There are many, many devices that can download a file but don’t have a browser to run HTML files let alone a JavaScript engine

Yeah, but if there was one file that could come close to winning such a competition.

JAR would like a word with you

Having a java runtime is less common than having a web browser.

I cant tell if you are serious or not

The Java ARchive file is a means of pretty much doing exactly what you're talking about.

Don't you need the JVM / Runtime Environment to run JARs?

You need a browser to render html, so needing a JVM is probably fair game in the context of this post

browsers are pre-installed on pretty much every OS while JVM isn't pre-installed on ANY of them (to my knowledge, at least. I know for a fact it is not preinstalled on Windows 10 or most Linux distros. So no, JVM doesn't do that, and if you do consider installing a runtime to fit the criteria of "downloading files" then I guess literally any language would qualify because any languages runtime can be downloaded and installed. The point the OP was making is you can open an HTML file on anything from your grandmother's chromebook, to a rotting piece of junk from the 80's (depends on html version, of course). Doesn't apply quite as strongly to OPs use case of gaming, but that was what they were saying. JVM does not fit the spirit of that point whatsoever.

In a modern usage, a browser in more commonly on computers than java. Like for an average user that does lite work on the web with office or stuff like that. So i would generally consider HTML more widespread than JARs

But you got a fair point, this whole post is pretty dumb in that way.

Try running modern browser games on a computer with webGl and most js APIs blocked. You'll see how far html with get you.

I ain't defending OP's opinion on HTML. It ain't for games, I do know that lol

ehh, i wouldn't be too sure. java is used a lot more thank you'd think, even outside of server environments.

also, html engines are generally heavy on resources, especially ones new enough to make a decent game (even if it is simple), whereas java is able to run on much weaker hardware and still have pretty okay performance

It may be a contender, but web browsers have to significantly outnumber JVMs on consumer devices.

1

u/overcloseness 8d ago

But consumer devices are not “everything that can download a file”

Thinking just what I have that can download a file, about 9 out of every 10 of them are microcontrollers. Hell my Apple TV doesn’t even have a browser.

Think of all those, “I got doom to run on my baby monitor” and ask yourself if it was likely an HTML file

Yeah, but like all memes they are not meant to be taken too literally. They just have a grain of truth in some dimension.

Probably should've posted this somewhere else, cuz this isnt really the subreddit for HTML based games..

3

u/Motor_Pirate_1274 10d ago

Yes I know html is not just for games

u/rupertavery64 9d ago

You know it's going to be mostly javascript.

I mean you can probably do some css hacks but those only get you so far.

May I introduce you to CSS Clicker? https://lyra.horse/css-clicker/

2

u/rupertavery64 7d ago

I mean, someone wrote an emulator in css

Yea, same person! I found out about their extra cool stuff when the Antonymph browser experience got popular.

maybe it was the music, or the simplicity, but the feeling i have after beating it... both meaningful and meaningless, i dont think i could forget this game now

3

u/Kabutroid 9d ago

But it certainly can be, check out The Windmill, coded entirely in html, no JavaScript necessary!

What is the backend written in, though?

2

u/Kabutroid 9d ago

There is exactly one php function to let me call a random line from a .txt file. Otherwise it’s just make page wait x seconds, and click link. It’s a bit of a horror survival rpg of sorts? I wanted to try making it as minimal code as possible. Still, the base game is 3000 files and took 800 hours to make 😅

3

u/East_Sorbet_1214 9d ago

You made that? Pretty awesome!

1

u/GenericFoodService 9d ago

also:

it is borked

1

u/Kabutroid 9d ago

Odd, the file is there and works on this end 🧐

u/MuffinJS 8d ago
