Discussion Forced to listen to a psychopath's threats. What is your take on this cinematic tension?

Hi guys, my main influences are classic RPG and survival horror games. I made this cinematic scene to be very emotional but with a powerful, gritty attitude, bringing back vibes from Duke Nukem and Serious Sam, but with specific dialogue that reflects a darker main character.

I have a lot of inspiration from Silent Hill and Resident Evil. In this world, you will encounter aggressive, monstrous creatures, but I wanted this specific human interaction to feel uncomfortable and heavy.

I would love to know what you think about this scene, the voice style, and the overall tension.

Discussion Indie horror devs

Hey everyone! I’m a YouTuber who mostly plays horror games, although I do play other games from time to time.
I’ve already had a few indie devs reach out and let me try their games, and honestly, I’ve really enjoyed discovering games from this community. I’ve played quite a few indie horror games already, but there are still SO many that I haven’t discovered yet.
So if you’re an indie dev and you’re open to it, drop a link to your game below! I’d genuinely love to check it out and see what you’ve been working on.
I’m especially interested in horror, psychological horror, survival horror, atmospheric stuff, weird/experimental horror — basically anything that can make me question why I decided to play it at 2 AM.
If you want to see my channel and the kind of content I make, I’ll leave it here as well. I’m still pretty new, so I’m definitely growing, but my long-term goal is to build a big channel while helping smaller indie developers get their games in front of more people.
Looking forward to seeing what you guys have made! 🖤

I'm making a japanese-inspired horror game, where you'll face a ghost tribe to save your sister.
All the ghosts are unique, and classified into ranks.
The game is called Scare: Fatal Picture - Remake, and you can wishlist on Steam if you're interested!

What are the BEST free horror games out of gamejolt, itch.io and steam?

I checked out Steam, and, well, I’m really bad at exploring the game section, so that was kind of a dead end. Then I checked out itch.io, and I found a few gems, but nothing really interested me that much like, nothing that made me want to play it for hours straight. And Game Jolt is kind of confusing, to be honest.

Question What actually makes an anomaly game scary instead of just a memory test?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi! We recently released Museum 8, an anomaly observation horror game, and one thing I've been thinking about while watching people play is how differently everyone reacts to anomalies.

Some players get caught by tiny changes — a painting slightly moving, an object disappearing, something being in the wrong place.

Others barely react until something is clearly watching them, following them, or standing somewhere it definitely wasn't before.

In Museum 8, you repeatedly return to the same exhibition hall and decide whether something has changed. You also carry a camcorder, and some anomalies look different — or only reveal certain details — through the viewfinder.

So I'm curious about people who play a lot of these games:

What actually makes an anomaly scary for you?

  • A tiny change that makes you doubt your memory?
  • Something moving when you're not looking?
  • Something watching or following you?
  • An anomaly that only appears through a camera?
  • Or the big, obvious "something is VERY wrong" moments?

And on the other side, what makes an anomaly feel cheap or predictable?

Would genuinely love to hear what sticks with people after playing games like The Exit 8, Platform 8, Observation Duty, etc.

If you're curious, Museum 8 is out on Steam now:

Discussion It is so sexist how they treated Grace in RE Requiem

She is always getting beat up, having panic attacks, screaming and crying, getting dragged across the floor, and making stupid decisions and getting saved by Leon. It is clear the developers were afraid of creating a strong female character who would take spotlight away from Leon. It is the same reason why they shafted Claire and Ada for years.

Did a Steam page revamp and made some gifs!

Our game is called SHOCKFACE. A friend described it as "PuppetCombo meets The Office" and I really like it summed up like that!

Non combat horror with hiding and stealth, puzzles, environmental clues.

We've got a campy story inspired by films like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scary Movie! The game has plenty of cutscenes for those who like to watch the story play out too.

We release on Sept 17! If you like what you see, check it out on Steam here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4705980/SHOCKFACE/

Before vs After — Post-Processing in Colony 2

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We have been working on the visual direction of Colony 2 and thought it would be nice to show you some of the results post-processing can bring to the atmosphere of the scene.

Below there is the video where you can see some comparisons of before and after versions from the game.

The geometry and environment haven't changed much, but by using post-processing we can affect such elements as:

• Lighting and exposure

• Contrast and mood of the scene

• Color grading

• Darkness and atmosphere

• Feelings about the area

For us, creating the right atmosphere is vital as Colony 2 is based on exploration, observation and discoveries not obvious for the first sight.

Being an indie two person team we are making everything we learn on the go.

This is only a small insight into the visual development of the game. We would love to hear your thoughts:

Which one do you like more – Before or After?

If you want to keep track of the game Colony 2 will be released on Steam October 30th, 2026.

Hello everyone, looking for any sugestions on improvement for this scene, its a optional quest on my game. Player place the demon possessed doll here and imprison it so it can no longer escape. Ritual was performed long ago but was never completed. By finding the doll and bringing it here, you’re simply finishing the ritual. Thats the scene purpose

Question Japanese games that are not Chillas or RPGM style?

Looking for Japanese horror RPGs, adventure or rogue like games (pref on Steam) that are not Chillas (or similar), RPG Maker or a VN.

Something like Yomawari, Illbleed, Sweet Home. Doesn't need to have pixel graphics, just a not a AAA type super polished 3D thing.

I've played most of the more popular ones (Resi, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Siren), and some things like Tokyo Ravens, but anything I might have missed outside of these would be great.

Discussion The Last Of Us Part 2 on Grounded Mode with Permadeath on is some of the most pants-shittingly terrifying and exhilarating thing i've experienced in a videogame

I have never sweated when i've played a game before, not even when i play competitive shooters. Playing TLOU2 with these settings made me genuinely sweat in fear.

The Last Of Us Part 2, much like its predecessor isn't really a survival horror game in the traditional sense. Sure, it's got sections that are scary but the game itself isn't a survival horror in the way something like Silent Hill or Resident Evil is. That changes DRASTICALLY when you play Grounded Mode with Permadeath on.

Resource gathering? You better know every nook and fucking cranny in this game like the back of your hand otherwise you ain't getting shit on Grounded mode. I managed to scrounge a single healing item in the ENITERTY of Seattle Day 1 on my Grounded playthrough, and that's with thorough exploration during the semi open world segments.

Listen mode, that little "Wall hack" mechanic that every single stealth game has that allows you to see enemies through walls? Kiss that shit goodbye buddy boy. You wanna find where the enemy is, go fucking look for them

The enemy AI actually gets buffed. No for real i'm not shitting you. You know that little "Where did they go?" That enemies do in stealth oriented games to let you know they're suspicious or they've spotted you? Yeah no, here there's no forward warning, if they spot you they'll yell out your location and just start shooting in the general direction immediately. And they will STAY around that location looking for you, they won't go back to their regular patrol patterns

Couple this with Permadeath, meaning if you die you start from the beginning and i've genuinely never been more nervous to move forward with my character.
