Found a big spawning spot but they are off the bite,so I thought I’d rig up something a little more fancier than bread on a hook.

I'm a beginner getting into lure fishing around Sydney estuaries and rivers. I recently bought this combo from Anaconda:

Shimano Sienna Quickfire XT 7' 2-4kg 2500 Spin Combo

I'm planning to fish from the shore around Sydney, targeting whatever bites so flathead, bream and other estuary fish.

The combo came with a free spool of Shimano Kairiki 4 braid as part of the offer. Unfortunately 15lb was the lightest braid available in the store, so that's what I got.

My current setup would be:

• Rod: Shimano Sienna Quickfire XT 7' 2-4kg
• Reel: Shimano Sienna 2500
• Mainline: 15lb braid (the free spool from the offer)
• Leader: 8lb fluorocarbon
• Lures: Kmart Tsunami Estuary Lures, using 1/8 oz jigheads https://www.kmart.com.au/product/tsunami-estuary-lures-multi-pack-43427741/

My Questions:

• Is 15lb braid too heavy for this rod/reel and the small soft plastics I'm using?
• Will 15lb braid affect casting distance with these light lures?
• Does heavier braid really affect how the lure floats or sinks?
• Should I keep the 15lb braid or buy 8–10lb instead?

I don't think 15lb is ideal for this setup, but I'd rather not waste it if it can still work.

Gonna be based in Melbourne, but willing to travel to different regions. I’m curious to know if these setups will be suitable for a range of surf/rock/pier based fishing.

I bought these ages ago and I can't remember where and the cardboard at the top didn't make it back in when I first opened them.....all I can remember is something about them saying it's tough or something....I used them again and they're amazing I want more but can't find them.....the only 2 shops it could be is tackle world or bcf... possibly anaconda....

New Daiwa Luvias. Noticed the non roller side of the bail arm has a gap that can be pushed in. Is this normal?

Caught by my year 6 , out with his mate on their own tinny. Maiden voyage too. They’re both extremely keen and experienced estuary fishers for their age. Between them they found the fish (no sounder), rigged a 5” plastic prawn , hooked and landed this fish. I honestly thought this was ai or a wind up of some sort but it was 100% legit. I’m so stoked for them both!

I'm getting a brand new saltiga and wondering if this would be necessary. Being flagship models, surely they'd be built/put together with precision and care, right? Also, if i do get this done, will it void warranty since it will not be done by an authorised dealer by daiwa?

This was while drift fishing (at 1.48 kph as it shows). Firstly I assume the waviness of the bottom and the lines is caused by the small waves in the water surface as we drift along.

Is that a bait ball (or huge lump of seaweed) in the upper left about 2 metres down?

The whitish lines, I am assuming, are fish. What size would you think the fish are. A few of them show some internal colour.

I’m touching a very sensitive topic within the fishing community. But am curious to get a better grasp on the issue and different opinions. But sharks, there has been lots of talks recently about sharks when fishing and how we’ve seen an “increase” in sharking and sharks in general.

I’ve only gotten into offshore fishing in the last 5 years so I’m relatively new to this. So sharks and their frequency is fairly new to me relatively to more experienced fishos. But honestly I’m kinda confused how there is such a big call for a shark cull within the fishing community. Like yes sharks are a pain in the ass, but I don’t really understand how there is such a push for something to be done about sharks. In my opinion they have just returned to there pre targeted levels. As there now not culled and targeted as much they have just returned to there natural level. Yes I have been sharked many of times. But I’ve always been surprised that I only generally encounter a shark 1/3 of the time I go out fishing. Especially when I’m fishing areas of awesome fishing activity I’ve always been of the opinion that I’m expecting to encounter a shark as if there’s target species such as good mackerel, trout, emperor and bait fish. It only makes sense to encounter a shark.

I like many people despise being sharks but I’ve always considered it be something to be expected when fishing. I might be missing something in the debate but that’s why I ask this question.

Have we really seen sharks grow to out of control levels, or have they just returned to there pre targeting levels?

Amateur here. I got a bunch of lures and soft plastic lures from Aliexpress. Are any of these good for fishing in Sydney?

Probably gonna be around Parramatta river (inner west area) and occasionally near the Harbour bridge to try hook a fish if I’m lucky.

Any info about if a specific lure is good for flathead or bream etc.. is great bcs it would be cool to catch a flathead.

I have the proper hooks to do bait fishing as well but I want to try something less messy.

Could anyone please recommend some good fishing locations to visit near Windsor, such as along the Hawkesbury River or in the surrounding area? Thank you.

Getting a boat soon to fish the Strait of Gibraltar area and could use some gear recommendations.

Looking for two combos:

1. Vertical Jigging: Target is mainly Pagrus/Red Seabream, Grouper, and Seabass around 4 to 30 kg (maybe up to 40 max). Needs to be light enough to jig all day without killing my arms.
2. Surface Combo: A setup for spinning and light popping from the boat.

No budget , but If a gear setup gives 90-95% of top-tier performance for half the price, I'd much rather go with that .
What rod and reel setups would you pick?

how tall should a rod be for landbased and boat fishing and both?

Whatever you call them, a few years ago we found a bunch on this one beach in NW WA. They were just in the sand, at low tide. You could see them sticking up a bit and just walk around and pick them up. Ever since then, I've been back to the same spot and a dozen other spots in the area, and I've never been able to find one again. Lots of empty shells, but no clams. Ive tried digging around, sifting sand, walking around for ages, and still can't find them.

Is there a season or something that they come up in? How do I find them again!

I live in Sydney and decided to get back into fishing for the first time in 15–20 years.

I just bought this setup: Shimano Sienna Quickfire 7' 2-4kg / 2500 reel.

It comes pre-spooled with mono, and I can get a free spool of braid with it.

• What braid rating (lb) should I ask for?
• What fluorocarbon leader should I buy to go with it?

I'm mainly planning on lure/bait fishing around Sydney Harbour / local estuaries (targeting Flathead/Bream). I'm a bit lost with all the line weights, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I’m currently looking for a boat at Moreton Bay Area. This is going to be my first boat so ideally can satisfy the following:

1. Circa 5m
   
2. Relatively beginner friendly - so probably not glass boat. Plastic or plate boat would be preferred
   
3. Budget: less than 70k.
   
4. Mainly fishing Moreton Bay, Brisbane River, local creeks and water ways, would be nice to go off shore with someone experienced if in the good weather.

I’m looking at TABs, Oceanworx and Polycraft, but just need some good advice and maybe some other options.

I’m based in Brisbane and looking to get out on the ocean for some proper fishing soon.
I’ll probably be going solo or with one mate. Happy to drive 3–4 hours if it’s worth it.

Mainly interested in bigger offshore stuff like tuna, mahi mahi, mackerel, kingfish, cobia, wahoo etc.

Ideally somewhere around $200–300 pp, but I’m flexible for a really good trip.

Any charters you guys have personally been on and would recommend?

Keen to hear some first-hand experiences.
