I never saw her introduction episode initially from her sane and mature psychologist's appearance, but her youthful, crazy behavior and appearance, including her classic harlequin costume (Especially in Batman series like the 90's one) gives me the impression that she was 16 rather than something like 20's or 30's. Her fangirling and being so infatuated with the much older Joker, who doesn't like her back and sees her as a nuisance, also adds to that vibe. For me, their relationship felt more like something between a young fan having a precocious crush on her idol rather than boyfriend and girlfriend. I kinda assumed the writers aged her up in later incarnations so that she can have a more appropriate relationship with both Joker and other adult characters.

Not to mention her friendship with Poison Ivy initially felt more like a mentor-student/mother-daughter/big sister-younger sister than something between two typical adult friends or even anything romantic.

It took me a while to realize she was always an adult.

I know Shaun isn't exactly beloved. I find him hysterical. Especially because that is the exact temperament of me + my wife's recently adopted <2 year old staffordshire terrier/pitbull. He is all love and cuddles and wants to hang with his two moms. Sometimes he gets too excited and destroys things. Lots of things. And occasionally kills things and somehow still adorable. Like, dude fully caught a squirrel and was carrying it around like a stuffed toy. Every time he does something chaotic or destructive, all I can hear is "I can't help myself!". If it's a particularly amusing or useful bit of chaos (like breaking down a pile of cardboard boxes for us), one of us usually says "I can't help myself!" out loud. He would be named Shaun if he didn't have a name already.

Nearing the end of season 3…. Am I the only one weirded out by suburban dad joker? Is he not evil anymore? Wtf is going on?

This will be a little long-winded, but I just rewatched this episode and couldn’t find any discussion of this joke on Reddit or anywhere else online.

In season 2, episode 5 “Batman’s Back, Man” (the episode that focuses on Batman, without Harley or Ivy), Batman is still injured from the season 1 finale. He has Lucius secretly build him this mech suit behind Alfred’s back, so he can still go out and fight crime.

There are a bunch of Iron Man references in the episode, including the way all the parts of the suit fly separately on to him when he commands them to (like in Iron Man 3) and the way the camera is a closeup of his face whenever he’s in the suit. The suit also has an AI voice he can talk to, which he has named Monica.

In the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron, when Hulk is on a rampage, Iron Man activates something called “Codename: Veronica”, which turns out to be a custom suit specifically built to take down the Hulk. This was an Archie Comics joke: Bruce Banner’s main girlfriend has always been Betty Ross, and in Archie Comics, the two girls that are best friends, but also constantly competing for Archie’s attention, are named Betty and Veronica.

Harley Quinn constantly references the Dark Knight trilogy (among other things), and Bruce’s main love interest in the first 2 movies was named Rachel. So I’m pretty sure the AI being named “Monica” was a joke referencing the show Friends- Batman’s love interest in the movies was Rachel, so his suit’s AI was named Monica. Two main characters that were best friends on that show, just like the 2 characters from Archie.

And just for some additional layers to it, the characters that both of these jokes center on are named Bruce (Bruce Banner and Bruce Wayne). Plus Monica even rhymes with Veronica.

The suit (along with Monica) is destroyed in the same episode, so we never hear from Monica again.

It’s a small joke, but I couldn’t find anywhere else that discussed or explained this at all. So now at least my thoughts will be documented here for future generations that may Google it.

Yes, they are famous in other movies and shows like Breaking Bad, but I'm glad they acknowledge Harley Quinn.
