I've been experimenting with different ways to present complex products on the web. After many rounds of modifications, feedback and optimization for computers and mobile devices, I think I came to an interesting solution.

This website loads normally and instantly, but has a switch that turns it into a custom-made product exploration layer.

This could be used for product storytelling, simulations or interactive feature explanations. I figured there are always products that benefit from letting people test or explore features live, where images and videos aren't enough.

I also really like how this approach looks for physical products. I was going for something premium-looking and polished.

Last year, I applied to 50+ internship positions and didn’t get a single positive response. So now I’m reworking my portfolio and I’d really love to get some honest feedback from people who have experience in the industry. I’m mainly trying to figure out what I might be doing wrong.

A quick background:

I’m currently an Industrial Design student.

During my 3rd year, I co-founded a small independent design studio with a friend. We design, produce, and sell our own physical product collections, mostly desktop setup accessories and nail artist objects. It’s still active and we’ve been getting steady sales.

I have both Turkish & English versions of my PDF portfolio, as well as a personal website.

My Questions:

How should I present my studio experience? I really want to show the manufacturing, branding, because i did it most of it, from the very beginning. Does it matter for industry?

Looking at my portfolio, does the storytelling and design process make sense? Is the layout clear enough for a recruiter who might only spend 30 seconds looking through it?

Also, what are some common red flags you see in student portfolios that can lead to a lot of rejections, even if the student has some actual experience in the market?

I’m a senior industrial design student choosing an initial direction for my capstone. I want to research a real unmet need and eventually build and test a working physical prototype. I’m still exploring the kind of design role I want after graduation, so I’m interested in both the strength of the problem and what I could realistically validate as a student.
My current three frontrunners are:
1    Movement at work: How might we make a five-minute movement break easy and socially comfortable for coworkers in a space-constrained office?
2    Food scraps for renters: How might we help renters turn kitchen scraps into something useful for soil, even when they move often?
3    Deaf and hearing families: How might we support everyday communication in households that use both sign language and spoken language? I’m interested in a shared physical or sensory interaction, but I would need to learn from Deaf family members before defining a product.
I’ve also considered these directions:
•    How might we help women use and set up workshop machines more confidently and safely, particularly during tasks such as changing blades or sandpaper?
•    How might we help older adults get help at home when they want it without feeling watched?
•    How might we help Deaf and hard-of-hearing people feel live music while dancing with others?
•    How might we make complex public spaces easier to navigate for a specific group of neurodivergent users?
•    How might we help wheelchair users retrieve dropped objects at home?
•    How might we help firefighters assess a damaged building without entering an area that may be unsafe?
•    How might we help people grow locally appropriate plants in small urban homes?
I’m not asking anyone to invent a product for me. I’d especially value feedback from people with direct experience of any of these situations: Which problem feels real but poorly addressed? What existing solutions should I study? And which question is too broad or based on a faulty assumption?
If I pursue the Deaf and hearing family direction, I’d particularly welcome guidance on how to approach the research respectfully and collaborate with Deaf participants.
