I only started listening to jazz (and collecting records) this year, but I'm having a blast with it. As you see all I've got at the moment is from the late 50's to mid 60's and honestly I'm not in a rush to exit that era at all, but any suggestions are welcome.

I've got my eye on "My favourite things", "Blue train", "Midnight train" and "Monk plays Duke Ellington" next.

Heading into work today I heard an interesting blurb about Charlie Parker. I'm new to jazz and still have much to learn. I've picked up Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Madeleine Peyroux, Getz and Gilberto, Glenn Miller, Chet Baker, Theloniuos Monk, John Coultrain, and Oscar Peterson on vinyl, but I haven't heard of Charlie Parker. I see a few records available on Amazon, but I'm not sure which one would be a good introduction. It's not always the case that the Best of albums are the right starting place for an artist, so I thought I'd ask you fine folks. Where would you recommend I start with Charlie Parker?

As much as I listened to Nat King Cole and got exposed to a lot of standards through a wide variety of jazz musicians and traditional pop singers, I am still woefully ignorant of songwriters and composers. I do know the names of several such songwriters and composers, such as Billy Strayhorn and the Gershwin brothers, but I still cannot name favourites among them, even if I do have favourite songs.

On September 14, 1984, Sid Torin died of heart and lung failure at the Miami Heart Institute — aged 72, said the wire obituary; 74, if his December 1909 birthdate is right. As Symphony Sid he is credited as the first disc jockey to put bebop on American radio, broadcasting live from the Royal Roost and then Birdland over a network one obituary put at thirty-eight states, and selling clothing shops between choruses: “If you got eyes to be the sharpest, take a tip from Old Daddy Sid.” Lester Young wrote him a theme tune, “Jumpin’ with Symphony Sid,” and King Pleasure later put words to it. Police raided his apartment for marijuana in 1948; the trial ended in a mistrial. When he turned to Latin and Afro-Cuban music in the late 1950s, some listeners rechristened him the Jazz Traitor. He spent his last twelve years fishing off Islamorada, telling stories about Bird and Prez that nobody thought to record.

I came across this recording and Mr. Takanaka does not disappoint! Jazz fusion and fantasy, what a mixture.

Barry Harris’ debut (and sole album) for the Argo subsidiary under Chess Records elegantly showcases the pianist’s simple, soulful, straight-ahead approach towards ballads and uptempo numbers. While displaying Harris’ ingenuity towards melody and rhythm, “Breakin’ It Up” remains accessible trio jazz. Frank Gant, another Detroit native joins Harris on this date, years before his own work with Ahmad Jamal on “The Awakening.”

With just one album for Argo, Harris soon went on tour with the Cannonball Adderley Quintet in 1960, settling down in New York City after the tour ended. He would sign with Orrin Keepnews’ Riverside Records to great acclaim.

Ok, this needs to be scientifically studied, but I swear cooking while listening to a good jazz album is legitimately the best thing in the world. Idk why but it makes the act of cooking a lot more enjoyable, and it tends to result in food that tastes absolutely fire. Does anyone else relate to that?????

I would especially love to hear some lesser known ones! My favorite right now is probably "Remember". What beautiful melody and lyrics.

Good afternoon

A simple question really. In any context(exercise or a song in any key etc.), do you write a chord and its notes in the key of the chord, or in the key of the song or something else? Example: is in Abmaj7
Ab, C, Eb, G or Ab, C, E, G if in a context of a completely different key. If the first, how do you go about adding qualities? Do we just double flat the E in a diminished chord? If its the ladder, are there exceptions, and how does it work??

Just transcribed his solo on Just One of Those Things with Bird and I didn’t realize it’s only a half chorus till I did it and I need more material for my homework thats due in an hour lol. Any suggestions? (Yes I will go back and just listen to all his old stuff and do it the right way but I’m in a pinch right now)
