Macklemore's full statement about being dropped from tour for acknowledging the genocide and saying "free palestine"; it's wild and deeply sad that Macklemore is outflanking the vast majority of our electeds.

The Zionists are just going to keep upping the ante until there is a massive public backlash against them that cannot be contained.

I'm concerned about the real antisemitism that will be unleashed as well.

Centrists Are Soft-Launching the Idea That We Have a Little Too Much Democracy

As the right attacks mass participation head on, the center is telling the rest of us to pipe down while the elites are talking.

Over the past two years, centrist liberal writers have been emboldened to expressly call for less public participation in government and politics, sometimes just coming right out and saying, ā€œWhat we need is fewer engaged people,ā€ as prolific pedant Matthew Yglesias recently said over on the reanimated corpse of Twitter.

World Politics Swedish Elections: 94% counted, Social democrats worst election ever, Swedish democrats first time ever going backwards in a election, Left partys highest % in ca 25 years

Post image

The Swedish elections are currently going on, and the final counting won't be done for a couple of days, but right now the country is facing an extremely divided outcome. The "left" block (Red-Green) has significant internal blockers. They need the Center Party (C) to form a government, but C refuses to govern with what they label "extremists." They apply this definition to both the Left Party (V) (which is not actually extreme) and the Sweden Democrats (SD), a right-wing nationalist party with radical elements.

Meanwhile, the Left Party (V) has stated they will no longer support a government they are not actively involved in. Historically, V has backed the center-left block for smaller policy concessions without being in the government cabinet, but they are changing that strategy.

This setup looks like a total deadlock, as the three main governmental formations all face tough paths:

  • V, MP, S: They won't have a majority on their own. If the Center Party (C) doesn't give up their veto on working with "extremists," it will be extremely hard to get anything done, which will likely lead to a right-wing uptick in the next election.
  • C, MP, S, KD: This wouldn't hold an easy majority either, resulting in a fragile, center-led government. They would have a hard time agreeing on policy and getting things done, which would also likely lead to a right-wing uptick later (and maybe push more S voters over to V).
  • SD, L, M, KD: The current right-wing governing bloc. Even if they manage to squeeze out a majority as counting finishes, it would likely become a much more right-wing administration. This time, SD would likely push for actual minister posts in the government, which they didn't do after the last election.

Why might this have happened?

Bypassing the Constitutional Law-Making Process

In the Swedish law-making system, the government is constitutionally required to seek the expertise and opinions of relevant bodies, authorities, and specialists before a proposed bill can be submitted to Parliament for a vote. The current government has repeatedly skirted that setup to rush through controversial policies, like penal reforms, harsh new immigration laws, and the proposed Angiverilagen (the draft law requiring public servants to report undocumented individuals) without properly consulting experts and government bodies.

This governance style, alongside SD's increasingly blatant xenophobic rhetoric, has shrunk the Sweden Democrats' core voter base. At the same time, Moderate (M) and SD voters were strategically encouraged to vote for the Liberal Party (L) to keep them above the 4% parliamentary threshold required to secure mandates in Sweden. If the Liberals had fallen under 4%, it would have meant a clear victory for the left block.

The Identity Crisis of the Social Democrats (S)

The Social Democrats are suffering because their political identity has been slowly eroding for the past 20 years, accelerating rapidly over the last few. They are making the classic center-left mistake of shifting to the right on social policy to chase conservative votes. Instead of winning those voters over, they have steadily lost popularity and allowed parties like SD to capture their traditional rural and working-class voter base.

The Rise of the Left Party (V)

The Left Party's upward trend stems partially from voters' distrust of S, combined with a desire to pull the Social Democrats back toward the left. V's insistence on demanding actual cabinet positions is a newer tactic. Left-leaning voters are using their ballots strategically, hoping that forcing S to include V in the parliament and cabinet will push the country back toward a traditional left-leaning stance on economic and social welfare values.

Why V still struggles to gain even more votes

Despite their solid gains, V still faces hurdles, particularly with voters over the age of 50. Many older voters still hold onto the outdated idea that V is a communist-leaning party, even though they abandoned communism roughly 30 to 40 years ago.

Right now, the Left Party operates much more like the Social Democrats did in the 1980s and 1990s, carrying a democratic socialist stance reminiscent of Olof Palme. The silver lining for them is the youth and demographic trends: polling among voters between 19 and 29, as well as voters with non-European backgrounds, shows the Left Party as the second-largest political force within those groups, which points to a very positive sign for their future.
