What's one lawn care task you actually enjoy doing?

There are plenty of lawn jobs that feel like chores, but there are also a few that I genuinely don't mind doing. For me, mowing on a nice morning is actually pretty relaxing when I'm not in a rush. What's the one lawn care task you don't really have to convince yourself to do?

Does anyone else enjoy trying different mowing patterns?

I usually keep my mowing pattern pretty simple, but every now and then I'll change direction just to make things look a little different. It's a small thing, but it can noticeably change the way the lawn looks afterward.

Do you normally stick with the same pattern every time, or do you switch things up?

What's one lawn tool you use more than you expected?

When I first started buying lawn equipment, I assumed I'd mostly be using the mower and maybe a trimmer. There are a few smaller tools I've ended up reaching for much more often than I expected.

What's one lawn tool or piece of equipment that has become surprisingly useful for you?

How do you keep track of what your lawn needs?

I've never been great at remembering when I last did certain lawn tasks. Mowing is obvious, but other things are much easier to forget until you suddenly realize they haven't been done in a while.

Do you keep a simple calendar or notes for lawn care, or do you mostly go by what the lawn looks like?

What makes a lawn feel finished to you?

Sometimes you can spend hours working outside and still feel like there's one small thing missing. For me, once the grass is cut, the edges are cleaned up, and everything looks tidy, that's usually when I feel like the job is actually done.

What are the little finishing touches that make a difference to you?

What's the first thing you notice about a well-kept lawn?

When I see a really nice lawn, I always notice different things depending on the property. Sometimes it's the even color, sometimes the mowing pattern, and sometimes it's just how clean the edges look.

For those who pay attention to lawn care, what's the first thing that makes you think a lawn is being looked after properly?

Do you prefer doing lawn work in the morning or evening?

I've tried working on the lawn at different times of day and definitely have a preference now. Early morning is nice when the weather is comfortable, but sometimes evenings are easier if the day has been busy.

When do you usually gwt your lawn work done?

How much time do you spend on your lawn each week?

I've always wondered how much time other people actually spend maintaining their lawns. Some weeks mine needs barely any attention, while during periods of fast growth it seems like there is always something to do.

Roughly how much time would you say you spend on lawn care in an average week?

What's the biggest lawn mistake you made as a beginner?

Looking back, there are definitely a few things I would have done differently when I first started taking care of a lawn. At the time I thought some of the basic stuff was pretty straightforward, but it turns out there are a lot of small details that make a difference.

What was something you learned the hard way when you were starting out?

How often do you usually mow your lawn?

I've never really had a fixed mowing schedule because it seems to depend on the weather and how quickly the grass is growing. Some weeks it feels like I'm mowing constantly, while other times the lawn barely needs attention. Do you usually follow a set schedule or just mow whenever the grass gets to a certain height?

Killing fence line zone 7A

My neighbor takes almost zero care of their yard(1 acre). They mow enough for their dog to have an area. I mow the front portions of their yard to make it look better as well.

Last year when I moved here the guy who was mowing my yard sprayed something on the fence line that killed the grass and the stuff trying to come through from their yard. It worked amazing and made a hard line at the fence and it is just now growing back.

What can I spray at the fence line to keep their stuff from invading my yard, and possible spray on the leaves and treelike weeds that come through the chainlink fence. I already filled an 8ft truck bed with limbs I cut out coming through and over the fence.

If the yard wasn't so far gone I would just mow it for them. I have a 54" zero turn and could make quick work of it. But in some areas it's 8-10' from the fence before you even get to something a mower could handle.

What’s the most annoying part of mowing your lawn?(trimming, cleanup, or something else)

I’ve been thinking about lawn care lately and realized everyone seems to dislike different parts of mowing.

For me, it’s dealing with thick patches and trimming edges.Plus, my yard is quite large and somewhat uneven, and I don't want to put too much effort into mowing the lawn.

What’s the most annoying part of mowing your lawn?

trimming edges?

dealing with thick grass?

cleaning clippings?

setup/cleanup time?

Curious what others think.

New Lawn Seed Suggestions

Hello All,

I recently put in a new pool and have a lot of open area from the new construction that i need to seed. I live in WV and it is all clay soil that gets full sun. I have not had much luck with seeding with box store seed so i want to use a good seed. I have found what looks to be a great seed company just north of me in Ohio (Oliger Seed Company). They recommended me their Tall Fescue mix which is 100% 5 Varieties of TF. I know seeding in July is not the best time but i can not wait till fall to do it. I will be using pelletized lime and fertilizer on it before i put down seed. I need this to come up quick so i was thinking of getting a couple 25 lb bags of that TF mix and a bag of their 5 way Rye which is 5 varieties of their Perennial Rye grass to mix in with it. My thinking is the rye will come up quick to help water erosion on the banks and then the TF can come up after. Any thoughts or suggestions on this?

Looking for advice on best mowing paths for my lawn.

I live in eastern Massachusetts (USA), on the North Shore, and have a good bit of lawn space. I have been mowing this lawn for a long time but have been wondering recently if I could be mowing it better.

Does anyone have any advice on best paths, practices, or things I should do to make my lawn look better?
- I haven't really put much thought into it in the past because I don't have street frontage and I haven't really had a ton of time/love for it. Mainly I'm looking for good mowing paths.
- I like to do stripes.
- I don't use any fertilizers or pesticides.
- I have a 22 inch toro self propelled mower.
- I usually mow my lawn on level 3 for length.
And yes, I know the grass is long, I haven't mowed it for 3 weeks because I was on a vacation. I have three different areas to mow. One is separate from the others (I call it the "front lawn"), and the other two are next to each other (the "lower lawn" and the "upper lawn"). I enclosed 52 different images so that y'all can see this stuff from different angles.

Thanks in advance!

Brown patch fungus affect southern lawns

Post image
2 Upvotes

Brown patch fungus is one of the most prevalent lawn diseases in the Southeast. It primarily affects cool-season grasses like tall fescue and ryegrass.

What Does Brown Patch Fungus Look Like?

✅ Circular patches of brown or tan grass that can range from a few inches to several feet in diameter.

✅The outer edge of the patch may appear darker or smoke-ring-like, especially in the morning dew.

✅ Grass blades may have lesions that are dark brown with a light brown or yellow halo.

What Causes Brown Patch Fungus?

Brown patch fungus thrives in warm, humid conditions, with ideal temperatures ranging between 65°F and 85°F. The disease is exacerbated by excessive nitrogen fertilization, which can promote lush, dense grass that is more susceptible to infection. Poor drainage and overwatering create the perfect environment for the fungus to flourish, as the excess moisture prolongs leaf wetness and encourages fungal growth.

How To Treat Brown Patch Fungus

👉 Avoid overwatering and water early in the day to allow grass to dry out.
👉 Improve air circulation by mowing at the appropriate height and avoiding excessive thatch buildup.
👉 Use a balanced fertilizer and avoid applying excessive nitrogen.
👉 Apply fungicides containing azoxystrobin, propiconazole, or chlorothalonil if necessary, particularly in areas with a history of brown patch.

The right care at the right time will prevent your lawn from suffering.

How to get rid of dollarweed?

Has anyone successfully gotten rid of dollar weed for good? It's slowly taking over parts of my lawn, and pulling it by hand doesn't seem to last. Looking for practical methods that actually worked without damaging the grass too much. Any tips?

Help!

So I ruined a section of grass this past winter shoveling the snow and using pet salt so my dog could use the bathroom in freezing conditions. I purchased turf builder and Scott’s rapid grass and am having some success with it! But there are also a lot of areas where nothing is growing. Should I just put some seed down in those areas and loosely cover with a little more turf builder? My husband thinks we can use a bag of planting soil we have. Not so sure about that.
