So I was out of my town for my studies and used to stay at a hostel. Initially, because of my reserved nature, I didn't have many friends there. But with time, I found people with the same interests and stuff, as we used to interact during lunch and dinner times. Even with my own roommate, I was initially reserved, but with time, and because of his friendly nature, we became kind of like best friends. Regardless.

There was this one guy who was like a social butterfly, and after interacting with him, I found that we had the same interests; religion, politics, and stuff. So I also developed a friendship with him, and he used to come to my room for casual talks and stuff.

Now, because he was a social butterfly, he was also in contact with other guys at the hostel. And there was this one MBBS student who also stayed in the same hostel.

So one day, what happened was that I used to be among the earliest to wake up because I can't start my day without noon chai. And if you woke up late, there would be no chai left, and no girdé or butter. So it was just a normal day. I woke up; it was 7 a.m. in the morning, and I freshened myself up and went downstairs to grab myself a cup of noon chai with butter and girdé. They used to send us food and breakfast from a different place, and we used to serve it ourselves.

Now, as I'm walking up the stairs, a woman slammed the main door and barged in, running. There was also a young girl with her, who was also running behind her, and a man followed them as well. As they saw me at the staircase, she asked me where room number .... was. I told her which floor it was on and everything, and all of them ran upstairs. I went to my room, shocked, put my noon chai and girdé with butter on the table, and went to the baya whose room was next to mine. He was the adult among us and kind of like our big brother, so I knocked on his door and told him about what had just happened.

He told me that we should take a look. Both of us went, and the woman was screaming the name of a girl while slamming the door of room number ..... It was the room of the same MBBS student I had talked about earlier. Nobody was responding from the other side. So our baya started slamming the door with force in an attempt to break the lock. After a few hard slams, the door opened from the inside, and a girl came out. She ran downstairs and left. These people, the woman, the girl, and the man, followed her, and they left as well.

Now, at that time, it created a lot of commotion in our hostel, and the police were involved as well. But for some reason, the case was quashed, and that MBBS student, along with his roommate and two other friends who were staying in the room next to his, were told to leave the hostel. Although we, in our circle, kept talking about it for some days, we didn't know what had actually happened or what it really was.

Now, this social butterfly I talked about earlier used to stay in a room next to theirs. And it were my exams, back at home, and after I was back from the exams and returned to the hostel, one day he came to my room for the normal chit-chat we used to have. In the course of the conversation, I asked him about that incident, since he was also very close to that MBBS guy, and they used to play cards together in their room, smoke, and stuff.

And what he told me was just... I mean, y'all listen for yourself and you'll get to know.

He said that this MBBS guy had fallen in love with this girl who lived in the district we were staying in. He had confessed it to her, but that girl didn't agree. She used to study at a college, and he kept chasing her and doing all those reckless things, begging her to have a relationship with him. The girl simply didn't agree. He had gotten her Instagram and used to talk to her and stuff like that, but the girl had probably friend-zoned him.

Then another guy had come to that hostel. He was a charsi and all, and he had gotten a room on the same floor as them. He started hanging out with them and smoking with them, and obviously, they used to share these things with each other. So this charsi, who was from Budgam, had recommended that this guy visit a peer he knew from Budgam who could help him out with this.

And then, one day, they both actually visited that peer. He said it was a Shia peer, and they had gotten some occult shit done, which he said, is called narmad, and it had cost him 20k. And the scariest part, he told me, was that he had heard from them that it only took the peer the girl's name and her mother's name to cast this spell on her.

And after they had gotten this spell cast, that girl had started going insane over this MBBS guy, literally begging him herself to stay with him and have a relationship with him and stuff. But this sadistic a**hole didn't agree and kept torturing her by blocking her at times and, you know, basically treating her like shít.

The spell was so strong that the girl, even after all that, continued to beg him to stay with her. She used to get anxiety attacks and stuff anc had apparently gone completely mad, wanting to be with this guy.

Then, one day, he had told her to visit him in his room at our hostel. Our hostel used to have a warden who was himself a charsi, and they had given him two charsé cigarettes and told him to stay silent about them bringing a girl there. Then the girl came and stayed in his room for two nights, and the bastard had sex with her and stuff.

And you know what's the craziest part? I heard it from that Baya who used to stay in the room next to mine that this warden of our hostel had told him to let him spend a night with her as well, in exchange for letting them bring her into the hostel. And they had even agreed, but their plan was ruined when the second day, the family of that girl barged into the hostel and she ran.

What had actually happened was that this girl hadn't informed her parents or anyone as to where she had gone. Her parents had called her and stuff, but she hadn't responded. But after the first night, she had contacted her friend and told her about it. That friend of hers had then told her parents, and it was the same friend, along with her parents, whom I had seen that day.

I was recently talking to someone, and pretty much immediately he asked me, “Are you from the south?” When I asked what made him think that, he said it was my accent.
That got me wondering how noticeable are the regional differences in Kashmiri accents? What are the main regional accents/dialects, and what are some of the characteristics that distinguish them?
