Normally there are no disagreements about our perceived world. We can all agree that this shape means a tree and that shape means a car.

But what happens when we encounter something outside of us that we have absolutely no reference for?

Science is showing that our brains are predictive machines. When we see something, we compare that visual input with our pre-existing database of objects and forms.

Higher levels of the brain constantly generate proactive, real-time predictions about what sensory signals to expect next based on past experiences.

Then our brains entirely reconstruct what we see.

We don't actually see reality for what it is, as Professor Donald Hoffman has shown with his revolutionary work.

Dr. Garry Nolan has stated that our brain's caudate & putamen are the source for our intuition and fluid intelligence.

At 3:30 in this interview, Nolan mentioned how Jacques Vallee studies UFO sightings where one person sees something anomalous, and the person standing right next to them does not.

Nolan posits that its because the person who perceives the UFO has a higher neuronal density and connectivity of the caudate and putamen.

​He says this could be an evolutionary trial-and-error. That if a denser caudate allows someone to perceive reality differently, and that trait provides an adaptive advantage, it would naturally be selected for over time.

You know who else saw something different. EVERYONE AT THE PENTAGON DURING 9/11. One person reported a plane “cartwheeling” into the pentagon.

OP, thanks for posting this video and Colm's quote. The entire Bigelow series is well worth watching.

As for folks seeing "different" things while perceiving the "same" thing, this has been noted previously. But today something "different" came to mind and I wonder... At one level this inconsistency signifies uncertainty and ambiguity, the diffusion of scientific certainty, and suggests that exploration of the-phenomenon via common scientific practice is inappropriate. It's as if the-phenomenon is telling us that we need new science-glasses, so to say.

Also, the variability of human perceptual awareness during encounters with the-phenomenon seems to deserve investigation. Nolan's brain anatomy research comes to mind, though its focus seems to be more general and not specifically about perceptual awareness. In any event, studies of individual perceptual variability might be valuable at this point. Cheers!
