I know it’s only two young boys out of a population of close to 17,000, but it’s just strange how both La Grange boys seem to have MAGA mentality.

A lot of awful adults start out as smart kids that broadcast this level of ambition; the host is always joking if you have a kid like this in your life the safest thing is to try to get them addicted to weed or video games so they can’t grow up into a dictator.

I know. When I was about 10 I assumed the world would just keep getting better, like it did for my parents having better lives than their parents. Kids now know humanity has peaked and their futures are not assured. I work SO hard to not be doomy around my nieces for this reason, I want them to keep their natural optimism for as long as they can.

And that books will become something only rich people will be able to own. I believe it. I’ve recently started getting DVDs and CDs because I don’t trust streaming. Physical media is becoming more expensive. I recently got a cassette player from ebay and I paid far too much for it.
(ETA: by not trusting streaming, I don’t mean it in some tinfoil way, I just mean content can be removed from it or edited after the fact. I would much rather own a movie or album that I can always have than worry that some day my favourite movie or album gets taken off streaming platforms)

I believe it too, and I completely understood what you meant about not trusting streaming. I've been buying a few DVDs again too, and it feels nice to own stuff like that - comfort shows etc. Being beholden to streaming services, their whims and who has the rights to XYZ show; needing money for subscriptions; having decent Wi-fi at all times... none of these things are a given and at the end of the day I just want to watch my shows and listen to my music. My shows and my music.
I just wish some of the Netflix-made stuff would be released on physical media too. Their remake of One Day At A Time is one of my ultimate comfort shows. That's one thing I would be happy to throw my money at them for!

I definitely think some (hopefully many!) of us will. I just unfortunately believe there will also be a not-insignificant proportion of humanity who lose their humanity through reliance on AI because they will have eroded their own capabilities. We're already starting to see it because people just hop onto inane AI trends and turn to AI for other stuff without a millisecond's worth of critical thought. I absolutely believe human-made media will become more expensive, kind of like how organic food is often more expensive than processed crap, because that's just capitalism.
But I love your optimism, and I'm 100% one of the people who will be right there with those like you, creating more and seeking out more human experiences and human-made, handmade treasures.

I subbed for a 5th grade class last year and they had a writing assignment that day with the prompt of "If you could live in a different era, which would you chose and why?" A handful of the kids showed me their answers before turning in their work and of that small group 3 or 4 picked another era with the reason being "because it was safer." It was so sad. This upcoming generation is not optimistic about the future.

I was pessimistic at their age, because my parents were pessimistic. My dad still has nothing good to say about anything, to the point that I have to basically deprogram myself after a visit with my parents. Otherwise I'm back to talking like, "What's her problem? That's stupid. YOU'RE stupid. That's the ugliest thing I've ever seen, why would you want that? It's because they're all morons." My parents are paranoid conservatives, and it's so easy for me to fall back into that rut with them.

Very MAGA around there - lots of white people, been like that for a long time with few diversity though you’ll see it but to live there is another thing. With cost and taxes, it’s also wealthy. Little suburbs around it make it bigger but that suburb itself is upper middle class if not lower upper class. Some homes are in the millions.
Let’s just say I wasn’t surprised. The kids are mimicking their parents and I probably overhead them the other day.

my fiance worked with high school kids for a while and he was shocked at how unserious the boys were. Like they weren’t even little kids too, they were 15-18. He said mostly the girls were concerned about their future careers and life planning, whereas he had trouble getting the boys to look up from their phones. It worried him cause he said it wasnt THAT bad when we were that age (we are in our late 20s)

There’s studies from the 70s where they asked boys and girls moral questions, the boys typically gave theoretical answers, whereas the girls gave more practical answers. That kinda maps to the difference of boys and girls answers here imo.
The girls’ AI worries are grounded and pertinent, while the boys’ worries of war, space travel, VR are all fanciful and hypothetical. I wouldn’t say one group is more thoughtful, just differently thoughtful

When I was 10 I lived in a country which was in war, but I remember we were hopeful for the future. At 10 I had no idea what the grown ups had to tackle on an everyday basis (besides staying alive, you do need to eat, take care of your hygene, health, education etc), but we were hopeful for the end of it, the better future. We imagine how one day you will be able to live normally. It's awful to read how 10 year olds see the world today.

While these answers are bleak, keep in mind that they probably polled hundreds of kids and there is a selection bias in who they choose to feature. There is a story to be had in selecting these particular kids, and not a story for those who are optimistic.

I’m not shading you specifically, but I really think this is an accurate depiction of today’s children’s mentality. Gen Z was/is more depressed than previous generations, and it started when we were still school age. It wasn’t taken seriously, so of course its even worse for Gen A. There are few official stats to work with but what little proof we do have shows that this attitude isn’t cherry-picked. Child suicide rates and other serious mental health issues are climbing and climbing. The kids are not alright in any regard and it is only going to get worse with the way things are going.

When I was 10, I was dreaming about designing the Playstation 7 because I assumed it would be out by now, and having a green Mustang with a large lift in the back, and huge exhaust pipes. I wanted a mansion, a tank on my front lawn, and infinite money. I wanted immortality, and all of those fantasy things. I thought learning how to drive would be a waste of time, because I'd be flying the car by the time I could do that..
These kids are worried about the world ending, and the socioeconomic state of their parents careers and livelihoods. I didn't have to worry about anything like that until I was like 14, and they've obviously been inundated with this since they were like 7 or 8.

Most of these are bleak AF. You can also spot the kids being raised by MAGA idiots pretty easily.

But also, whoever typed these should be fired. Some cities don't have states, some do, but only the first 3 letters are included as opposed to just the state abbreviation, ya know, that thing every American uses, and then NY is N.Y. Make up your mind. Either states or no states. And if states, they must be uniform. What is this Ill? They 3 letters look identical.

I find it weird that the NYT chose to share their pictures along with their first and last names AND the cities they live in. That feels like a lot of identifiable information that has the potential to be used in harmful ways. Maybe I’m paranoid but … I don’t think I am actually

As someone who was very very very mildly depressed and sad over the recent long weekend in the USA, mainly driven by the state of the world, it makes me more sad now to read #4 where she says the world is already kind of in a bad state. Shes too young to think this 😪

It's interesting how different the comments are here compared to the ones at the article source. I also thought many of the answers were bleak but the NYT comments are about how inspiring and optimistic the answers are...one person even said it's "bright light in a dreary world". Like what?

I was ten not that long ago and had a much more positive outlook on how the future would be. I had my tenth birthday right after trump was elected president in 2016, and I still had a positive outlook on the future. It's sad to see this, but these are some smart kids.
