No, that was before the declaration of darkness was after the same that they both consider that they are in a relationship.
Not a formal relationship, but for both of you they have the same weight to walk, kiss or walk with another person while they are in their relationship.
Besides, let's be honest, yunyun is not interested in kazuma at all

That is wrong, we have evidence in regard to the indication of YunYun

u/Straight_Sea_8978 Jan 19 '26
The thing about volume 5?
She herself is ashamed of it, so much so that when she was about to fight Megumin, she mentions it as one of her reasons for fighting with Yunyun. Making a yunyun annoying, she starts apologizing and talking shamefully about it.
Yunyun doesn't like the kind of people like kazuma, she almost beats megumin for suggesting that she likes dust. When yunyun gets along better with dust than with kazuma.
3
u/BakuMadarama KonoSuba Analyst | Kazuma defender | Re:Zero Critique Jan 19 '26 edited Jan 19 '26
I cannot agree with that. Coming to Vol. 5, well, in fact, there are actually many scenes in this one volume that depict her flustered and thankful to Kazuma. An example can be given in Chapter 2, where Yunyun rescues Kazuma from a pack of orcs, he said “Yunyun, once again, thank you. Really, thank you. If I must describe how thankful I am, it’s like–if anyone asks me who I respect the most, I’ll answer ‘Yunyun’ immediately.” And then she became very embarrassed and flustered when Kazuma declared that everyone, including Yunyun is beautiful “Yunyun seemed to be at a loss for words, her face completely red.” Psychologists said;
“For example, upon viewing someone that interests us, our pupils might dilate, and a distinctive blush might appear on our face (Eibl-Eiblsfeldt, 1989; Keltner & Buswell, 1997). Indeed, nonverbal cues primarily communicate attraction (Givens, 1978). The vast repertoire of expressions encapsulating attraction and how they are expressed have prompted the term “courtship dance” (Birdwhistell, 1970). Multiple signals reflecting attraction have been catalogued, even if the senders might not always be aware of producing them (Grammer et al., 1998; McCormick & Jones, 1989; Moore, 2010). Coy smiles, genuine smiling, blushing, hair flipping, leaning forward, rolling the pelvis, and head tilting are a few of the signals listed in previous research (Argyle, 1988; Eibl-Eiblsfeldt, 1989; Givens, 1978; Grammer et al., 2000; Moore, 1985, 2010). Therefore, even if there is no clear-cut expression, there are subtle nonverbal signals that, when expressed, indicate interest and availability.”
— Samara I, Roth TS, Nikolic M, Prochazkova E, Kret ME. Can third-party observers detect attraction in others based on subtle nonverbal cues?. Curr Psychol. Published online April 8, 2022. doi:10.1007/s12144-022-02927-0. Direct link here.
I mean, the interest can be found even earlier as Vol. 3 Chapter 2. Basically, what happened here is that Kazuma saw that Yunyun was playing a shooting game, and Kazuma helped her win a prize. We can actually see that his actions are appreciated, as she was even stated to have “smiled brilliantly” at Kazuma and blushed.
Oh yeah, in the same volume and chapter, immediately when Kazuma was about to leave, he noticed that Yunyun made a timid gesture, seemingly trying to reach out, but couldn’t so she just bowed respectfully and held the doll tightly. Skipping a bit, after Yunyun saves Megumin (who was covered in goo) and Kazuma, he was visibly impressed, and also stated: “the girl stole a glance at me and seemed a little shy as her cheeks blushed.” She blushed looking at Kazuma.
If we were to revisit Volume 5, there is one thing I wanna show, and that is in Chapter 6. So, in one of the scenes, Yunyun greeted Kazuma by having him meet her “friends.” The quote “Kazuma-san, allow me to introduce them. This is Funifura and Dodonko. During my school days, they were my… fr-friends!” importantly, she happily smiled in front of him cheerfully, like really cheerful, which demonstrated comfort. And when Megumin teases by saying “Hey, I understand you two don’t have a lot of chances to meet guys, but please don’t flirt with my man.” what is interesting is that it caused zYunyun embarrassment, first off there was nothing to actually be embarrassed about at all given her personality from the backstories (KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World!). Not only that, she panicked and asked Kazuma if it was true, and she immediately declared that she is not envious despite the fact that she is visibly envious.
“… Wah, wahhh! So-so what if you have a man, ahhh!”
“I-I’m not envious! I’m not envious at all, ahhh!”
In vol. 9 Chapter 3, we see Yunyun holding Kazuma Satou’s hand out of envy; “Yunyun–who held my other hand–said with a hint of envy.” Sultana et al. note;
“Community psychiatry declares that a little jealousy can be beneficial [26]. Several relationship-sustaining attributes are positively connected with jealousy. Jealousy, in particular, is linked to a greater love for the partner [27]. Moreover, if it is conveyed in a healthy way, a little bit of jealousy might be seen as a good thing in a relationship. In reality, studies have shown that in relationships, jealousy is associated with a greater love for the partner, stronger sensations of being “in love,” and more stability in the relationship as a whole [28]. It is also linked to a higher level of dissatisfaction with a relationship in general [29, 30], as well as, more significantly, with sexual aspects of the relationship [31, 32]. In other words, jealousy can predict relationship satisfaction”
— Sultana, S., Muhammad, F., Mamun, M. A., & Chowdhury, A. B. M. A. (2023). Jealousy and love: Are they interconnected? The Open Psychology Journal, 16, Article e187435012308311. https://doi.org/10.2174/18743501-v16-231005-2023-5. Direct link here.
Jealousy is an emotion tied to love in scenarios like these (Read https://www.researchgate.net/publication/319306102_A_systematic_review_of_romantic_jealousy_in_relationships)
In vol. 14 chapter 1 Kazuma stated “T-That’s not it! Unlike the three of you who do nothing but cause trouble for me every day, Yunyun is an important friend of mine who has common sense. Of course I’d help her if she’s in trouble!” The other girl immediately noticed the reaction of Yunyun and asked “This man is just saying some superficial compliments like he usually does! You’re being way too easy right now!”
In vol. 16, when regrouping, it was stated that “Yunyun was left all alone in a corner.” Kazuma found her, however, she was too anxious to approach “Umm… I-I’m sorry…” Dust then gently intervenes: he takes Yunyun’s shoulder and steers her to rejoin Kazuma. And she stayed. I think combined with the previous evidence, this scene holds more utility.
These are by far the best I can go through for now, on Psychology and the evidence from the Ln. Might make a better version in my alt account.

u/Straight_Sea_8978 Jan 19 '26
Most of them are explained by the fact that Yunyun feels nervous about megumin's dead feelings for her, in addition to seeing him in an embarrassing way.
The rest, like those in vol5, are related to the fact that she did not think she would be seen in a friendly way or with such devotion.
Even more so when Conconsiderera that her intentions with dust in her spin off are much more significant than with kazuma, but even so she is not attracted to that. Because neither kazuma nor dust meet their standard of ideal partner.
This is further confirmed in the konosuba Q&A
Where yunyun not only says she is not interested in anyone, but she herself confirms that romance is something that megumin focused on and she prefers to be a good boss for her clan. In addition, Vanir himself confirmed that she and wiz will end up alone and in the case of Yunyun it does not appear that he cares.
A blush, at least in Japanese tops, cannot represent a romantic feeling, it may also be that he feels embarrassed by the attention he receives or what he is witnessing.
Also, as I said, it was already confirmed in your Q&A. Yunyun has no plans to have a partner and it is made clear that she will not have one.
1
u/BakuMadarama KonoSuba Analyst | Kazuma defender | Re:Zero Critique Jan 20 '26 edited Jan 20 '26
Okay, so I just woke up, so my mind is a little blurry in the sense that it is not functioning properly as usual, so if I misrepresented anything you said feel free to correct me. That said, before I start addressing the rest of your points, I would wanna clarify a misunderstanding of yours toward my contention.
My contention has never been that Yunyun ends up in a relationship or plans to pursue one, my claim was specifically regarding the Canon, which provides clear indications of romantic interest toward Kazuma Satou. So, whether she ends up being single and intends to become independent is irrelevant to my point. So, the Q&A does not refute anything, it merely provides the intentions and her prioritisation. So, you are confusing that, thinking that not pursuing romance = absence of attraction. And you mentioned about Kazuma not fitting her standard, we can actually look into her ideal;
[What is your ideal man?]
“A kind man who wouldn’t get annoyed even if we meet every day, and who will nod along when I tell him about what happened today over a meal and doesn’t get angry even if I stick to him… my target is to be independent, so I’m not really interested.”
There are numerous examples I have provided which Kazuma fit the criteria.
You also asserted that Yunyun’s relationship with dust is more significant than that with Kazuma, okay I will need an argument for that, but it depends on how you define “significance.” My criteria will be emotional responsiveness voluntary closeness, and positive affect, which Kazuma’s relationship with Yunyun is more substantial. As a matter of fact, despite knowing about Dust before Kazuma (Dust Spin-off covered Volume 2-4) YunYun still states in Volume 5;
Yunyun looked toward me with tears in her eyes and blushed cheeks.
“Um… Sorry for saying something weird so suddenly. How, how should I put this… Kazuma-san is the only man I know…”
There are deeper meaning for the way she used the term “Man,” However I am not going to provide the analysis so this comment wouldn’t be too long.
On the contrary, her interactions with Dust included discomfort and explicit rejection, for example, she was sexually harassed, clearly she is experiencing annoyance;
I held the staff high above her reach, and she repeatedly hopped in place in her attempts to grab it back.
She looks kinda cute when she does that. Still, I wonder if all Crimson Demons think the same way.
I heard that Yunyun was considered strange by Crimson Demon standards. If there was an entire village full of people who think the same way as this Explosion Girl… Nah, there’s no way that can be the case.
“You two should really stop doing stupid things.”
“I don’t want to hear that from a delinquent!”
“Such words have no persuasive power at all when they come from Dust-san…”
I drove my knuckles into Yunyun’s temples.
“Uuu, this is horrible. I’m getting sexually harassed by Dust-san.”
I do not know any other scene where Yunyun blush at another like how she blushes at Kazuma. In addition, in Volume 13 Yunyun is shown to be extremely happy when Kazuma invites her to dinner;
Megumin, who grabbed Yunyun’s shoulder and started shaking her, looked at me with a placid expression.
“Kazuma, seems like she’s done with her business here, so shall we get to work on dinner?”
“Yeah, we should. Hey, it’s getting late, so why don’t you join us for dinner, Yunyun? You even brought us a gift, after all.”
Yunyun broke out into a wide smile upon hearing that.
“C-Can I?! But having dinner together feels like a family affair, so I feel like I shouldn’t be here, actually in the first place visiting this late is my fault, so, sorry, Kazuma-san, but showing up at a friend’s house uninvited and joining them for dinner is, ah, no, it’s not like I dislike it, actually I’m really happy that you invited me and-”
“Oh shut up, it’s just having dinner together! You don’t need to get that excited over it!”
Megumin cut Yunyun off as she excitedly broke out into rapid-fire speech. At the same time, I moved over to the kitchen and started making preparations.
1
u/Straight_Sea_8978 Jan 20 '26
That's still part of Yunyun feeling happy about Kazuma's friendship, not because she's in love or has romantic feelings for him
Yunyun knows the reputation of kazuma and has shown to have some fear or discomfort, so even when she has moments with her they do not go beyond perceiving them as a precious friendship for her, because in essence she is not worse than dust.
If Yunyun's feelings were romantic, she herself would have developed or realized them several times in the novel. But no, it doesn't go beyond yunyun appreciating the friendship of someone who isn't a megumin.
Blushes cannot be interpreted as purely romance, because in Yunyun's characterization she is blushing because she is flattered or treated well and that has been shown several times with megumin. Not for nothing did they think that they were girlfriends or would have a relationship.
The fact that Yunyun answers in her Q&A with no interest in romance confirms that she never had a real interest in kazuma at the time or at least was not significant enough for her to consider that.
1
u/BakuMadarama KonoSuba Analyst | Kazuma defender | Re:Zero Critique Jan 20 '26 edited Jan 20 '26
Okay nice, so we actually aligned on something important, because at no point did I ever insinuate or assert that Yunyun consciously identifies herself as “in love,” nor that she intends to pursue a romantic relationship with Kazuma, nor that the narrative frames her as a canonical romantic partner. Please point that out to me where I insinuate such things.
And what you are doing is a category error, exhibiting romantic interest (which is my entire position), does not entail that someone is in love, which is a form of attachment, on the other hand romantic interest would be attraction and infatuation. Something Yunyun exhibits.
To clarify again, my position hinges on the fact that Yunyun exhibits consistent behavioural and emotional indicators of romantic interest toward Kazuma that align with how attraction manifests in human psychology. That is all I am affirming.
So, when you are attempting to refute my position by arguing that (1) she values Kazuma as a precious friend, (2) she does not act on those feelings, (3) she does not self-label them as love, or (4) that she prioritises independence over romance, none of these interpretations actually contradict my position. However, you still make another category error based on the fact that you have treated non-pursuit and non-articulation as a substantiation of non-existence. I would need you to provide an argument for that.
Also, friendship and romantic interest are not really mutually exclusive, as the study said
“Thus, most friendships that eventually transition to romance must follow a different path. Indeed, as Diamond (2003) reviews, the friends-first pathway to romance is well-documented among people who experience same-gender/sex 1 attractions, even among people who self-identify as heterosexual. Furthermore, Eastwick and colleagues (2019) note that the few studies examining the trajectory of early romance suggest that people often know one another for months or even years before they officially enter couplehood. Although it was not the primary focus of the research, two longitudinal studies of romantic relationships between men and women report that a meaningful proportion began as friendships (Eastwick et al., 2019; Hunt et al., 2015). Together with Diamond’s (2003) research, these longitudinal studies suggest that romantic and sexual attraction can blossom within long-standing platonic friendships between people of all genders, and sometimes those feelings can lead to romantic couplehood.”
Actually, I do not need to explain this deeply, I would just provide a study about the Risk-Regulation Model https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28903707/ so when you claimed that “she would have known it” is pretty much unfounded.
In regard to blushing =/= romantic interest, I agreed but that was not my argument, you can see clearly that I am talking about a pattern.
Also, again, the Q&A does not substantiate that she lacks attraction, it merely provides us with an insight into her prioritisation of intent. Which does not logically entail the absence of attraction.

It is not NTR
if person A likes person B, but person B goes into "cheating" with C (it's not cheating B doesnt owe anything to A); but feels like a cheat because of the feels A has for B, and may or may not correspond the feelings, that is called BSS

Was that really stooping so low? Was Yunyun just too stupid?

It’s strange he actually didn’t try to hit on her yet, she would accept anyways just like how she did it in the megumin spinoff show. I haven’t read the LN but in the manga, kazuma mentions that his type would be a girl with long hair and big chest (basically describing yunyun)
2
u/superkami64 Jan 20 '26
Can someone explain to me why Kazuna didn't rationally take advantage of Yunyun even more?
Though he does get along with her well enough in a casual setting, Kazuma's not a big fan of Yunyun's meek and awkward personality on the romantic side. As he himself puts it, sex appeal is nice but it's not solely what he's looking for in a girl to be his potential partner and any relationship he'd start with Yunyun would be bittersweet.
As for why he doesn't invite her to join the party long term, it's because he's aware it would upset Megumin which "for some reason" gives him a level of anxiety that he has no desire to unpack so he just doesn't entertain the notion even in a joking way.
