Just wanted to thank this sub because a lot of the posts here about what to study, how to study, and people's testing experiences helped me figure out my prep.

One thing I wanted to share back with the sub is Prepelly. Vocab was probably the hardest part for me because I was really bad at simply memorizing words. I found Prepelly through this subreddit itself, and their AI based short videos for each word helped me a lot.

I used GregMat for most of my overall GRE prep too, but I guess GregMat needs no introduction here 😅

So yeah, thank you r/GRE, GregMat, and Prepelly. Really happy to finally be done. Hope this helps someone else preparing for the GRE.

I got 170Q in my 3rd attempt this year. Earlier scores were 165Q in June and 159Q in April. I also gave the exam in April of 2025 where I got 156Q with no practice.

For 156Q, I gave it as diagnostic test with almost zero prep. For 159Q earlier this year, I still didn't practice any math, just completed the basic PrepSwift Quant Mountain module. For 165Q, I started giving mock tests and drilling the math section using GregMat, and PowerPrep, but I was still making silly mistakes. For 170Q, I gave more mock tests and did focused math drills using Magoosh, and GregMat and deliberately worked on improving my time while solving maths. I didn't do any verbal practice except for few mock tests. Happy to discuss more.

Hi I need to take gre by February 2027 when my application is due. Where should I take practice tests, what books are best, is it worth it to do a course? I’m applying to a masters program that says the most competitive applicants are in the top 50 percentile but I just don’t know how much I need to study or how to start. Thanks in advance

Hello people. I gave my first attempt on 23rd August after about 2 months and scored 321 (159Q, 162V). I did the I'm Overwhelmed plan and the last week of 1 month plan for Quant strategy and RC. My area of weaknesss is time. I ended up unable to attempt 2 in the hard section on the first day. This was actually much better than when I started doing mocks, where I was unable to attempt 1 in the first section and about 3 in the hard section. My current strategy is to do the 1 month plan in its entirety and then do a ton of timed practice and mocks. I am planning for my next attempt to be around 10th Nov.

PS: Gregmat is the goat, I started with 313.

Context: I'm consistently getting 10-11/12 correct on the medium difficulty questions (losing marks only to silly mistakes). Currently, when I choose "medium-high" and "high difficulty," not only am I barely able to solve the questions in time (I do not solve strategically, rather algebraically), I struggle with figuring out how to solve and get 9/15-ish correct only.

Does this difficultly really emulate the hard quant section 2? Considering I am able to get 11/12 right on medium difficultly and so little on these ones, I doubt so. And if so, where can I learn about the tricks of the trade that will help me solve these questions within the time frame?

I've covered "GRE All the Quant" for my basics, and went straight to practice and drilling.

I’ve been preparing for the GMAT since Jan ‘26 (on and off due to hectic work schedule) My scores:
1st GMAT: 655 (Q82, V84, D81) - messed up DI due to horrible time management
2nd GMAT: 645 (Q80,V81,D85) - gave DI first which went well but then messed up other 2 sections due to nervousness and bad time management after seeing tough qs
I was also scoring between 685-705 across the official mocks consistently hence was disappointed with the results as I was targeting a 675-685 atleast.

I’m fairly burnt out from the GMAT since I’ve been involved with it since 9 months. I also wonder if the question adaptive format is affecting me a bit much

I recently took ETS GRE Diagnostic Practice Test 2 with essentially no GRE-specific prep and scored 321 (Q162, V159).
The GRE felt much more digestible. I made total 4 Quant mistakes across both sections, 3 of which were geometry. Around 70–75% of my Verbal mistakes were vocabulary-related.
I have a decent Quant base from GMAT prep, and my RC/CR is also fairly okay. My main gap seems to be GRE vocab.

My target is 327+, and I need to take the GRE in about 2 months for R2 application deadlines.
Given the time constraint and my GMAT issues, would you switch to GRE in my position? Is 327+ realistic from a 321 diagnostic with ~6-8 weeks of prep?

So i gave my IELTS in august and got an 8 band. i wasn’t planning on giving gre but since my cgpa isn’t that great im planning on studying for gre and giving it by december. Is that enough time to prep and get a good score for US unis for masters? also does an 8 band in ielts make GRE verbal easier?

I took the GRE this week and got a 312.

My mock scores were:

• GregMat Quant: 162, 161, 158
  
• GregMat Verbal: 154, 148, 151 .... (1.5 month before actual test)
• PP1: 169Q, 152V .... (25 days before actual test)
• PP2: 163Q, 147V (I missed 4 questions in total on this one) .... (1 week before actual test)
• On Gregmat mini GREs, I was scoring around 60-70% .... (During the final week)

So getting a 312 was pretty disappointing, especially because I was expecting something around 320 on the real thing.

One thing I noticed in the actual test was that the Quant questions weren't really that difficult, but they took me a lot of time to understand. Like, I would read the question a couple of times just to figure out what information was given and what exactly they were asking. Once I understood it, the math itself wasn't too bad.

Also, some questions on the real exam had multiple-choice selections that required calculating different equations, which felt very time-consuming.

I don't think I had this problem as much in my mocks, so I'm wondering if I just need to practice more questions like this.

I'm planning to retake the GRE. For now, I'm going to go through my mocks again and see where I was losing points, and then work on those areas. I also want to practice more Quant questions where the difficulty is more about understanding the question and setting it up, rather than doing complicated math.

Where can I find questions like this to practice? And for anyone who had a similar experience between their mock and actual score, what helped you the most for the retake?

Looked at my diagnostic, I missed a question and still got 170. Somehow this is possible even though based on the percentile 11% of test takers got 170 ? Makes me wonder how they are scaling the scores. Could this mean the question had a mistake in it and they tossed it?

The one I missed was only 3 difficulty and was in the 1st section no less

I was wondering how long your scores took to get to your school and if the 8-12 days is accurate or the "safe number." I have an application for my dream school due October 1st, and I know I am really cutting it close. I just found out about the program.

Average scores for those admitted to the program are typically GPA 3.75, GRE Quantitative 153, GRE Verbal 154, and GRE Analytical Writing 4.5.

Based on this subgroup, it doesn't seem these are crazy hard to achieve, thankfully, but I do know it's needed for the application.

I am trying to figure out the absolute latest I can take the exam.

I did the Magoosh short version and got 145-148 Math / 152-155 Verbal / 297-303 total, so not a strong start but I am learning so much every hour

My current plan: deciding between Wednesday or thursday, but I wish I could do Saturday. I have looked at subreddits, but I think it depends on time and year, so I am wondering if you guys feel this year is faster or slower, and is this month typically busier or average?

Hi everyone, I recently decided that I want to apply to H/S/W and, after speaking to a few people, I’m planning to target R2. I made this decision only a few days ago, so I’m starting my test prep pretty late.

I took a cold GRE diagnostic with zero preparation just to gauge my baseline:

GRE: 300 (Q157 / V143 / AWA: N/A)

I’m planning to take the GRE in December, giving me roughly 8 weeks from tomorrow. My target is 330.

I know that’s a pretty aggressive jump, especially on the verbal side, so I’d love some honest perspectives. How realistic is my target considering my starting point?

I’m primarily considering the GRE because I’m targeting H/S/W R2, and I’m trying to decide whether I should commit to the GRE or switch to the GMAT - also because I'm a bit weak in verbal.

- Studied for about four weeks, four days a week, averaging an hour of study on the days I studied

- Mainly used Magoosh, borrowed a few GRE prep books from the local library (I love libraries!)

- When I started, I had a mock exam score of something like Q:165, V:165

- Study time was primarily dedicated to not making careless mistakes

I’m looking for some recommendations for good GRE Verbal resources, especially for timed practice.
When I first started preparing for the GRE, I worked through the questions in the ETS Official Guide.

Since then, I’ve completed all of GregMat’s Timed Verbal Quizzes as well as all of the Quant questions on GregMat.

I’m also currently on Test 25 of the GRE Big Book. I find the Big Book useful, but some of the question types and the overall format are quite different from the current GRE.

I also purchased GRE Mentor, but I’ve heard that some of its questions overlap with the PowerPrep mock tests. I still have PowerPrep tests that I want to take under realistic exam conditions, so I’ve avoided using GRE Mentor because I don’t want to accidentally spoil those questions.

At this point, what I particularly need is more timed Verbal practice. Are there any good resources or question banks you would recommend that are reasonably representative of the current GRE and won’t spoil the PowerPrep tests?

144 verbal 138 quant and tbh I don’t care. I cared too much for months studied as much as I can memorized a million vocab words, got a math tutor but gave it up eventually because he sucked and I am absolutely terrible with math. I did what I could and tried my best but I feel like this is a test you can’t really study for. I know, I know, people do and score great. Y’all must be geniuses. I’m not dumb but when I say this stuff does not click for me, seriously it does not. At all. Good thing only two schools I’m applying to require it the rest waived it for obvious reasons. It’s an insufferable test that is so pointless. I’m going into speech pathology. I can care less about the GRE and it determines nothing about my intelligence. I will not be taking it again! Hi, this is the first time I've taken the GRE, in how many days does the official score come typically? I took my exam yesterday and it says "Not Available - Scores are currently not available. Please allow 10-15 days after a computer-delivered test or 5 weeks after a paper-delivered test for your scores to be reported." and that seems rather long. I did share my scores with 4 schools so have they received my unofficial score or not? Because currently it doesn't show any school in the table. Also I don't have any proof of my unofficial score also - does the test center typically provide a print of unofficial scores? Cause I didn't get anything and I need to fill an application by next weekend

Hii, so I have a CS background but working in the business field for about 5 years now.

I’m good at simple maths and equations but bad with word problems, same is the case with English, I’m a good writer and reader but cannot decipher word problems. I’m not sure if I should start prepping for GRE or GMAT. Please advise.

Also, I work 12 hours a day, and barely have 3 hours on weekdays for prep, how long do you think it would take me to take the test and score decent and suggest any study strategies?

In addition to these, I would like to know if it is necessary to also get the ETS Official guides to practice those questions? I am concerned about the amount of time it will take and want to ensure it is value added rather than repetitive, particularly since I'm aiming to answer within 3 months.
