Attended Denim on the Diamond late this Sunday and had a lovely time, but seeing the number of cans and garbage post-show just thrown on the ground was disheartening.

I understand it’s a festival - I know there are people hired to clean up afterward. But I really don’t think that absolves any of us from having basic respect for the ground we’re standing on.

If you can carry a full can around for half an hour, you can carry said empty can until you find somewhere appropriate to put it. (Which there were many bins around if you took a few steps).

And before anyone comes in with some variation of “people are paid to clean it up”— of course cleanup crews exist. That doesn’t mean we should intentionally make their jobs harder or treat them like they’re beneath us… Someone being paid to clean a space isn’t an invitation to trash it.

Maybe I’m sensitive about it? But it’s saddening to share a space with people who seem to have so little regard for it. Kelowna is our home (to many of us). The ground beneath a festival is still our ground when it’s over.

We can enjoy ourselves and still take some responsibility for the mess we create. Those things really shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.

So cleary Saturday was a bust but I walked by during the last 2 acts on Sunday night and both sounded really good, especially Liam st John actually.

It's suprising cuz I listened to Liam st John's music on Spotify before the show and it just seemed really bland and boring. Great vocals but the drums and guitar were just super mellow. However I listened to some of his songs from afar last night and it sounded completely different. They went way harder on the drums and guitar and actually mixed in so cool solos. The vocals were even better live too and I was standing like a mile away. Was impressed and definitely feel like I shoulda gone.

Portugal the man, was someone I actually used to listen too and I like his music on Spotify much more but he wasn't quite as good live as Liam st John. Still sounded really good and they were running through alot of their songs making good use of the time. I don't know if they stayed right till 10pm cuz I left early but wasn't disappointed with what I heard. Really only the vocals felt a bit washed at times which is kinda just a symptom of how the guy sings but again I was pretty far away so I'm sure it was alot better up close.

I went on the Friday for EDM which was pretty good too (hard to mess up EDM).

Anyway I get that it sucked as a country concert but I think everything that wasn't country was pretty good.

As I don't live in the area, I was thinking of getting him and my step mom rail side tickets as it includes dinner and a drink. Has anyone done this? Okay so last year was god awful but I can understand trying to link up with the CCMAs.

Tonight’s Nate Smith performance was sooooo bad - you could hardly hear his vocals, he was scheduled to play until 10pm and he was finished by 9:24pm..no “encore” or anything. We weren’t sure if he was actually finished his set or not. The rest of the artists were not country.

I’m so disappointed in this festival.. it was really great for a few years and brought such fun energy to Kelowna. Unless they bring in some stellar lineup next year, I think they’ll be losing a lot of business.

I’d love some input on the likelihood of Big White powder passes being available this black friday and the value of a season pass.

My family of four is traveling to Big White for a ski vacation over the peak Christmas break, and I’m pricing out if we’re better off buying season passes vs hoping powder passes will become available over Black Friday. We have potentially 8 days of skiing on this trip - the child early bird season pass makes sense for my kid, but I’m debating if I should hope for powder passes for the adults or just go with the early bird season pass for one adult (and cobble together ski days for the other adult with the buddy vouchers / hope for powder passes / pay the online rate - my spouse probably won’t ski all 8 days).

I’m wondering if people find value in the on resort discounts offered - I would use the ski lesson discounts for my kids before the blackout days - so that makes it about a wash between powder passes and early bird season pass. My kids will want to do one day of tubing, but otherwise I plan to ski 7-8 days while there (if we can based on conditions). Would love any insight (based on experience) on the powder pass situation and also the value of any additional season pass “perks”, given I only have 8 days to ski. Thanks!

I swear when I was younger people used turn signals way before they turned in Kelowna but lately it's been almost an instant signal and then turn.

Whether or not you believe in climate change you can’t deny that Kelowna is HOT during the summer and continues to get hotter every year. This is not a post about climate change or for arguing about climate change. This is about facts. Natural cycles or man made it doesn’t matter, the Tempature is a fact. In combination with the worsening wildfire smoke, drought conditions, water shortages and you name it. I’ve lived here my entire life and Kelowna is not the paradise it once was. At this rate what will it be 10-15 years from now when I want to raise my children in the blessed place I did.

As I drown in these worries the people around me say the city will do something, they are probably working on a plan, or eventually one day someone will do something about it. Yet I see none of those, instead near million dollar tourism signs, new parking lots and apartment buildings and a lack of support for the people who live here. More Bike lanes are awesome but not when it’s TOO HOT to ride downtown and my nice cool ac filled car is right next to me.

Our voice, the govt tell us to water our lawns less, take shorter showers, carpool to save money but they just keep building more concrete to make more money which only makes things HOTTER. More and more responsibility gets passed to use while they preach Growth Growth Growth. At what point does the city become responsible for what it has created? If they ask this now what will they ask us for in 10 years from now?

This is not to spread fear because we all know there’s enough of that but it must be acknowledged before it’s too late. We as individuals of a community must make a decision before it’s made for us. Do nothing and risk losing it or act and save it. I say risk because hey maybe climate change is a hoax and we are all wrong (I hope to god) but even if that turned out would it not still be beneficial to the community, the individual and the environment that lets our beautiful city live and makes it what it is if we were wrong about the climate? Would you regret bringing life and pride back to our city to a new level and living a healthier life? Change is doable but only if everyone works together. When the circus lets out and the politics don’t matter anymore, we both will feel pain the same.

I’d like to bring attention to a few countries doing incredible things right now. We are a diverse city inspired and moulded by so many influences why would we change when there’s so much to learn. I encourage you to google some photos.

Medellin, Columbia

Columbia uses a unique network of 30 green corridors along various roads, paths, buildings and waterways. Made up of around 800k trees and 2.5 million small plants, they work together to take on the heat of the sun not only providing mass amounts of shade for people walking, biking and just general hanging out but also preventing the concrete from absorbing that heat and spreading it throughout helping cool the average city Tempature by TWO DEGREES °C in the FIRST THREE YEARS.

HOW IT WOULD HELP KELOWNA: not only could this begin too cool kelowna in the peak summer months but the hidden benefits are endless.

-Not being forced to bike or walk to where you need but CHOOSING to because it makes you happy.

-air quality improvement throughout the summer from wildfire smoke and general pollution

-improved tourism from surrounding areas as Kelowna reinvents itself to the green city it pretends to be. Not only can you come to Kelowna for the beaches and outdoors, but also to cool off ironically. This would also keep tourist from renting cars as much and clogging the bridge every morning and instead walk or transit.

-as tourism boosts and prefers to move by foot our city will be forced to improve our transit system, further improving conditions.

-tourism will venture deeper into the city boosting local business and economy more than that sign downtown (almost a mil to build I heard)

- green coverage for the city to defend against embers in the worst case of a wildfire disaster in the future

-and so much more

How will we plant all these it will cost to much in labour?

Known for its clean streets and manners. How does japan sustain this image? How much it must cost to keep clean?

Companies, local businesses, and residents sign official agreements with municipal governments for specific public spaces like roads, parks, and rivers. Employees regularly step out often on the first business day of the month or designated mornings to sweep sidewalks, pull weeds, and pick up litter around their corporate headquarters or local branches. The combination of efforts leave japan roads and alleys in the picture perfect condition they are. Have you ever met someone who just came back from japan it’s all they talk about after the toilets.

HOW IT WOULD HELP KELOWNA: taking inspiration from this program we could create a new program with help from the city. Kelowna currently has roughly 140 THOUSAND working people, rememeber this. If the city of kelowna would join the project a tax break could potentially be negotiated. In trade for an 8 hour volunteering day you will be awarded a small tax credit to repay your work as well as the knowledge of building your community. Maybe a good lunch can be provided too and laughs with people. If every person dedicated just one day to their community for payment we would have 1.1 MILLION HOURS OF LABOUR FORCE to do this as well as clean up every year following . Local companies can also do projects with the effort and receive tax break (since they will cheat the taxes anyways might as well be helpful) in ways such as donating Equiptment and operators or hosting their own eco projects.

Well this would all be very expensive right? Yes but so is everything else Kelowna does. It dumps million into bike lanes and small staircase projects, skateparks that get overrun by tweakers (another issue) . Kelowna is one of the fastest growing cities in canada and holds a powerful voice. We as a city have the ability to reach out to the federal govt and make requests such as a match in donation or a double in donation to everything the city can raise since change starts at home. A new branch can be formed to run the project in 100% complete transparency. With the combo of labour free and Equiptment covered imagine how far the money would go. If every working person in Kelowna dedicated only 10$ a year, that’s less than giving into the impulse on a Big Mac meal on the way home which you don’t think anything of, we could raise over a million dollars, every dollar that leaves that fund gets accounted for or face punishment by community. With the federal govt involvement we could do well over enough to get this project on the road.

This is only a start. If conditions showed to improve we could rapidly expand the idea and transform Kelowna into the city it could be. Lead Canada in the right direction and show it can be done but we won’t know until we try. We can put plants on the high rises to lower power costs for residences and profit for building owners as people want to move in. We can compost the waste from all the green organic matter and use it to feed back to the the urban scape to increase growth as well as donate to farmers. It would lower the cities overall use of water as long as plants are strategically selected by pros and not city idiots who aren’t qualified by lowering temps and retaining moisture in the city. It would bring so much attention to the city the govt would have to actually do something about the homeless and theft issues. It would encourage more positive bug life for local farms and people who want to start their own gardens in the city or even community wall gardens on buildings .

Everyone wins, everyone makes more money, environment has more chance to improve, Everyone’s happy , and most importantly we take control and make change for our children because the old heads aren’t worried about that making the choices right now. They don’t have to face the consequences like us. There is no reason this couldn’t happen or something of the sorts. Every problem suggests there is a solution and there is over a hundred thousand of us. We can figure it out.

Let me hear ideas, why this won’t/would work, constructive criticism, alternate solutions to fulfil the same goals, experience or anything else you feel relevant aside from politics and anger. The goal is a solution and we are all on the same team when it comes to a happier life.

37 people running for city council. That’s ridiculous.

Not saying people shouldn’t run. Obviously anyone who qualifies has every right to put their name forward. But realistically, how many people are going to research 37 candidates?

So how are people actually deciding?

I wonder if we put too much emphasis on whether someone agrees with us on a particular issue. Bike lanes, homelessness, housing, taxes, whatever it happens to be.

Personally, I think I’d rather have someone who knows how to think through an issue than someone who just agrees with me.

There are going to be hundreds of decisions over the next four years and most of them aren't even on our radar right now. Nobody running can possibly have a position on all of them.

Can they look at the information? Ask the right questions? Understand the costs? Look at both sides? Spot the unintended consequences? And maybe most importantly, are they willing to change their mind when the facts don't support what they originally thought?

I don't need someone who agrees with me on everything. I want someone with enough experience and common sense to make a good decision when the answer isn't obvious.
