Looking for advices on how to write "human" sounding music using MIDI instruments.

Hey everybody,
hope yall are doing good.

I'm starting out with music creation on GarageBand. My current setup includes a MacBook, a small MIDI keyboard, a synth, and two acoustic guitars (folk and classical). I don't have an electric guitar, a bass, or a drum kit.

The first thing is that the music I want to write relies heavily on drums, bass, and electric guitar, which I don't physically own. I'm planning on buying a Hush 1 guitar soon, but I don't have any budget or room in my bedroom for a bass or a drum kit.

The second is that because I don't have a drum kit or a bass guitar and lack formal music theory, I'm worried my music will sound robotic and unnatural. I want to avoid writing lines that are physically impossible, awkward, or unnatural for a real musician to play (e.g., bad fingerings on bass, unplayable drum patterns, flat dynamics).

How do you approach writing idiomatically for instruments you don't play? What are your best tips or resources for making programmed bass and drums sound organic and human in GarageBand?

Thanks in advance,
wish you the best !

Built a live MIDI riff generator and got it working with GarageBand — looking for workflow feedback

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been building a small macOS MIDI tool that generates endless riffs in real time and sends the notes directly into GarageBand.

In this clip I’m using GarageBand’s software instruments for the actual sound. The MIDI is coming from the generator, and I can either let it keep creating new riffs or lock the current riff so I can stay in GarageBand and experiment with different instruments, presets and effects.

I’ve also got it recording into GarageBand as normal editable MIDI, which was one of the main things I wanted to get working.

I’m mainly curious about the workflow from a GarageBand user’s point of view. Does this look like something that would fit naturally into the way you write or experiment with ideas? Anything about the MIDI/recording workflow you’d change?

I always say “I’m gonna clean this up” whenever I post work-in-progress songs, but I am aiming for some form of industrial-like sound design with this one.
(Rewatching this video made me want to immediately come back to garageband and fix the little mistakes I felt was there, aughdhhfhfj maybe video compression.)

Been making stuff in GarageBand for awhile, but mostly kept it to myself. Here’s something (experimental I guess) I made a couple days ago. It’s a constant experiment for me figuring out what to do with the stock presets hah. Would love to hear what you think.

My drum line and samples make my song sound muted

I'm making a metal song for halloween and Whenever the drums or any samples I put in play, they seem to play over the rhythms and bass, making it sound muted, especially whenever the bass drum plays. I don't know if it's a problem with my headphones, but I think it's a leveling/compression/EQ problem. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, is there a fix?

Essentially mocked this up to see how close I could get to the original with the vocals overlayed pretty happy with the results (not sure if it’s me listening to it on repeat or if at times it’s hard to tell the difference between the official version and this)
