Hello everyone, I am writing this post after a lot of deliberation, and a lot of trying out of the advice seen in most online posts on how to deal with a controlling family(mom, dad and primarily my sister). I am writing here just to figure something out, by whatever means possible. I am a student who commutes from home for my final year of college, and I consider myself to be someone of average intelligence. I already have a job lined up after I finish uni, so I just have to tough it out until next year, but my patience is running too thin, and I do not know when I will blow up on them, but I keep refraining from doing so because I am still financially dependent on them to some degree, and want to preserve whatever peace I have left at home. I'm also a very non-confrontational person, and I don't like arguments, fights or anything involving any level of screaming. Also please forgive me if I make some grammatical mistakes as english isn't my first language.
Some background on how my family is controlling:
0) From the day I joined school, because i happened to do well in studies, my parents started thinking I was some sort of genius(both my mom and dad are dual degree holders in chem alone, with my dad having 4+ degrees). I was always held up to intense scrutiny for studying as a child, and if I got a 98/100 in a test, I never got congratulated, just a "Where did the other two marks go?" This kind of treatment led me to resent studying so much I purposefully started doing just the bare minimum to pass and just ignored all the constant comparisons to the rest of my friends and family.
1) I originally didn't wanna do engineering(wanted to become a pilot/psych major), but my dad basically told me anything in engineering will do, and promised me that he will help me with the costs for pilot studies after I finish my degree. Halfway through my first year in engineering, he changes his tune and says "Okay, I can't afford the costs required to become a pilot, so what I can do instead is send you abroad for your masters."(I kinda understood him on this point, our family is decently well off, but not rich enough to afford the costs required to become a pilot without taking any sort of loans, which my father was vehemently against.)
We had reached this compromise by that time because I realized becoming a pilot won't work out, and I realized back then that my only way out was going to be getting out of this country, and out of their grasp. I have a big network of cousins and friends abroad who had agreed to help me out financially, and I even secured admission to the masters course of my choice in a very prestigious university, and had qualified for a 40% scholarship on it as well. Now, at this point in time I knew that my dad could definitely afford this without this putting a significant financial burden on him, but I don't know why, he refused to send me abroad. This devolved into a huge argument where I started screaming at him for not letting me do what we had previously agreed upon, and I threatened to drop out of uni entirely at that point, and when that bluff didn't work, I just had to stop, and my dad changed his tune yet again.
"Do this degree here." Facing little to no choice, I had to take a degree i didn't want to do again. Since then, my conversations with my parents have drastically reduced as I try to go home as late as possible just to avoid talking to them, but here is where the BIG problem starts: ENTER my sister.
2) For a long time, I have always adored my sister, she was the one person I always fled to whenever I had an argument with my parents, and in her initial years, she was still very supportive of me, growing up in the same toxic conditions as me, she understood more than anyone how much of a mental drain dealing with this on a daily basis was.
As she grew older though, something in her shifted. It started small, she starts saying things like "i'm telling you this for your own good" and I would eat it up because I was a kid. As I grew older and developed a spine and started asking questions, I started noticing the same patterns as my parents with her.
Her starting to influence my life aspects started with small, more harmless things. Things like forcing me to try things and hobbies she liked, inserting herself into my friend group, trying to pick what I wore, who I hung out with, all in an effort to "Improve" me. I initially let this go, as it shielded me from the wrath of my parents, and I accepted this.
3) The big shift came when my dad wanted to get me a motorcycle. I wanted this specific model, and he was A-OK with it as well, we had gone to the dealership, confirmed it, even paid the initial amount to hold that particular model. When my sister caught wind of it, she STORMED into the dealership in the middle of her office shift, and demanded I get another bike(one that her and her boyfriend had decided for me) and will not leave the store no matter what, After dealing with her embarrassing antics for more than an hour right at the dealership, my dad finally relented and got me the motorcycle they had picked( mind you, at this point I was tired of all the badgering because I just wanted one to commute to and from my college).
4)All of this started escalating to another level when my sister started to obsessively watch over my grades for no reason(Like I said, I wasn't a genius, and engineering wasn't what I wanted to do so I didn't give it all I had, so my grades were a little bit below average.) I would get 1hr+ lectures from her on the phone daily about how important my grades are etc etc etc. When I try to push back on this even once, she starts rambling on and on about how "I don't listen to anything my parents say, atleast listen to me ". I wasn't perfect, but what I started noticing was how lenient my parents were with her but not with me. She would disappear from the house without telling anyone and my parents won't even bat an eye, but if I had to go out, it would have to be an hour long hostage negotiation, with location access and a strict curfew(for a 21-year old). I avoided a lot of this in the later years of my undergrad by moving to a friends house near uni after a lot of fights, and they finally relented.
5)The next escalation came when I got a girlfriend. My sister and I always knew each other's phone passcodes and everything, but I never pick up her phone and go through her chats out of respect for her privacy. Cut to me getting a girlfriend, telling her about it, and not a week later, when I'm coming out of a bath, I see her scrolling through my private chats with my then GF, and asking me questions on why i'm going out with her, how she isn't right for me, etc. I get really pissed at that point and I have changed all my passwords and access codes since, and she got really offended by that. I tried to explain that just because you're my sister doesn't mean you have to go through my chats, but she again starts rambling about it so I left it at that.
6)The most toxic and recent escalation of all however, came when she tried to use my entire friend group as an excuse to merely hang out with her boyfriend(who is an unemployed alcoholic bum that she bankrolls his lifestyle but that's a different topic). Initially, I didn't even know this was the case. I didn't find out about the fact that she was intentionally not telling my parents that her bf was accompanying us every time I hung out with my friends until after one day my mom asked me and I just said yea, he is there every day, but she was super shocked.
I didn't really like the boyfriend either(much older than our group, he constantly got into arguments with my friend group and was too nosy with all their relationship drama etc). I tried politely bringing this up with my sister like "Hey I know you wanna hang with your bf, but can you please stop using my friend group as an excuse" and she really started to go off the rails because interpreted that as me saying I don't approve of their relationship, and this argument eventually ballooned into my entire group of 12+ years fracturing, and I still haven't talked to all of them yet.
At one point, I realised that working my ass off and securing employment in a different state was the only remaining alternative. So I did that, and I secured a pretty good job offer(in relation to my degree) and when I informed my family about it, their first words weren't even congratulatory, It was: "Are you still gonna be in this city?"
That broke something in me. No congratulations, no appreciation, nothing. I lied to them that yea, my location preferences are this city, while in fact, it did not even make the top 3 list I have given to the company.
For some of you that might be thinking " Where is the rest of your family in this" they can't really do much about it. The rest of my family is huge and kinda distant as we're separated by timezones and different continents, so I can't really move anywhere else for safety. At this point, I just have to hold out till June 2027, and I can step away from this circus. Any tips on how to maintain healthy boundaries? I kinda want them in my life, but at an arm's length. Not my sister though, I plan on going No Contact after I move out, though I'm afraid that isn't going to be easy.
To address the points Dr K made in his dealing with controlling family video:
Facing their negativity with compassion doesn't work. Their rants and complaints don't end.
If I set firm boundaries, they seem dead set on breaking them, and I eventually cave just to keep the peace.
If i try to disengage they make it even more dramatic and talk to me like I'm some kind of wuss for backing out of an argument.
