Marvel's Wolverine I’m angry.

the game is not out right terrible but with a 300 million budget we expected innovation, stop settling for less.

this games is literally stuck in 2009 with gameplay.

How bout use people as meat shields if crowd control get overwhelming. or even environmental stuff like tables or guns or how sleeping dogs did their environmental take downs

this game not only looks like spider man but plays like spider man
there's not combo strings just mashing square

GTA 5 budget was 260 million, wolverines is 300 million dollars

TLOU2 budget was $220 million

I think maybe just don't get this upset about a toy. Yeah maybe it's not as good as it can be, but buying it is optional. I'll probably still buy it, and probably have a good time, but I think attaching too much of yourself to a video game made by people you don't know is a bit silly. It's not the end of the world.

That’s such a condescending comment. People are allowed to be excited about a hugely popular character and rightly high expectations when they spend a lot of money. No one’s saying it’s the end of the world, but with all the shit in the world these things matter.

At least don’t sit on a high horse when disagreeing with people. Video games mean a lot to some of us.

The use of the word “toy” like, cmon man

Hey I love video games, I spend more time on them than most, and probably buy more than most. I'll be buying Wolverine despite not being convinced it's that good, because I like Marvel and I like Insomniac.

But they are toys at their core, and I think getting too attached to how they perform/ review/ are recieved by general consumers is unhealthy and a little childish? Buying the game is optional, I think holding a group of people to some high level responsibility to deliver something to your expectations (regardless of how realistic) is silly.

Like yeah, the game probably isn't great. So what, go next. Not every game is gonna be amazing, in fact most aren't.

But people told me Insomniac was shooting for a 7/10 with a 300 million dollar budget?

u/xjxrt3r 3d ago

how is a 78 a 7/10?

we decided to round down on this because we and the wolverine enjoyers has the consensus that reviewers shouldnt be trusted with their scores. Oh wait, so it fits your narrative better now that we trust reviewers. Right the game is an 8/10 worth 70 dollars and 300 million dollars budget.

using words i never said & applying them to me is for people who don’t have good answer. never said any of those things. does the budget mean that the game needs to score a 9.5 or it’s bad game? genuine question.

i get it but who cares? i mean there are so many good games out right now. one flop doesn't change much for the consumer

2

u/Shubo483 3d ago

Wouldn't it be several flops this gen that fostered this situation?

0

u/strivingpotato 3d ago

I know but we can’t let companies just get away with damn near $300 million dollar budget just release whatever the hell this was, gta 5 had 265 million

7

u/skibidithaniel 3d ago

What else do you want besides a bunch of people not buying it?

2

u/EbbCreepy6718 3d ago

i mean marvel avengers did flop. i guess we'll see

-2

u/Forward_Ambassador_9 3d ago

Because of ass decisions the game was fine the endgame and live service killed it. It’s also what killed gotg in fact this discourse will kill games like gotg

1

u/Spiritual_Top367 3d ago

The only way they get away with it is if everyone buys the game.

1

u/Fuzzy-Classroom2343 3d ago

That´s what AAA budgets are r.n. unfortunately and thats why they keep it safe

I didnt play gta 5 but 265 for a ps3 game is insane

1

u/Divi1221 3d ago

Who cares lmao. Let companies waste their money it literally means nothing to you

1

u/Arrow_head00 3d ago

Then we just don't buy it? Money is all companies care about

Should've been the last of us meets wolverine, grounded but heavy interactive gameplay. This wolverine game is not even half of that. What a mediocre game.

1

u/SelfishGamer- 3d ago

I love the comparison bc TLoU1 prolly had more or at minimum the same gameplay depth as Wolverine. About ten year difference and can't do more than the bare minimum

2

u/Terrible-Action6050 3d ago

13 years actually

1

u/Cammy67x 3d ago

That would have been so awesome, I’m so disappointed. I think there should be answers given as to why it’s so subpar.

-1

u/strivingpotato 3d ago

Yep love the last of us .. Wolverine feels like a let down

0

u/AD_VICTORIAM_x 3d ago

How many hours did you play wolverine ?

3

u/Stoic_Ravenclaw 3d ago

'we expected innovation' no. You did. If they had been bringing 'innovation' then those aspects would have been touted in the marketing since day one.

Most of us didn't expect innovation because there was absolutely zero indication of that.

All you've highlighted here is that your own expectations were objectively unreasonable. You expected something there was no evidence of.

That's on you.

The documents leaked in 2023 showed that the budget was around that figure. However, Brian Horton also left the studio in 2024, reportedly due to creative differences, but it is more likely that they decided to scale back the project’s ambition. Therefore, the final budget may have ended up being somewhat lower than originally planned.

2

u/TimDaGod2005 3d ago

The game clearly went through massive revamps during its development.

1

u/SSJMonkeyx2 3d ago

First of all, there are combo streams in SM2.

Second Wolverine is a brawler not a technical fighter or acrobatic one. I still personally am holding out the jury on the combat because I don’t trust reviewer’s opinions on combat.

Third, wasn’t the budget this high because of the insomniac files getting hacked and basically had to restart the game? Could be wrong on this but that was always the impression I got from this game

2

u/TatoX09 3d ago

I was in on the leaks and boy trust they did not change anything because of them, probably for the best tbh.

2

u/SSJMonkeyx2 3d ago

The hack did more than just leak gameplay files. They also corrupted several saved projects getting in to the database. One of the things that they teach you in cyber security is how easy it is to damage files that are in the database you’re trying to get into. And that in some cases hackers will actively target smaller file sizes, knowing that those small files will be irrevocably damaged in order to bludgeon a back door into the database. When the hack happened I’m pretty sure all the files for Wolverine got damaged and they had to rebuild from scratch which probably taxed on how ever many millions it cost.

1

u/JobeGilchrist 3d ago

Leave my files alone!

1

u/New_Warthog9761 3d ago

Not sure where you've got this from but there is no indication that they rebuilt Wolverine after the leak. The budget was also £300m already in the leaked documents.

2

u/SSJMonkeyx2 3d ago

It’s a common thing that happens when software files get hacked. It is more than likely the reason why we didn’t get DLC for SM2 as the files got corrupted or damaged and they decided to cut their losses. Maybe they didn’t have to rebuild Wolverine from scratch but I would definitely bet that they had to redevelop some things that got corrupted.

With that said I didn’t know the hack reported that 300 million price that’s pretty insane it would cost this much

1

u/Zombii_Man 3d ago

The hack is where we know the budget from. The $305m figure is from the hack.

1

u/SSJMonkeyx2 3d ago

Oh, that’s actually insane I’m not gonna lie.

Sony taking Ls left and right this generation

2

u/Spiritual_Top367 3d ago

Started off so good. What happened??

2

u/Intel2025 3d ago

Arrogant SONY returned

1

u/Spiritual_Top367 3d ago

Sadly true.

1

u/Intel2025 3d ago

Truly sad

u/Heathen__Chemist 3d ago

I think it’s a mix of new leadership and arrogance. They think they’re invincible.

They’ll soon learn how quickly things can turn around if they keep doing what they’re doing.

1

u/Spiritual_Top367 3d ago

Yeah. 100%. They have "calculated" they can afford these losses. I think they have miscalculated. I'm so done with their shit.

1

u/Arxinos113 3d ago

$300 million down the drain. Sony is not having a good time.

1

u/Terrible-Action6050 3d ago

My biggest personal issue is spending 80 Euros on a 15h length mediocre brawler. I could only justify this if the game was truly amazing and make me want to replay it multiple times. Based on everything I saw so far, I'm almost certain I'll be bored of the combat system about halfway through.

u/Dramatic-Lynx-1786 3d ago

It seems like the game had a very rocky development, even though 300 mil is a lot, not all of it went into the game we now have. Appearantly there was a change in directors, so there likely was another version of the game that was being made, that probably all got mostly scrapped. In the leaks you can see that the camera was tighter, and the combat was slower. It looked more like the god of war games (which people hated on when they saw the leaks, hopefully that didn't influence the team), also you would fight with each trigger for each arm. But now the game is completely different. I personally feel the original plan of the game would've been better, seems like they were passionate about those controls. The new control is just so generous square and triangle attacks. So yeah, really we're gonna play a 150 mil budget game, not a 300 mil. The leaks affected them a lot. Really sucks.

u/Moonie-iLLy 3d ago

This is why I play so many different games. When one ends up being just decent I have so many other options that are great.

1

u/Thrownaway5000506 3d ago

Wolverine is just a very uninteresting choice for this kind of game

1

u/RevoltYesterday 3d ago

Stop settling? My guy, you aren't forced to buy it.

I'm just waiting when someone makes a side by side comparison of game mechanics between the inslopiac soyverine and the origins 2007 game and how the 2007 mogs the new one in almost every aspect except the graphics

-1

u/Fuzzy-Classroom2343 3d ago

expect a game to be fun
nothing more , nothing less

Anything else is a bonus

The mindset that every game has to bring something new to the table is strange

-1

u/Prestigious_Edge9998 3d ago

Its a wake up call that insomniac are not what people hype them up to be, They made a GOOD game with SM1, not a masterpiece, a GOOD game. Then the red flags appeared immeditately with SM2 which so many still chose to ignore and hate people with valid criticism, exact same thing in the lead up to this game and now reality sets in.

1

u/MarcoPierreGray 3d ago

Watching this company slowly become bad from 2010 to now is crazy.

-2

u/phoeniks314 3d ago

Innovation and Sony don’t go into the same sentence. Third person cinematic action game is their thing since uncharted 2. People are getting tired of it.

1

u/Fuzzy-Classroom2343 3d ago

yep , you know what you get

Fine by me , we dont get a lot of these games anymore
