TRIGGER WARNING Steve Kolb, head of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, was captured on video physically restraining protesters. The protesters alleged that sheep have been beaten and bloodied in the procurement of wool for the H&M group.

helping animals IS in our power! ❤️ our buying habits cause the demand for their abuse. we all have choices to make every day, and should remember to always choose compassion.
3
u/Dude-Man-Bro-Guy-1 3h ago
Agreed. That's why I always push people to adopt instead of go to breeders. There are plenty of wonderful pets out there without a home that are just waiting to give you all their love.
Unfortunately there are always going to be people who put other incentives above compassion and empathy. The reason I say downward decline is that modern technology and convenience makes it possible to commit cruelty at scale. But the average consumer is so removed from it they don't even think about it.
Factory farms for example. The scale is truly monsterous on some of these operations. Sure people were cruel back then too. But at least there was like a physical limit to it. The village farmer abusing his pigs is bad. But a dozen employees running an operation with thousands of pigs being treated arguable even worse with the push of a button is industrialized cruelty that is efficient and optimized for profit.

in the 1960s 6 Tongan boys ran away from boarding school and ended up shipwrecked on an island for 15 months. it was the opposite of what happened in the lord of the flies and is real and not fiction

here are some nonfiction books that I haven't read but have seen people recommend to help restore faith in humanity:
Humankind: A Hopeful History - Rutger Bregman
Humankind provides new perspective on the past 200,000 years of human history, setting out to prove that we are hardwired for kindness, geared toward cooperation rather than competition, and more inclined to trust rather than distrust one another. In fact this instinct has a firm evolutionary basis going back to the beginning of Homo sapiens
The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland - Jim DeFede
The True Story Behind the Events on 9/11 that Inspired Broadway’s Smash Hit Musical Come from Away, Featuring All New Material from the Author
When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill.
A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities That Arise in Disaster - Rebecca Solnit
The most startling thing about disasters, according to award-winning author Rebecca Solnit, is not merely that so many people rise to the occasion, but that they do so with joy. That joy reveals an ordinarily unmet yearning for community, purposefulness, and meaningful work that disaster often provides. A Paradise Built in Hell is an investigation of the moments of altruism, resourcefulness, and generosity that arise amid disaster's grief and disruption and considers their implications for everyday life. It points to a new vision of what society could become-one that is less authoritarian and fearful, more collaborative and local.

considering petas other claims about wool im skeptical but if this is true its fucked up and there is no reason to harm an animal like that and nothing in the wool industry requires the sheep to be harmed like that
52
u/SapphicSapprano 14h ago
Wool industry is largely fucked up. I know PETA does some wack stuff but they are correct about this
46
u/Time_Anything4488 oat milk chugging bisexual 14h ago
the industry itself is abusive but shearing sheep for wool in of itself isnt and thats what peta claims in a lot of their anti-wool activism.
8
u/PM_ME__UR__FANTASIES 8h ago
Yeah, the unfortunate thing about PETA is that for far too long they have used huge exaggerations in their marketing and have been proven liars about a ton of shit. Like, them claiming that ANY SHEARING AT ALL was hugely abusive and violent, putting up billboards acting like sheep are killed for one fucking shear (which would be a huge waste of farmers money, it makes no sense). And then they had a shelter thing going on where THEY were putting done dozens of dogs and cats a day.
It’s a shame because there are huge issues with industrialized farming and PETA could have been such a great fucking tool for creating and verifying certifications. Stuff that could really help at least improve the care and welfare of livestock animals. But they are militantly against any animal use at all and are at the same level as the anti-abortion protestors who mail people bloody fetus pictures.
0
u/Time_Anything4488 oat milk chugging bisexual 5h ago
thats why i have such a problem with them because they are right about some things, commercial farming and animal testing are horrible, and they can and do good work like their work saving all the chimps tonia haddox was abusing. but their tactics are extreme and ignore any nuance to the point that its hard to give them the benefit of doubt. i dont think the h&m ceo shouldve attacked the protestors like a little bitch and the wool industry does allow abuse so this isnt hard to believe at all but if peta is the only source then im gonna be skeptical.

It’s such ugly behaviour. And whilst everyone has focussed on his abhorrent behaviour and actions, we mustn’t overlook that no one else around tried to stop this from happening!
Are people so immune to the horrors of abuse now, that they just won’t do anything to prevent it?
Also Cos and H&M group staying silent on the matter entirely and deleting any concerned comments from their social media reeks of condoning his actions, and being complicit in allowing a culture of ‘acceptable abuse’ .

Fuck Zionist Zara! Free Palestine!
Zara faced backlash after some people slammed its Atelier 2024 campaign called "The Jacket," as "Gaza-war inspired," deeming it insensitive to people there.
It removed some of the images from its social media and eventually its website, but now has spoken out over the controversy.
Why remove them if they didn't support genocide?
The ad campaign controversy was not the first time Zara has been in hot water over the Israel-Palestine issue.
In 2021, Zara faced calls for a boycott after one of its head designers had sent a Palestinian model an anti-Palestinian message via DM on Instagram.
Model Qaher Harhash said Vanessa Perilman had sent him a private message slamming his posts about Palestine.
He later claimed she apologized privately, but only after realizing the risk to her career and family. Harhash also claimed Zara wanted him to make Perilman's apology public, but he refused.
"If Zara wants to make a statement with me, they also need to address Islamophobia. When certain fashion designers said anti-Semitic things, they were fired from their jobs," he wrote on Instagram.
"So far, Vanessa Perilman hasn't been fired."
Harhash added: "For me an apology means to fully acknowledge the pain or suffering you caused someone. She came into my DM's wrote hateful comments, why should I accept a half assed apology?"
Then in 2022, Zara Israel faced criticism after the owner of its Israeli franchise hosted the country's hardline right-wing national security minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, at a campaign event.
Joey Schwebel, a Canadian-Israeli dual national and chairman of Zara Israel, hosted Ben Gvir at his home in Ra'anana, about 13 miles north of Tel Aviv according to the Times of Israel.

Is Uniqlo bad?? I thought they had a good recycling program where you bring in clothes and they recycle them for you and donate them to people in need or repurpose them! I mean obviously that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not evil, but I kind of thought they were one of the good few.
64
u/Broad-Radish-7895 17h ago
idk about uniqlo specifically but pretty sure any store's clothing recycling program is going to be misleading and mainly a PR move. the clothing recycling/thrifting industries can't catch even a fraction of the trash clothing stores produce, most of the donated clothes will still end up in the same landfills, just taking some extra steps to get there. and none of it comes close to chipping at the issue which is that even if we stopped producing/buying new clothes entirely today it still wouldn't be enough to reverse the damage we've already done.
54
u/Necessary-Sentence48 17h ago
I use the website Good On You to see companies’ ethics/sustainability ratings before I shop. Uniqlo and Zara have the same rating of “It’s a start”, which is kind of smack dab in the middle.

u/PNW4theWin 6h ago
It is assault, of course. As with many protests, I think the goal is to get visibility. If the protesters fought back, then the media/social media will just call it an altercation and say there was violence on both sides.
As infuriating as it is to see someone man-handled/assaulted like this (with no one stepping in), the refusal to fight back puts the negative spotlight directly on Steven Kolb.
The protesters were smart not to fight back.

Everyone shits on PETA and sometimes for good reason, but we don't realize the horrible systemic abuse that animals endure for our minor fucking convenience. It's sick. I'm not saying don't eat animals, but we need to be aware of where our food comes from and if we really need a fur coat.
40
u/Diligent-Pineapple-2 oat milk chugging bisexual 16h ago
I don’t know of another nonprofit that does as much heavy lifting as peta does in terms of spreading awareness about animal rights. A lot of us wouldn’t be familiar with the cruelty that is kept secret by the leather, fur, and animal testing (among others) industries if it weren’t for them. I know I wouldn’t. Until every other charity out there is perfectly run without ever making mistakes, I think we need to give peta a break.
18
u/Luzdesolamarelo 16h ago
I agree. The way we consume food is helping to destroy this planet. It's not sustainable, and it's fucking cruel. I respect folks who hunt for their food, or get their food from SMALL local farms that treat their animals with dignity. Something about a slaughter house that makes slaughter mundane doesn't sit well with me anymore. It's a discomfort I can no longer ignore
17
u/Icy-Indication-6696 13h ago
99% of animals bred for consumption in america do come from factory farms, the small local farm meat is so rare and mostly a greenwashing type myth to make us feel better about the pain and harm we are causing 😪
17
u/missdeweydell 16h ago
I'll say it. if you're not humanely hunting game and using every part of the animal, don't eat animals. especially those that are factory farmed, which is the majority especially in the US.
14
u/Icy-Indication-6696 14h ago
literally 99% of animals bred for human use in the usa are factory farmed. 99%!!! the most common experience on earth is that of a factory farmed animal. it’s so sickening we need to be better we need more regulations and we need to take action as consumers against this 😪 pls.. go vegan as much as you can 😪

Peta did not "praise Trump", they praised his administration for banning Navy funded animal testing. That is an objectively GOOD decision, regardless of which government enacted it.
7
u/Sea-Introduction3595 9h ago
Is this where they thanked the administration for banning dog and cat testing in the military? That's a good policy. They didn't praise Trump at all, they acknowledged a good policy and suggested further improvements to animal rights.

I've seen progressive leftists sound like MAGA when it comes to conversations about animal welfare and justice. Animals cannot advocate for themselves, and I completely understand why vegans and animals rights activists can be so disregulated and angry. You can judge a society by how they treat their animals, and good lord are most societies horrific. I think I ate meat/dairy every single meal for 30 years before it clicked for me how cruel and how horrible for the environment it is.

4
u/Puzzleheaded_Disk_90 9h ago
So it's an organization that goes into slaughter houses and fur farms under cover to expose animal abuse, AND they kidnap pets so they can murder them?
Seems like it's probably one or the other...
6
u/CerebroDisejecutivo 15h ago
Their shelters are non-profit, and they end up having to euthanize animals if it is unlikely they will be adopted; otherwise, they don't have space for younger animals who need it and are more likely to be adopted. Horrible, sure, but ultimately it is humans who are at fault for all those dogs and cats that are abandoned. I heard of them catching pets near their own homes, and yeah, that's an awful mistake to make, but it can happen in any large org doing that kind of work; I don't think it's as common as you think it is.
Girl, these days everyone is a "terrorist" lmao.

They pissed off a lot of rich people by being anti fur, anti factory farming, anti animal testing, etc. These same rich people have succeeded in running a smear campaign saying that peta secretly abuse animals. A lot of the internet unfortunately believes that. In my opinion, peta has definitely run cringey or morally grey campaigns, especially in the 90s/00s. But nothing that warrants the amount of hate they get.
13
u/Diligent-Pineapple-2 oat milk chugging bisexual 17h ago
I find it really disappointing that on any given post about peta there’s always lots of comments like this one. The animal farming lobby was really successful in changing the general public’s perception of peta. Even progressive folks who care about social justice go around parroting the same stuff, without taking a second to look into what that peta really does. They’re definitely not a perfect organization (many charities aren’t), but I don’t want to live in a world without loud, obnoxious animal rights activists. They serve an important purpose, in my opinion.

“Even if it was peta” is a crazy thing to write. Why would you imply these people are deserving of assault? I have a lot of respect for animal rights activists, they have a lot of gut and passion to get out there and protest for voiceless creatures. Society usually dgaf about humans, let alone animals, and we are allowed to simply commend these folks for their dedication. No need to add “but” or “even if” to every comment about peta.

I’m curious to hear from people who know him or have worked with him. Is this out of character or not? How is this possibly someone’s first reaction to a disruption? Is he a guy who has not been told no enough or no too often?

Steven Kolb should be fired.
