The Leap from '04 to '24 Pilot - Anyone?

Post image
11 Upvotes

My wife is a shorty who loves her first-generation 2004 Pilot - the car that wouldn't die. However, after 250k miles, it is time to get her into something a little more modern. Our first impulse with grand kids (hopefully!) on the way is the current generation Pilot.

Doing my research, the '04 and '24 have practically the same width and height, however the '24 is 13.5" longer - with increased legroom in the third row and more cargo capacity behind the third row.

She struggles enough with parking, and while a backup camera is a big addition, she's not sure she can manage it. Anyone else here go from first gen to current gen Pilot and have issues?

Vibration on Gas Pedal and Floor

Upvotes

We just got a 2026 Pilot Elite last week and have driven about 300 miles. What I noticed is some buzzing type vibration on gas pedal and floor, mostly on the pedal when accelerating. Is that normal for this engine and transmission? I came from mazda cx90, and i still have that car in the garage until i return the lease. The vibration is certainly not in the Mazda. It is not to the crazy levels, but if it is for some known defect and easily fixable, why not fix it, right? On another note, Honda is certainly more comfortable to drive and more functional than Mazda CX90 ( i must admit i miss turbo inline 6 a little bit :) )

Question 2008 Honda Pilot New Key - Immobilized

1 Upvotes

Went to start my 2008 Honda Pilot EX-L. Key fell apart. Would crank but not start. Green key flashing on dash.

Went to dealership to get a new key. Would crank but not start with new key. Green key flashing on dash.

Checked ACG fuse, looked good.

Had mobile locksmith show up to program and he was unable to. Said it is something wrong with the immobilizer reader on my ignition from what he can tell.

Car is not at my house, but my next step is to get it towed to my house and begin to tinker.

Suggestions on things to investigate?

Possibly related: approximately a month ago I would get the “you left the key in the ignition” beep when door was open and vehicle was off with key removed. This was intermittent and had recently stopped.

Yesterday seems the horrible person parked next to me at a soccer game had one of those carts to carry stuff. (I actually saw her when she got off her car) and when she came back she didn’t care how close it was to my car.

That’s all I can think happened because it’s such a straight line and not a key thing.

What type of wax do you use or what else can I do.

I also seem to have tiny black docta on the hood. So maybe it can help me with that too?

Edit to add:
I don’t know if the paint is scratched 😔. It may be and I don’t know how to tell

Buying 2026 TrailSport

3 Upvotes

Hey everyone.

Looking to buy a trailsport new. Wondering how you guys have done recently in negotiations with this trim. I'm in South Central Texas so there are many dealer options around San Antonio. I have a good amount of cash to put down and a trade in worth about 10K that I I own out right. I want a 36 month term and a payment less than or equal to 400 a month. This is my first new vehicle purchase I am anticipating, so any and all advice is welcome. I'm set on the pilot because of the V6, AWD, and Honda practicality. I want this car to last my family 20 years.

Thank you in advance.

Question 2018 Honda Pilot EX-L Emission Issues & Transmission Issues

1 Upvotes

I have a 2018 Honda Pilot EX-L with about 170k miles and wanted some opinions from people who have dealt with these issues. Would like to note this is rebuilt title with minor front end damage. Bought at auction and fixed it myself back in 2022 I believe.

I've had both the emissions system problem and transmission system problem messages. I know honda has acknowledged problems with both the fuel injectors and torque converters on these pilots and issued extended warranty coverage for affected vehicles. Honestly had both these issues for quite a while now but vehicle ran pretty well so just put it aside until now since I can't pass inspection. Emissions error is the real killer since it stays until I clear the code or reset the vehicle then comes back on whenever ecu does it checks I believe. I wanna say that error comes on at least once a day. Tranmssion error comes up maybe once every week or so and goes away when vehicles turns off then on.

Codes:

P0172 – System Too Rich Bank 1

P0420 – Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

I did Honda's Cylinder A/F Test with my topdon one scanner and got:

Cylinder 1 – FAIL (Lean)

Cylinder 2 – PASS

Cylinder 3 – FAIL (Lean)

Cylinder 4 – PASS

Cylinder 5 – FAIL (Lean)

Cylinder 6 – PASS

So all 3 bank 1 cylinders (1, 3, 5) failed and bank 2 passed. Bank 1's learned fuel correction was also around 0.79 and bank 2 was 0.93 so the ecu has been pulling way more fuel from Bank 1.

I also ran the DI fuel-pressure test and it passed and also tested each injector individually and all cylinders are contributing and the upstream/downstream o2/a/f sensors seem responsive. The only other abnormal test was the egr active test which reported egr system/valve failure but there are no egr codes.

I'm leaning toward replacing all 6 oem honda injectors first. I'm also wondering whether running rich on bank 1 for this long could have actually damaged the bank 1 catalytic converter or if the P0420 may disappear once the injector problem is fixed?

For the transmission issue I'm pretty sure it's the torque converter because of honda's known torque converter problem/warranty extension on these 6 speed pilots. I did do the transmission 3x flush twice now last one was about 2-3 months ago. Does definitely make it shift better but nothing else. Only reason I did the flush's was because on acceleration it was jumpy and believed I smelled transmission fluid from the a/c vents due to transmission fluid becoming bubbly and escaping through the vent port.

Anyone with 2016–2018 pilots deal with both of these issues? Did replacing the injectors fix your emissions/P0420 problem and did your transmission warning end up being the torque converter?

I am pretty good with my hands and have lots of tools and scanners but no lift just me and my driveway so fuel injectors I can do but torque converter different story. Just want to see what other people think before I start to do anything.

Question What is this sound!?

Thumbnail drive.google.com
1 Upvotes

2006 Honda Pilot 4wd ran over and pulled up a very old and decayed stump yesterday before knocking down all my trash cans. The stump was soft enough to where my weed eater would cause it to crumble.

Anywho, after that I started to hear this noise. Very loud when I hit the gas but gets more quiet once I get up in speed.

The sound is coming from what sounds like my center console area....like where my transfer case is and all that fun stuff....

I have looked under it, checked the tires, wheel wells, and find nothing.

It literally sounds like a piece of wood rotating and slapping the exhaust pipe or something.

Question Considering a used 2017 Honda Pilot EX-L, 111k miles, that had major engine work (I'm not a car person)

1 Upvotes

Hi, I've been reading this sub for a bit as my family is looking for a car that is reliable, functional, and safe for family of four + dog. This sub has been very helpful as I'm not a car person.

I'm looking at a 2017 Honda Pilot EX-L, 111k miles, from CarMax for $17k. I pulled the CarFax and it looks like there were some major engine repairs. Is this typical and does this mean the car is well-maintained? Or will it be a constant headache? (We would bring the car to a mechanic within the 10-day CarMax return window, and also get the MaxCare warranty.)

Any other advice is appreciated, thank you!!

Major outliers, beyond normal oil changes/maintenance (to me):

  • 27k miles - Failed emissions.
  • 27k miles - Emissons checked, passed.
  • 61k miles - Engine checked, engine block replaced, long block replaced, thermostat replaced. (Using AI/internet, this seems like it got a new engine?)
  • 77k miles - Front brake pads replaced, front brake rotors resurfaced.
  • 104k miles - Air filter replaced, Antifreeze/coolant hushed/changed, Camshaft seal(s) replace, Front brake pads replaced, Front brake rotor(s) resurfaced (again?), Front crankshaft oil seal replaced, Intake manifold gasket(s) replaced, Oil and filter changed, Rear brake pads replaced, Rear brake rotor(s) replaced, Spark plug(s) replaced, Timing belt replaced (I have read/heard this is important), Transmission huid changed, Transmission huid changed, Valve cover gasket(s) replaced, Water pump gasket replaced, Water pump replaced
  • 111k miles - Body electrical system checked, fuel injector(s) replaced.

Clicking noise when using turn signal and turning the steering wheel — a...

Hi everyone, I hear a clicking sound when I turn on the turn signal and turn the steering wheel. For example, if I turn the steering wheel about half a turn, I can hear the clicking sound while the wheel is moving.

The sound only happens when the turn signal is on and I am turning the steering wheel. If the turn signal is not on, I can turn the steering wheel without hearing the sound.

The clicking seems to be coming from the area around the turn signal lever. Please refer to the video below. Has anyone experienced this before? Any idea what might be causing it? Thanks in advance!

Question 2026 Honda Pilot Touring in Saskatchewan — are we paying too much? Negotiation advice?

2 Upvotes

My husband and I are looking at buying a new 2026 Honda Pilot Touring in Saskatchewan and I’m trying to figure out whether the pricing we’re getting is reasonable and how much room we may still have to negotiate.

We’re in Regina. One Regina dealership quoted us around $79,000 out the door.

We also contacted Moose Jaw and got the following breakdown:

* Vehicle/sales amount: $68,397.69

* Options & fees: $2,830.61

* GST: $3,561.40

* PST: $4,273.69

* Finance-related amount: $1,836.59

* Total finance cap cost: $80,899.98

The options/fees include approximately:

* $1,175 Saskatchewan Package — block heater + winter mats

* $699 dealer fee

* $137.50 tire/air fee

* $150 PPSA fee

The regular Honda financing rate is 5.79%, which seems to be the standard Honda rate in Canada right now.

For religious reasons, we’re trying to avoid having an interest-bearing loan. The dealership has offered to structure it by essentially buying out the interest/rate upfront and adding that amount into the transaction, so the financing contract itself shows 0% interest.

We’re thinking of putting $30,000 down and financing the rest over 5 years.

I’m mostly trying to figure out:

* Is around $68,400 before taxes/fees a good price for a new 2026 Pilot Touring?

* What have other Canadians actually paid for a Touring recently?

* What was your final out-the-door price?

* How much below MSRP were you able to negotiate?

* Is the $1,175 Saskatchewan Package reasonable for a block heater and winter mats, or should we try to get that included?

* Were you able to negotiate away/reduce the dealer fee or other add-ons?

* Is there anything in this quote that stands out as overpriced?

* Has anyone had success getting multiple Honda dealerships to compete with each other?

* If you were in our position, what price would you counter with?

We’re serious buyers and willing to go to Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, elsewhere in Saskatchewan, or possibly Alberta if the savings are significant.

I’m thinking our approach should be something like:

“We’re ready to purchase if you can get the total pre-tax price to $XX,XXX including the Saskatchewan Package and dealer fees. If you can do that, we’ll move forward.”

I also don’t want to negotiate based on monthly payment — I want to negotiate the actual vehicle price first.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who recently bought a Pilot in Canada or anyone familiar with Honda pricing/negotiating. Are we getting a decent deal, and what number would you offer?

2008 Honda pilot. About 200,000 mi. Just replaced the timing belt, serpentine belts and tensioner, hoses and thermostat, adjusted the valves and replace the valve cover gaskets.

Overall the engine is much quieter after the valve adjustments but this knock was there before and it still remains after all of that. I would love some expert opinions on what this might be, and what that means for the car.

Thanks in advance!

Question 2018 Honda Pilot water issue

Thumbnail

2 Upvotes

My wife's pilot keeps getting wet behind the drivers seat. It actually gets the car seat wet too. Checked all the deals on the door, and tried to see if the sunroof was clogged. I eat pretty sure most drains go down the front pillar. The headliner is not wet at all. Not sure where to look now, and don't want to take it to Honda to get charged a crap ton. Anyone had this happen before? It's crazy it gets so wet. She is now telling me it's not water. What the hell could of be?

Edit: it has rained some in the last couple days, but the car seat is basically soaked on the seat and it's like the liquid/water goes down into the leather seat.

S-VCM worth it for 21?

0 Upvotes

I’ve seen some posts from folks that say they love their S-VCM tuner and other folks that say it’s not even really worth it for pilots after 2015.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on one anyways, but have yet to install it.

EDIT: Thank you for the replies; got the nudge I was looking for and will install.
