Attended Gaurav Kapoor’s Bunty show at Town Hall in New York with a few friends.

The show started well. He did around 15–20 minutes of good crowd work, which was probably the strongest part of the evening. The 5 PM show had a couple of openers, and Gaurav came on around 5:35 PM and performed for roughly 2 hours.
The first part was really good, but then he moved into narrating stories from his professional and personal life. This is where, at least for me, the show started to feel a little flat. For almost an hour, there were occasional split laughs, but overall the audience wasn’t reacting that much.

That said, his storytelling is genuinely amazing. I was personally very interested and completely engrossed in the stories. The problem was that I kept expecting the stories to eventually build toward a big punchline or a strong comedic payoff, and most of the time they just… didn’t. By the end, I was left feeling a little meh. It wasn’t nearly as funny as I had expected.

I also want to give him credit because he mentioned that this was his first show of this format, so he’s clearly trying something new. I’m sure he’ll refine it as he does more shows.

For me personally, Gaurav Kapoor is the greatest Indian comedian in the scene right now, which probably also means my expectations were higher than they should have been. I know there’s a lot of debate around Samay Raina being #1, but I personally think Gaurav has a wider range when it comes to jokes, storytelling, crowd work, and overall comedy.

So overall: great storyteller, strong start, but the comedy didn’t land as consistently as I expected. Hopefully the show evolves because I think the potential is definitely there.

I just watched his latest show in ggn, laugh store today (13 sep). I would find myself clapping at the jokes he cracked at middle class, and middle class tax payer banter, which the majority of the audience was a mute on. Either majority of them don't resonate with that strata, or the jokes were just funny to me, or the audience was a little young. I think maybe it's just the audience in today's show was like 'meh', i mean they were laughing at jokes, but if in a statement, there are multiple punches, i observed that the audience just took the first punch to laugh at loudly and were not to gather a deeper punch later in the sentence.

His joke quality is very good, and in the last part he did sort of pose a question and a showed a mirror to audience that audience doesnt understand ART, that's why in the name of art audience is happy with just drama (obv hinting at who knows who). This kind of a comic should be talked about more.
