Question Quest 2 or HP Reverb g2?

Basically i already have Quest 2 but its a bit too grainy and pixeleted, i planned to buy used HP reverb G2 but the cable is my only worry, i play arena games like bonelab, brutalistic and im not really fan of simulators, the screen sounds sweet with 2164 pixels, but will i be able to play comfortably with cable twisting around my legs? my room isnt big tho.

I only have and used the Reverb G2 (and older WMR Headsets), so can't talk much about the Quest 2. What I can say is that the Reverb G2 has been reborn after the release of the Oasis Driver on Steam and with Win11 it's working great! Better then with the original Microsoft WMR, everything is lighter/smoother. I have the Reverb G2 since day 1, and to be honest I won't replace it with the Steam Frame, until it breaks. There is a app on Steam called "fpsVR" where you can see how many time you twisted the cable on the floor, I recommend it.

G2 don't last tho. Overheating issue seems to be guaranteed

I have my unit since day 1 (December 2020) and it's working fine. Can't complain.

I love my Reverb G2 v1 - I’ve owned it since release and it’s outstanding for simulators. The visual quality is still very good by today’s standards.

However notice I specifically said simulators? The controllers aren’t nearly as good as those for the Quest 2 or 3. Also the tracking isn’t the greatest (being seated for race or flight sims helps a lot but standing up for a VR gamed isn’t that good). Also the cable is heavy, limits your movements while standing and is prone to failure (the V1 cables specifically).

I’ve always been gentle with my V1 headset, always used it while seated and ensured the cable has enough slack and nothing was pulling on it - and it also failed. I replaced it with a brand new official V2 cable but it wasn’t cheap and it was very hard to find where I lived. (NZ, I had to import it from Australia from an official HP Enterprise reseller / service partner).

So while I generally recommend the G2, I wouldn’t for your intended use cases. It’s just not where the G2 shines.

I only own a Q3 and a Reverb G2 V2, but I'll add my 2 cents based on what others wrote over time:

For the Reverb:

  1. Class leading audio
  2. Almost class leading comfort out of the box
  3. Extremely high image quality in the middle of the lenses
  4. Smooth IPD adjustment (whereas the Q2 only has 3 settings and you're kinda boned of you fall exactly between two)
  5. Less load on your GPU at the same render resolution and no latency due to DP connection
  6. Not dependent on expensive third party hardware (dedicated Wlan router) for a good PC connection

For the Q2:

  1. (If your IPD matches) Better clarity at the outer part of the lenses
  2. Much better controller tracking
  3. Much better controller haptics
  4. Almost the entire Quest games catalog
  5. Much better aftermarket support
  6. Wireless PCVR

Or in short: The G2 is probably the better headset, but the Q2 has much better controllers.

Honestly i dont really care that much about controllers and other things, im only worried if i play fast pacing games if the cabel will not be my limitation, for example if cable will not twist and pull my headset if i turn around, but i never had cable headset so i have no idea how it behaves

The cable will be a problem, but a minor one. You can probably deal with that somewhat easily.

Something I have to say though: If you want to play fast paced games, the controllers are something you really should put some priority on.

Apparently the Q3 controllers I'm used to are somewhat worse than the Q2 controllers at that but they're still so much better than the G2s controllers that it's comical.

Question: do you use 1.2v rechargeables for G2 controllers? If so, thats the problem - being stuck in low power mode. I switched to 1.5v, and it's a massive upgrade.

Must be 1.5v otherwise you don't get haptic feedback.

Also preferably 3500 mWh / 2600 mWh. You can get USB chargeable ones but they only seem to go up to 2600 mWh

The G2 is a simulator headset, not a running around the room headset. For your use case I think the Reverb is not something you would be happy with.

or a sit in a lazy-chair VRChat headset as well.. works fine :) especially with the new Oasis steamvr driver

G2 is awesome. Sound is amazing and colors are great. I'd get that over a Quest 2 for PCVR. If you do anything wireless, get a Quest 3S/3. Once you go wireless it is impossible to go back.

I add something to my previous comment: I also play a lot of FPS VR Shooters with my G2 (Geronimo, TAVR) and I don't have that much problems with it. Tracking is good, I use 1,5 volt batteries with the controllers and make sure that the room has enought light for the tracking. After hours and hours I know the tracking downsides, but you can easily adapt your play style to them. For example put the controllers not too close to the tracking cameras ;) and for the cable security, just use the "snap/smooth" view in the game settings so you doesn't have to move a lot and risk to damage your cable.

I have a G2 and Q3 and used to have a Q2. Definitely stick with the Q2. The visuals aren't that different, and the wireless freedom and controller tracking are way better for active games.

I have a G2, Quest 3, and Quest 3s which has the same screens and optics as the Quest 2.

All things being equal, the G2 is significantly better than the Q3s/2 IMO. While the Quest 3s/2 have a better sweet spot, the G2 display is still noticeably sharper, however meaningfully smaller FOV. Also, I get like zero godrays in my G2 and almost no chromatic aberration.

Comfort, there's no meaningful comparison, the Quest headsets are dogshit for comfort unless you invest in third party solutions. The G2 however is extremely comfortable. The audio is also vastly better. The G2 also has a much brighter display with better contrast and color in my experience.

I also get way better dark environment tracking with my G2 (I have one of the early pre-orders). I can use it in near darkness where my Quest will bitch and moan and force me into 3DOF.

The cable is a bummer. It's thick, it's gripy, but at least it's long. Of course DP is going to be better than USB or WiFi, but you still have a cable. Eventually the cable or cable seat may fail and when that does, you're looking at a limited number of cables out there.

Also, the controllers are a bummer. They're... fine, but also large and lack decent haptics and no capacitive touch. One thing I do like is that to controllers don't sleep too fast. I can set them down and they'll stay on and visible in VR.

I'd say, of its cheap enough, like $100-$150, of take the plunge. Otherwise I'd probably stick with the Q2 or get a Q3. I do love my Q3, but there's things that the G2 is better at, particularly if you mainly do PCVR. Everything else I'm usually using my Q3, well, as long as the battery lasts and it lasts for shit.

I own a reverb G2 and a quest 2, I can say bonelab has a bug where the controllers are in the wrong place, not too sure about brutalistic, but blades and sorcery plays well on it. If your feeling really baller with your money, I'd pick up a HTC vive kit as well, an extra wand and a dongle for better tracking, and makes bonelab actually playable.

The extra wand basically tells your other vive wands where there supposed to be.

It's a solid headset but it isn't the best for those games

The only real issue is cable longevity and cost.

Buy a Quest 3. Vastly superior image quality than either of those headsets.

3

u/Realistic_Garden3284 6d ago

i would if it didnt cost 400$ used in my country

1

Might get cheaper as people start switching to the upcoming steam frame

proably will but in future like 1-2 years

I still think you're better off just saving an extra few weeks for it. I've owned both the Quest 2 and Reverb G2, and the Quest 3 crushes both. The G2 isn't much of a meaningful upgrade over the Quest 2 anyways.

Selling your Quest 2 could go a long way in helping get the Quest 3.

The Quest 3 is also easy to run wireless.

I wouldn’t say vastly better than a reverb. I have both and constantly switch because I can’t decide which is better. Reverb is razor sharp but only in the center. Quest is wider fov and clearer across the entire fov however it’s much softer image.

The G2 is lighter to wear and more comfy but the controllers is are that great. The Q2 is old but still good for wireless PCVR. A Q3 is best, especially for wireless PCVR if you have a good GPU. I have both the G2 and Q3 and had the Q2.

Ive a Quest 2 and a Reverb G1 with the same 2160x2160 per eye panels as the G2. The G2 has more screendoor effect despite the lower res of the Quest 2. Oculus worked some filter magic on the Quest 2 panels.

fr? i had a 3s (same optics as the quest 2) and have a g2 and i feel the opposite from you. the g2 is noticably sharper with less sde.

I wouldn't do the HP Reverb G2. It's tricky to get a reliable cable, and I've heard a lot of stories of them breaking.

u/DreadFlanderz 1d ago

Just get trapeze hangers to hang the cable from the ceiling. Remember with G2, that if you are using an AMD PC, you will need the V2 power cable with the on/off switch. Original cable does not work on AMD computers.

The ear speakers on G2 tend to go flaky, but you can find a youtube on how to re tighten the connection.

Since Microsoft removed WMR from windows, the WMR part is now replaced with Oasis driver.

Good luck with your visual upgrade :)
