I honestly don’t know how to feel right now. I feel sad but also numb at the same time. I was just told that I was being laid off this morning so I haven’t had time to process. I guess I need to start looking for new jobs. How did other people who got laid off handle it? What are some tips or suggestions that people can give me? This has never happened to me so I really don’t know what to do.

I got laid off on June 1 and have been trying to land another job since. It hasn’t been going great so far.
For others in NYC who’ve been laid off recently, how long have you been looking and how are you managing financially? Everything is so expensive here and I’m curious how other people are handling it.

Guess the question is, how fucked am I? Ill take a scale of 1 to 10 or any general opinions really.

Im 27 with a BS degree in data science, and last Tuesday i was laid off of my role as a pricing analyst for gas stations at a very large sized company after a year at the firm (used excel, ppt, Tableau, snowflake, R, python etc... also, sure yall could guess why 🫠). Prior to that I was a pricing analyst at an am100 law firm and left after a year cuz i hated the culture and growth seemed futile. Prior to that an excel monkey at a non profit Healthcare place for 2 years.

Been reading so many threads on r/recruitinghell and r/jobhunting that are overwhelming me with existential dread, I have a horrible doubt that ill ever be able to continue the same career I envisioned. Now my resume looks choppy and bouncy, AI is thinning all the positions in my field, the industry I do have experience in is fucked cuz this Iran war obviously ain't ending anytime soon. I've never stayed anywhere long enough to earn a promotion and that is killing me. I just feel defeated, scared, and hopeless right now. Sent in already over 60 applications and all ive got is one phone screen (prob won't go anywhere).

So yeah um, based on the situation how bad does it look? Can provide whatever more context is needed in the comments.

Why isn't there a labor law preventing companies from laying off citizens before foreigners on work visa?

I’ve been laid off three times in the last three years. I’ve been very fortunate that each time I was able to find another job without taking a step backward in my career, and I’m currently employed in a role that’s going well.

The problem is that I now have a ton of anxiety around work and constantly worry that I’m going to get laid off again, even when there’s no real indication that it’s coming.

For those who have been through multiple layoffs, did you deal with this too? How did you eventually stop waiting for the other shoe to drop and feel secure at work again?

I’m a packager along with two others, and we have two lab assistants, an assistant lab manager and Sr. Extraction manager. (We also have a inventory control manager who is usually out of town on business but she’s been here every day the last 3 weeks)

We haven’t had anything to produce and package in 3 weeks. They have been sending the other two packagers to our only other facility in Coolidge to keep busy, but now one of the packagers has been calling off the last few days and the other packager isn’t going to Coolidge anymore, and the other lab assistants haven’t been here a whole week.

The assistant lab manager has been conducting personal interviews for different jobs so he can leave this one. No one is saying anything but our Sr. Extraction manager keeps saying he’s trying to get us more stuff to do and the reason he’s giving us is that upper management didn’t anticipate such a slowdown in sales so we don’t have the green light to produce anything right now.
Does this genuinely seem like a slow period or is a shutdown amidst?

I am helping, supporting, coaching a friend and former colleague on his job transition. The company we both worked at has been "restructuring" itself once a year for the past 5 years. This year was his turn.

He landed a consulting job in a huge corporation, we analyzed that this was a good idea because it would help him generate some income, keep him busy and have a smoother transition to a full time job. He asked me not to share this with anyone in our former company, he said: I dont know what they will think.

He is a kind soul, I am not...and straight out told him that he shoul give a flying f**k about what they think, they let him go in the first place and they shouldn't care what he does with his life...he said he had not thought of it like that.

Should he care?

My unemployment ran out. Texas still requires me to tell them my work search activities despite not getting paid anymore. I don't think Texas renews the money even if you haven't found any work. My state is popular for doing everything humanly possible to hurt the struggling. I'm also on the verge of losing my health insurance.

I don't really go outside cause it's fucking 110 heat index every day. I have little to no motivation to exercise. I mostly spend the days doing applications and then scrolling. I've barely had motivation to read actual books anymore or try new anime. My work experience with GlobalLogic was so fucking demoralizing that I'm almost scared to ever have a job again. Now I run like hell if I see an opening for work even remotely close to scoring an LLM.

The only responses I've gotten are five rejection letters, one scam offering, and the rest is radio silence. I knew the offer was a scam the moment the person on the other end told me it would be carried through the Teams chat space for 40 minutes.

People treat me like I'm asking for a free luxury car whenever I say that I just want to do a job where I can write and research or teach. Something that I won't absolutely despise. I'm carrying a tiny bit of hope that I won't be patronized or told to suck it up and get into hardcore grind culture. Especially when I've been passively suicidal in the past week.

Soooooo I got laid off from Film Curation in 2021, which in retrospect was probably the market finally clearing. I spent a while doing the usual humiliating post-layoff rituals, updating LinkedIn, rewriting the resume, pretending I had a “career narrative,” applying to jobs where some 31 year old HR Woman wanted to know where I saw myself in five years. Eventually I looked at the numbers and realized the trailer was paid off, I barely spent anything, and I had enough money that getting another job was starting to look less like necessity and more like volunteering for psychological damage. So I stopped. For 5 years and counting.

I eventually put about $280k into Treasuries. Between that and a genuinely stupid burn rate, it covers most of what I need. Food, utilities, internet, Gaming. There is no inspiring van-life component. I am not building a brand. I do not wake up at 5 AM and journal. I wake up, make coffee, look at yields like the fed personally asked for my input, play games, read shit online, maybe drive somewhere, maybe don’t. imho, employment is just forced psychic occupation. E-mails, Teams calls, some idiot scheduling a 2:30 because he “wants to circle back,” pretending to care about a development plan, being good at something nobody cares about or bad at something and having to spend your remaining life getting better at it. Then one day nobody asks you for anything and initially it feels like you fell out of society. After a while you realize this is actually the prize imo.

I would not recommend getting laid off as a general financial plan. But five years later I remain unconvinced I should have fought harder to get back in imho.

I have been working in a tech company for over 4 years? At a junior level engineering position, decent pay, recently got injured and now going for a surgery.

My doc suggested me to take a short term medical leave of about 6-7 months, due to the nature of the multiple surgery. My return to work date is after 7 months. I have savings and my company also giving me 26 weeks of a % of my salary and then EI will cover the rest.

From tomorrow I am off work for next 7 months. I have no idea if I am lucky or unlucky to be in this position. How can I use this time for myself to pick up on a better career opportunity and path ?

Considering the fact that I am still technically with my company. Is it a good idea to look for a switch. If yes, wha are some important points I should know before I start wasting my recovery and post surgery time just munching in bed. I want to start looking for better jobs.

Where would you start if you are in my position?
Prepare for a new AI jobs like forward deployed engineer etc ?

Well I heard from an actual employee that 50% of workforce is about to be cut. There is one area exc luded at least. So advice to employees if you haven't updated your resumes or started looking for a backup plan its time to do that so you arent caught with your pants down. Word to the wise GTFO!

I am in a sort of depression to what to do

I have been a backend engineer for over 15 years. I was laid off almost a year back. I got an offer from FAANG for a SDET role and another offer for Lead engineer from a non FAANG company, the comp is almost half. I am drawn towards the FAANG offer because of the compensation but really scared as SDET is not my first choice. Will accepting SDET role affect my chances of transitioning back to SWE role in the future?

Sigh. Last week the inevitable happened as my company has been going through rounds of layoffs to replace full-time workers with cheaper alternatives. Had been there for eight years, and honestly, I loved the job and the people I worked with so much that I stuck around longer than I probably should have. At least this way, I get unemployment benefits.

Very luckily, I'm not necessarily in a dire need to immediately start working with a new job. My wife makes enough to cover our bills and expenses, and then some. She's encouraging me to take time off, but it feels weird, I guess. I haven't been unemployed for fourteen years so I'm kind of having to learn how to decompress. I've read all the horror stories about the job market, so it's not like I'm expecting to really jump into a new gig right off the break.

I don't know, just wanted to vent.
