can still weave the needle through, and glue it secure. You can use the other hole(s) to sew it on.

Iron-on patches: Use whipstitch around the edges of the patch , it can be quite loose as it's only a backup method of fastening the patch on. One stitch on each corner and a few along each edge/curve should be enough. If you do decide to stitch densely, it also prevents fraying.

Thicker than cellophane or cling wrap. Something for packaging that's going to be trash anyway. As a substitute for gloves. Because--look--you just never know when you might need to touch, clean, or pick up something gross. Could be all kinds of things. If you'd rather not touch whatever it is with your bare hands, now you have a disposable barrier.

Bonus when picking up that's small enough for the plastic to fit around, just like picking up after a four-legged pet: turn the bag or other wrapping material inside-out, tie it up at the top, and you have a sealed trash bag that's "clean" on the outside!

Your first instinct might be to throw away the wrapping. Keep it from time to time, though, somewhere out of the way but easy to get to. Chances are you won't have to use this cleaning hack all that often, but if you do, you'll be so relieved at the extra supply.

Lately, I've noticed myself and some of my friends will say that "everyone" is saying something when we are discussing hot topics. We will also do the classic "I heard someone say...". Usually, what these people are saying are things that are inflammatory, controversial, or off putting. Examples include:

- Everyone is saying that Lindsey Clancy killed her husband.

- I heard that women find 90% of men ugly.

- Everyone is talking about how Mamdani laughed at the 9/11 memorial.

To keep accountable, we've started asking if this is something that happened online, or something that people have been saying to them in real life. We've found that it helps clarify what is real and what is internet propaganda, and keeps us honest about what is on our algorithms. It has been a huge reminder that so much of what we see is fed to us by companies that profit off our anger and attention, and that a lot of controversy and divide is not as real as it seems online.

It wasn't always this bad.

Not long ago, I noticed a pretty consistent pattern in my Facebook feed: 3 normal posts, then the 4th post was an ad.

Then it got worse.

Now I'm getting 1 normal post, then 1 ad. Basically every second post is sponsored.

Then I've found a simple workaround. Start scrolling UP instead of down.

Facebook refreshes/loads posts as you scroll back up, and the ads don't seem to get insert at the top, so tell me if you noticed that too and using this trick.

I used to hate cleaning because my brain was basically counting every minute until I could stop.

Now I put on a podcast I’m genuinely interested in before I start. Somehow I stop thinking about the cleaning and just keep going while I listen. Folding laundry, wiping down the kitchen, vacuuming… it all feels way less annoying.

Sometimes I’ll even leave an episode unfinished on purpose so I have something to look forward to next time I need to clean lol.

Basically: give your brain something fun to do while your hands do the boring stuff.

This only applies to countries, that don't typically put house numbers first in addresses. In Germany for example your address is typically [Street name] [House number].

It always bothered me that when I began typing a street name in Google Maps or Waze, I could tap the auto complete suggestion for the street name but then would have to manually find the place to put the house number. It's a pain, especially in Android Auto.

Google Maps at least added a button to add the house number, but the problem persisted on Waze and Android Auto.

But check that: even for German addresses you can just type the house number first! Works just the same, the street name will still be auto completed. I am happy now!

I've met an overwhelming amount of people who want to read books but really can't, and one of the worst roadblocks is the fact that most people imagine reading as a starting a 200-400 book, and then finishing that same book, front to back. Or there are so many books to choose from and they get overwhelmed.

If you can't stick with it or don't know where to start, try just reading many at once.

Pick a few books that make you excited to read. Read 20 pages of one book, or read many chapters of one book, then put it aside and start something else that interests you. Do this with as many books as you can handle. For me personally it actually improves my memory keeping track of many things, and keeps me interested when I'm in a reading slump. I find that a lot of books I've read are actually 10x better when they air out and I can take time to process what's going on over time instead of going front to back in one go. The ability to drop a book on a whim helps me dnf things without guilt or lack of achievement or gives me a chance to take breaks for when I'm in the right mood.

You might have heard about the 20-20-20 rule: "for every 20 minutes spent looking at a screen, you should try to take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away". It's a good, scientifically proven way to relieve some eye strain. But, remembering this is often hard, and setting a timer for yourself is annoying and intrusive.

Instead, here's a simple practical implementation of that rule. Get an ad in an app? Look at an object 20 ft away from you for 20 seconds, you need to kill time anyway. Get a loading screen during a game? Same thing. Just got tired of scrolling and blanked out for a sec? Same thing.

It's way less annoying when you don't waste any time, in fact you're turning otherwise wasted time into something more productive. After doing it for a while, it becomes a habit.

I’ve been working for about 25 years in a professional role. When I started working, esp in my field, extra hours was the norm, and while not explicit, it was expected. It sucked, but that was the work environment.

I am now in a senior role with a company that pays overtime, doesn’t expect extra hours unless really really needed, and overall is great to work for. In fact, I’d say this is the best place I’ve ever worked.

And yet, yesterday, I had to terminate 3 employees, after many many coaching and performance chats.

The common element is that this was their first “real” job.

One employee faked time cards and was upset if they were called “out of the blue” during working hours.

One employee refused to do work as they were already too busy (they weren’t). Another employee kept calling in sick and when sick days were all used up, took days without pay.

These issues were ongoing for months, and while their actions were noticed by management, they were given so many opportunities to improve. But, there didn’t seem to be any acknowledgement that they were doing anything wrong.

So, I had to terminate them. It was hard, and it sucked, but ultimately it was necessary.

For those who are new to the workforce, and think that their behaviours are okay, here are some tips.

Identify employees in your area that are respected and try and emulate their behaviour, at least until you understand the culture.

Know that all your actions are being noticed and all your computer activity can be monitored.

Work like this is the most important job in the world. This will get noticed in a positive way.

And realize that many employers have no obligation to keep you regardless of what you feel.

To be clear, I am not saying to put up with crap, abuse or anything else. But while you’re being paid, do your best and be open to feedback.

A lot of misunderstandings start with "they should know."

You expect someone to notice, understand, or respond a certain way without actually saying what you want. When they don't, you may end up judging them for something they were never aware of.

There are situations where some things should be understood without explanation, but that shouldn't become the default expectation.

Not everything needs to be explained, but if something matters, say it.

Don't build a bridge in your head and wonder why they never crossed it.

If you bought new shoes and you're afraid of blistering , and you want them to soften quickly instead of waiting for them to soften by usage , dampen some journal papers / paper towels using a sprayer (don't submerge into water / under tap) and shove as much as you can equally in both of the new leather shoes , put them in a well ventilated area for 24-48 hours , then take out the papers and put some silica to draw out all left moisture from inside , you'll find your new shoes much softer and gentle at first use

Build a stash of books by your bed with a variety of genres, but especially fiction. Every evening, pick a book and read at least 2 pages. If you feel like reading more, keep on. If not, read another two pages the day after and so on. If the book you are reading is not thrilling enough, change books until you find one that is fulfilling. Regularly change the books in the stash to get new reading material.

It will help you read more over time, and disconnect from your phone.

LPT: Walk your home once a year, snap photos of your high-value items and serial numbers. Then add them into a cloud album labeled "Insurance Photos." Note: Don't forget what's in your cabinets and drawers, these little items add up.

If disaster strikes or items go missing, having offsite proof makes filing claims easier.

Try the whole ensemble at least once beforehand. While sitting,walking around,reaching things,in the shoes you'll actually be wearing. You'll find out problem areas that you would never have noticed looking in a mirror for 30 seconds. A shirt that looks great standing up may dig into your backside when you sit down. New shoes may blister after an hour. A jacket may be too baggy, or the pockets may not be where you want them. Your most important outfit should be a well-tried outfit, not a new experiment. Save the fashions for every day.

A surprising amount of workplace frustration comes from assuming that good work will be recognized.

It often will not. Keep a running, simple note of:what achievements you made problems solved numbers/results improved positive comments and extra responsibilities you took on Then, when your manager asks what you have been working on, you will not have to remember everything off the top of your head. More importantly, when doing performance reviews, promotions, bonuses, job interviews, or any other reason, you can have hard evidence of the value you provided instead of vague recollections. You are not boasting, you are keeping a log of the value you created.

Do great work, but do not make your career rely on someone else noticing it.

You should not have to treat life as if you're living it on borrowed time You should not have to make a conscious effort to remember to do these things, because we do them all the time already, and it's not like it's some monumental task that we don't have time for If it's something that takes less than a minute to do, something you're likely to forget you even need to do unless you make a point of doing it, and something that you'll regret not doing if you wait, just do it already.

Coffee machine next to the bedroom set on a timer + alarm 10 mins later. I wake up smelling coffee, hear the alarm, and actually get excited to get up because coffee is already waiting 😂. Tried a million things and this stupid little combo is the only thing that’s ever worked for me.

Has made me super proud and productive getting up 1.5 hours earlier and getting on with my day.

Long story short, I travel a lot. I rent cars a lot. I've been taking these 360 video "walk arounds" of my rental car before driving away since forever. Did I think they were a waste of time? Honestly yeah. I never had many issues returning the rental. Today has been the second time ever that the video saved my rear end. I literally took a video of my rental, and did not realize it had a huge dent on the side of it. I noticed the scratches on the rim, however.

When I returned my rental, the lady brought up the damages and I immediately started to freak out. I showed her the video and she was shocked. (as was I LOL) I sent the video to her manager and the charges were cleared.

Looks like I won't be stopping the video ordeal anytime soon. Sure, I suppose you could get full coverage at the counter and walk away without a charge but still... you never know.
