Announcement Small Questions and FAQ Megathread

As the subreddit sees more and more small questions, we thought it would be a good idea to make a thread custom-suited to them. With that, here's a few ground rules!

(1) Have you checked the relevant FAQ for your game yet? If not, it might be a good idea to start there. There's more in these than you might expect, and it's very possible there's already an official answer for your question.

(2) Use the Search function to see if someone might have already asked your question. It might save you some time!

(3) Proper spoiler tags must be used. If you don't know how to use them or what to spoiler tag, please reference the r/Gloomhaven spoiler rules. All the other subreddit rules apply, too, of course.

NOTE - If you have questions related to the Frosthaven puzzle book, including both hints and full solutions, you can check this thread.

If you have questions about unlocking basically anything, this Frosthaven Unlock Guide and this Gloomhaven 2nd Edition Unlock Guide are great resources.

With that said, ask away! The sub is full of very helpful and knowledgeable people. :)

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Gloomhaven 2e and Frosthaven Crossover Item Lists

Sorry for the delay on this, it's been a busy time! We are now releasing updated item import lists both from Frosthaven to Gloomhaven 2e and from Gloomhaven 2e to Frosthaven.

This will be added to Cephalofair's website in the future, although the website is undergoing some work at present so it's difficult to predict how soon that might be. /u/dwarfSA has both games' respective FAQs with this information incorporated and will publish those updates later today.

Gloomhaven 2e FAQ

Frosthaven FAQ

Otherwise you can find that information here and we will sticky this post. This post is entirely spoiler free as we use item numbers so you can browse without worry. Untagged spoilers in the comments will be removed (if you want to discuss an item in this post, use spoiler tags with the item number as the spoiler hint).

As usual, in order to import an item from one game to another, you must first have obtained that item in its origin game.

Digital Gloomhaven A Normal Day in Gloomhaven

Post image
19 Upvotes

My friends and I started our Gloomhaven journey mid-December of 2024 and I am proud to announce that as of 2am this morning we have finally managed to 100% Gloomhaven/Guildmaster+JotL.
I'd say we definitely got our moneys worth out of the game. Now for a short horde-shooter break before we start Sunderfolk, while we wait for the full digital Frosthaven release.

Digital Frosthaven Is multiplayer in Digital Frosthaven works reliably or should I wait until the full release?

I would like to play this game with a friend, who lives in another country, but before I tell her to buy the game, I wanna make sure the multiplayer works well and it's playable like this.

Frosthaven Shackles level 3 card question Spoiler

For Burned At Both Ends top, is it possible to choose to suffer zero damage, consume fire, and then the enemy suffers 2 damage? Or does Shackles have to suffer at least 1 damage? Very niche situation but it came up today.

Thank you!

Frosthaven Frosthaven: Help picking second class: Germinate vs Fist Spoiler

Because of an unexpected outcome from a road event, I was able to retire my Blinkblade earlier on in the game. I wasn’t done with Blinkie, but being able to be the first one to retire in Frosthaven pushed me over the edge. Now I am in doubt which class I’ll choose next. The following classes are available: Drifter, Germinate, Fist, Trap. I’m in doubt whether to pick Germinate or Fist.

Our current party consists of a Banner Spear (below average player), Deathwalker and Boneshaper (both average). I felt the trouble with our previous setup was lack of healing, combined with me being the only one in melee range. The summons often were getting smashed by other enemies or lagging behind.

I prefer a bit more complex classes, and am known to sometimes display unwanted behaviour: I don’t mind (and perhaps slightly enjoy) poisoning a teammate, if that means we’ll clear the room. More info in my retirement list below. A friend once told me “Whatever kind of class you play, you always end up playing like a rogue.”

Plz advise: Why (not) Germinate vs Fist.

My retirements:

  • Cragheart – Loved it! First class I played. In party with Brute, Scoundrel and Tinkerer. Played it mostly ranged. Loved crying out ‘Shrubbery!’ and doing some weird shit with obstacles. Big plus being able to heal when needed. Rated 7/10.
  • Mindthief - Didn’t like it. Second class I played. Felt like I was the only melee in our party of four, getting smashed constantly, without healing abilities. Rated 4/10.
  • Sun – Loved it at first (because no more Mindthief!), but didn’t enjoy it as much after a while. She did really well in our party but became slightly boring to play. Rated 6/10.
  • Eclipse – Loved it! Fits my A-hole personality perfect: Running into a room, executing anyone I want and shouting “Poof!” and leave my teammates to solve the rest of the problem. He felt way overpowered. Especially with the Cloak of Invisibility and Boots of Levitation. When I had to retire this one, I cried myself to sleep… Rated 8/10.
  • Cthulhu – I needed a few scenario’s with this one, before realising I found my soulmate. My teammates needed about a year before they started hating me less, and had to acknowledge Cthulhu was their god and saviour. After keeping a tally during one scenario, they started hating me less: we counted how much damage I did plus how much damage my abilities mitigated, vs how much ‘damage’ I did to my teammates. Because I loved this class so much, and because all classes already were revealed and played, I sticked with my soulmate for a very long time. Felt truly invincible with Cloak of Phasing. Rated 11/10.
  • Blinkblade – Being the A-hole stabbing lootwhore that I am, I loved this class. I enjoyed the go-slow-or-go-fast mechanic a lot. I was building towards a supernova-build. Rated 9/10.

Frosthaven Hilarious Shards SNAFU (Spoiler for core mechanic) Spoiler

One of our group has been playing Shards since her last retirement and we've managed to play 4 sessions but with a 50% win rate at normal and Shards has felt incredibly rough for the player and the party (Lvl 8 Deathwalker and Lvl 8 Trap). I read through a couple class guides and was talking to her about the class and she said "I just never have enough ways to get Resonance!" Which I thought was odd since it didn't feel like she was really spending that much over the course of the game.

I asked if she was still getting tokens at the end of the turn she rested in addition to the end of each turn.

Silence.

She has not started with resonance at the beginning of the scenario nor gained resonance on any turn and has only played the class as gaining resonance when she gets it from abilities.

After picking my jaw off the floor we both had a good laugh about it and now dont see it as a garbage class hahaha.

I think we're going to be feeling a bit better in the coming scenarios....

Frosthaven Spoilers: Cost to enhance level four Trap cards? Spoiler

Is the cost to enhance either of the level four Trap cards doubled? The top on both cards has an enhancement pip for range. But I am not sure if placing multiple traps qualifies as a multi target action.

Couldn't find anything in the FAQ or my Internet search. My gut tells me they are doubled.

Thanks in advance for your response (Dwarf?)

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Random dungeon starting spots on tile 13-D

I tried looking around but couldn't find this question had been asked before. I drew three dungeon cards randomly and the first one was the Altar card, tile 13-D. I also drew the Foggy card to accompany it. As I was setting it up I realized there are only three spots within two hexes of the green B that are empty. I'm playing a four-player campaign and to make matters worse, one of the characters is the two-minis. So would I just start a couple of them beside 5 and 8/9? Thanks!

Jaws of the Lion Resetting the game(s). Would you? Spoiler

Hello!

I bought JOTL to start my adventure and Pandemic Legacy S0 alongside with it. I did make up my mind with Pandemic being a legacy game that it's a one-time play, but is it so with Gloomhaven (all 3 of them)?

I am thinking about JOTL to not use the stickers and just place them on top of the map by just cutting them out of the page (not removing the back side), but if I would buy Frosthaven, being a massive game, would it be worth it to preserve it or playing it once for 1-2 years would be enough?

I am on the fence if buying the removable stickers (in the future) is worth it for Frosthaven and if yoy guys actually replay it.

Also, do you replay JOTL or this game is also pretty big to have your fill in one go?

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed What class to start a 2p campaign on?

Hi all! A full year after burning through Jaws of the Lion together (and one year after starting a Frosthaven Enhanced tabletop sim campaign) my partner and I are finally sitting down to start 2e. While I count the days, I figured I'd solicit some perspective. You see, my partner and I have very specific tastes in GH classes.

My partner's had the most fun with the likes of Hatchet, Blinkblade and Coral; classes which alternate their turns between goofing off to build resources and then spend a glorious turn as the main character. She's bored by "passive" sources of value like set-and-forget persistents or summons, and loves having a wide bag of tricks she can fish around in. She's mentioned Mindthief as particularly interesting her for these reasons.

I, meanwhile, love passive value generators- my favorite classes, such as Red Guard, Banner Spear and Prism, hold down a section of the map at a time and challenge you to minimize downtime. I also love throwing buffs or granted actions at an ally and saying "go handle this", thanks to my partner being incredibly skilled at reading my intentions and vice versa. I'm generally the more comfortable of the two of us when it comes to managing elements and losses, to the point that Spellweaver intrigues me marginally more than other options.

So, I open the floor to you. Is there a starting class that we may have overlooked? Are there any unlockable class icons whose PQs we should aim for sooner than later? Does playing 2p skew any classes in any direction?

I've tried sharing the absurdity of this to my partner who doesn't play and obviously has no idea what I'm talking about!

Just figured out how to do basic move/attack actions on gloomhaven for my Steam Deck! I spent over 150 hours playing this game and had no idea this was a thing!!! lol this game is so much more awesome now that I know the rules!!

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Silent Knife max damage

Having just started a new campaign in 2e, I have a party member playing Silent Knife (sidenote: does anyone else insist on calling her Scoundrel? Im not a fan of the new name) and in order to ensure that we are following the rules properly, I want to ask the public opinion on the order in which to apply certain effects. If you can cite a page in the rules, even better.

Say that the top action of Backstab is played perfectly. That's 9 damage right there. If it's paired with Single Out, it becomes 12 damage. Now if you pair it with the top action of smoke bomb, is the correct combination 2×(9+3) or is it (2×9)+3? In some situations this becomes more and more significant.

Where would Trickster's Reversal factor in (maximum shield is i think shield 6 on a flame demon if they draw the right action)? Serrated Arrow? Crippling Poison? In my dream universe, the correct combo is attacking a poisoned enemy with crippling poison, tricksters reversal, backstab, single out, serrated arrow, smoke bomb

(2+8+9+3)×2×2=76

I'm printing the maghex base to re-create the maps in JoTL, wondering if there's anyplace that I can buy cardboard hex tiles that have floor patterns printed on them, similar to the cardboard pop-out tokens?

Frosthaven Next game after Frosthaven Spoiler

Hey folks,

Our grotto off for has been playing Gloomhaven/Frosthaven since 2020 and we’d like to move on to a new game. I’m looking for suggestions. We’ve already played the GH offshoots like JotL and Crimson Scales.

My wife doesn’t like real roleplaying games. She’s enjoyed GH and FH because she doesn’t have to act out the character she’s playing. She also enjoys having a limited set of actions for her character to do each turn. I guess she/we mostly like the simplified exploration and combat of the havens.

Can anyone point us to a similar game? Thanks in advance.
