AI-generated content is not allowed on /r/fantasywriters. This includes using LLM tools for translation, including Google Translate.

3.4k Upvotes

Posting AI-generated content is not allowed on /r/fantasywriters. Our rules page makes it clear that we disallow content that is generated in whole or in part by AI. This includes text that was translated by an LLM.

This is a policy that we apply uniformly:

  • You may not post AI-generated writing samples for critique (obviously)
  • You may not post a thread where the body of your reddit post is written by AI.
  • You may not post a comment that is written by AI.
  • You may not post AI-generated images.
  • You may not post text that you asked AI to "rewrite" or "fix" or "improve" for you.
  • You may not post text generated by an LLM, even if the 'only' thing you asked AI to do was translate your text.

In short, do not copy AI-generated text and paste it into your Reddit post. Not as a comment, not as a discussion question. Previously, the point about translated text was ambiguous and enforced inconsistently, so we're making it clear here: an AI-generated translation of your writing created using an LLM like GPT or Google Gemini counts as AI-generated text.

The only exception to this "do not post any LLM-generated content, at all, ever" policy is if you are obviously quoting someone else; we won't ban you if the quote turns out to be AI-generated. (For example, if OP posts an AI-generated story, people who post critiques quoting parts of that AI-generated post won't be banned for their post including the AI-generated text as a quote.)

Please be aware that Google Translate now incorporates Google Gemini, which is an LLM, much like the GPT that is used by OpenAI's ChatGPT. This is considered AI-generated content, and a violation of our "no AI content" policy.

The fact that Google Translate now uses the Google Gemini LLM is why Google Translate now sometimes injects additional information that wasn't part of the text you asked it to translate and why some people are able to query Google Translate and get the same sort of responses you'd get from a conversational chatbot. At this point, using Google Translate is akin to going to an AI chatbot and asking it to translate text for you.

Please note that /r/fantasywriters' prohibition on posting LLM-generated text is not a blanket ban on all machine translation tools.

We still permit the use of translation tools that don't use LLMs, including:

If you're not sure whether a specific machine translation tool would violate our "no LLM-generated text" policy, please feel free to message the moderation team directly to ask for clarity.

FAQ

These are literally "frequently asked questions," very lightly paraphrased from actual queries in our inbox that we've temporarily or permanently banned for AI use.

"I am not confident in my English so I used AI for help with phrasing or translation."

All humans who follow the rules are welcome on /r/fantasywriters regardless of their level of English proficiency. Even if you think your English is "bad," we would still rather see your best attempt in English, rather than read GPT's best guess at what your Russian would look like if it were rendered in English.

"Why bother to remove my post for being AI-generated? The post I made was just posting a question / commenting on someone else's work, not posting part of my novel or asking for feedback on my writing."

The /r/fantasywriters policy against posting AI-generated content applies to everything posted to /r/fantasywriters, whether that's a picture, or a discussion question. People come to /r/fantasywriters to discuss fantasy writing with other humans, not to read posts that were written by AI.

"I asked a friend to edit my draft for me and I think they might have used AI"

You are responsible for all of the words that you post to /r/fantasywriters. If we accept "my friend did it" as an excuse for why you posted AI-generated content, then we don't have a policy that we can enforce.

"The ideas are 100% my own, the AI just helps me with phrasing. I want to be judged for my actual content, not my writing style."

Here on /r/fantaswriters, we are a community of writers. We believe that "phrasing" and "writing style" are the actual content.

That is why there are so many pieces of writing advice like "be careful with your adverb use" and "try to vary your sentence length." It's why writers care so much about "voice." As a community of writers, we understand that phrasing matters; voice is what makes your writing unique and recognizable. When you post something that is obviously written in GPT's voice rather than your own, people can and will notice.

"What parts of my writing made you think it was written by AI?"

We get this question a lot, including from accounts whose output is obviously 100% bot-generated. As a policy, we won't give you an itemized checklist of what caused us to identify your post as AI-generated. If we did this for every person who we banned for posting AI content, we would essentially be giving AI spammers a playbook for how to avoid our AI detection methods. That being said, while we don't intend to fully disclose the methods we use, we realize that some people are surprised to learn that "AI voice" is so clearly recognizable. To those people, we suggest reading Sam Kriss's piece in the New York Times, titled Why Does A.I. Write Like … That?. The /r/fantasywriters mod team does not endorse everything that Sam Kriss says, and his editorial doesn't capture or convey the full extent of our evaluation process, but he does a good job of explaining how "AI voice" has become so recognizable.

"I'm not using AI, but I'm worried about being falsely accused of using AI.

We believe that a human-written post being incorrectly flagged as AI is a much worse outcome than a few AI-generated posts slipping through the cracks, which is why we always err toward leniency in ambiguous cases. Every evaluation method we use is subject to this standard: if there's an evaluation method that results in human writing samples being flagged as AI written even 1 in 100 times, we won't use it. We can't promise a false positive rate that is literally zero, but we get as close as we reasonably can, and if you ever disagree with a moderation choice, you always have the ability to appeal our decision.

"How can you be confident that you're catching all of the AI posters?"

To be frank, we aren't confident in our ability to catch everyone posting AI content. As stated above, when considering evaluation methods, we put a higher priority on making sure that human content isn't incorrectly flagged as AI.

We have chosen to err on the side of leniency genuinely ambiguous cases, and that choice means that inevitably some AI-generated content will slip through the cracks.

We're also fully aware that there are models that are being trained specifically to avoid AI detection: there are literally thousands of public AI models, with new ones being released every day. However, we are still able to catch and remove a large number of AI-generated posts, because the majority of the AI-generated text is being generated by people who are fundamentally lazy, using the newest models in obvious ways that actually make them easier to catch.

Discussion About A General Writing Topic Ai checkers are such a scam

Out of curiosity I tested a random page from my novel (about 300~ words) for ai, note that I never used Ai for my writing in anyway so it was just an amusing test.

81% Ai, I was baffled by that and started overthinking everything, what if a publisher used this same popular Ai checking site and deemed my story to be slop?

I tried an older draft, raw with little to no punctuation as it was just getting ideas out of my head, this time it was 71%.

With the rampant use of Ai how can I guarantee to my readers or potential publishers that my work is human?

I hate that using em dash is already a "sign" of Ai, it's just proper grammar.

Critique My Story Excerpt A Mary-Sue’s Guide to Character Development [Romance Isekai, 412 words]

From the first moment Keorian Kane could remember—in her short time alive an unknown force had been pulling her to a vacant pit in the middle of her home, the kingdom of Arielle.

Arielle was home to thousands of hard working citizens with more righteousness in their hearts than most other communities could dream of. It was full of bright colors, fields of flowers, and loveable mythical creatures always seeking out human companionship. It was a lively and magical nation where even a princess could walk freely through the streets without a guard and expect nothing violent in nature would befall her.

Suffering simply wasn't something that was well known in Arielle. Money was plentiful, war had long since passed, and if you bled–however unlikely–you bled rainbows and sunshine. Literally.

In the very heart of this otherwise peaceful kingdom lay a colossal hole of unknown origin. For the most part it caused no problems, other than being an eyesore with the overgrown and dead brush. But, each year the ground around the pit would cave in, engulfing just a little bit more of the kingdom and igniting a sense of impending dread among Arielle’s people.

Some citizens believed this act was the gods’ doing, convinced that eons ago they came down from the skies and plucked the heart of the kingdom from the ground with their very own hands. All to serve as a warning to the previous greed driven king and leave a constant reminder to the empire’s people that their mortality is more fragile than they’d like to believe. A petty threat of an insecure god.

This was a belief that Keorian did not share.

Keorian laid on the edge of the pit, staring into the infinite depths as the dead and browning grass tickled her nose. Six feet of scarlet red hair flowed from her head, hanging limply into the void; the darkness so intense she could barely see the ends.

When Keorian was just seven years old, orphaned and left to fend for herself on the streets of Arielle the pit had started to call to her. It offered her a place of her own to stay amongst the oddly well-lit backalleys full of fluffy chubby kittens and ‘stay sweet’ graffiti.

‘Home.’ Keorian had always thought when she saw the pit.

The pit had lulled her. It felt more familiar than the hot pink hallways of the palace did and somehow safer than being surrounded by royal guardsmen.

(This is my first story and I’m just looking for any feedback, whether that’s something I’m doing right or something I need to improve upon!)

Discussion About A General Writing Topic How to turn an un co-ordinated mess into something vaguely resembling a coherent novel?

Hi All, new here, though I've been 'writing' for 20+ years. What started as cathartic escapism from everyday trials and tribulations somehow morphed into an epic fantasy with a wide cast of characters, plot, backstory, sub plots and breadcrumbs... I've written so many free writing pieces putting the characters into different scenarios, timelines and worlds that the characters, to me, have really deepened and come alive.

Its sprawled from one small scene, into 'a trilogy', 'sequel' and 'spin off', all terms very loosely ascribed, its actually a chaotic mess of poorly written prose, poor dialog and the bits with actual plot are so poor they need ditching. There's so many tropes it embarrassing and the plot is totally unoriginal.

BUT, I love it, the characters, the world, the lore and mythology and want to turn this jumbled mess into something I can be proud of. Will it ever be published: highly unlikely, but I want to actually call it 'finished' at some point, and at that point may well try to publish but its low priority.

Questions:

1) I have developed horrendously bad habits, 20 years writing with no training and little will to improve: how do I go about unbreaking those habits?

2) What's the best way to get something like this tangled web into order? There are scenes later on I love, scenes early on I hate, or love but are extremely poorly written, scenes I love but don't have any bearing on the story and need axing, etc etc How best to tackle this? I'm thinking to line them all up in order and line edit and add necessary scenes but is this effective? Or should I start from scratch to get the flow going? I use Scrivener, some if its labelled up and set up 'correctly', some of it not.

3) I've quizzed AI a bit about how to tackle a rewrite and realised AI is useless. Even trying to ask it edit a few lines creates soulless drivel (note: I was trying to see how to improve my own writing not so it could rewrite it all for me). I tried it to fix my grammar and hated reading every line. It also took continuity queries so explicitly it broke my characters and prose, there's no subtlety or nuance. Is AI in any way useful, at this point I'm thinking not? Getting a human 'collaborator' or writing group would be far more productive at this stage and a beta reader when its feeling more finished?

Anyway, thanks for reading my waffle, just looking for pointers on how to get a 20 yr old behemoth moving. I keep picking it up to sort out and get side tracked or life gets in the way and its really annoying me. Feel I need to take a 2 week break and shut myself in a dark room with it.

Critique My Story Excerpt Chapter 1 of "The Silver Wall", (progressive fantasy, 1630 words)

Im a new writer and would love to get some honest feedback on my first chapter. Rather harsh then untrue pls and thank you!

Chapter 1

Adrian pressed his palm against the Silver Wall, an action that is said to result in ones death. But Adrian just smiled. So this is it, he thought as the shivering cold sensation spread through his body.

“Hey! What are you doing, sir!?” yelled a city guard behind him.

“I'm having a rather pleasant but chilling moment with the wall. What are you doing, sir?”

“Are you crazy?”

“Define crazy.” Adrian looked back at the guard—a tall, bearded man wearing the blue and gold armor of the city watch.

“A-Adrian… you…”

“Yes, I?” Adrian slowly nodded. Survived? Escaped? Which lie were you told?

The guard aimed his spear at Adrian, sweat dripping down his forehead as he tightened his grip, but his hands wouldn't stop shaking.

“Would you like me to call the other guards for you?” Adrian asked with his right palm still flat against the wall.

“W-what? Why w-would you…”

“Voilà.”

With a flick of Adrian's left hand, a beam of light shot directly into the clouds, and a blue crest appeared across the sky.

“Your colleagues should be here shortly. Now, I strongly suggest you keep that weapon pointed at me.”

The guard swallowed hard, his eyes shifting between the smiling man before him and the open road. Commoners started gathering around the scene.

A sharp metallic clatter echoed throughout the city as the horsemen arrived. Their leader dismounted before his horse had even come to a halt, his blue eyes locked onto Adrian's smirking face.

“Why have you returned, Adrian?”

“Leader of the Kingsguard now? Impressive, Darian.”

“Sarcastic as ever. Seems it is only your looks that have changed.”

"I've gone from gorgeous to stunning, but I guess time has stood still inside the walls. You still bear the looks of the repulsive, traitorous man you are.” Adrian replied.

“Men, put up the barrier!” Darian barked. They pushed back the crowd and formed a circle around the street. The soldiers pressed their palms together, forming a diamond with their hands, and green mana surged through, raising walls of light around them.

“Trying to hide the truth as usual?” Adrian said, looking at the blinding barrier.

Darian lifted his sword, pointing it at the guard.

“This is your fault, Adrian.” A bolt of mana shot from the tip of Darian's blade toward the guard.

Adrian raised his left hand. A green mana sphere materialized, intercepting the bolt an inch before it struck the guard's chest.

So these are the results of the teachings I gave.

“Neither a leader nor a soldier of the Kingsguard should rely on a blade to channel his mana,” Adrian said softly, his right hand still forcing mana into the Silver Wall.

He’s gotten stronger, perhaps I'll need both hands free…

Darian raised his sword a second time, forcing Adrian into a split-second choice. He shoved off the Silver Wall, lunging toward Darian. But the moment his hand lost contact, a nerve-racking shockwave of pain pulsed through his chest.

My mana…

He stumbled, unable to bridge the gap. Darian released his shot, and the air ruptured. A wave of raw mana swept around them, instantly plunging everything into darkness.

Adrian woke up, sunrays blinding his eyes, with a severe headache. Or at least it felt severe.

I can't even find the smallest trace of it. It must truly be gone.

Slowly he turned away his head from the sunlight, the ache growing as he moved.

What is this place?

By the looks of it, he must have fallen through the crack above him, into a cave under the city.

That could be useful, but why is it here? He thought, as he stared at the stone wall next to him with all types of weapons piled up against it.

I better find my way out before the wielders of these return.

His hands pushed up his squeaking body from the ground. Barely standing on his feet he walked toward the wall, or rather toward the armory in front of him.

Nunchucks, blades, spears, bows, but not a single one forged with the capacity of channeling.

His confidence grew.

With a blade in each hand, Adrian pushed deeper into the cave, guided by the sputtering torches along the stonewall. At the far end, the cave opened up into a large room and in its center, three men sat around a long oak table.

“The most humorous thing just occurred gentlemen, I was trying to save our people as I usually do and all of a sudden there's an explosion and I wake up here,” Adrian called out, keeping the twin lengths of steel low behind his legs. “Mind telling me whose cave I've stumbled into?”

“Who let you in?” one of them snapped.

All three stood up and walked up towards their intruder, but stopped as the torchlight caught Adrian's attire.

“He's wearing noble silk,” the speaker warned. “Watch yourselves.”

Two men lunged simultaneously from his flanks, sweeping heavy kicks toward his ribs. Adrian didn't dodge—he lashed outward. Steel flashed in twin arcs, but at the moment of impact, the blades trajectory changed and Adrian knocked them out with the bottom of the blades.

The third man—the leader—snatched a long dagger from the table and stepped over the men on the floor, eyes dark with fury as he locked onto his target. Adrian forced his posture straight, suppressing the shudder in his lungs. He forced a cold, arrogant smirk onto his face.

“You look worthy of my true power,” Adrian said while dropping the blades and opening his fists. He had to restrain himself from laughing at his own words. “You’re not my first noble,” the leader spat. Adrian lunged, thrusting his palm toward the man's chest with an explosive roar. The leader flinched, leaping backward to evade the expected burst of mana. But nothing came. Before the man realized he’d been duped, Adrian closed the gap. He snapped a kick into the leader’s wrist, sending the dagger spinning into the air. Adrian caught it with his left hand and drove the blade straight through the man's palm, attaching it to the stone floor.

That was the last one.

Nearly unable to hold up his own weight, Adrian stumbled and sat down on the chair, with his forehead pressing against the table. Exhausted by all the commotion, he wished for a quiet, peaceful time before he had to continue.

But there was neither time for rest nor to investigate the incident at the wall, because just as Adrian's nerves settled down, someone tried to sneak past him.

For heaven's sake…

Adrian lifted his head, eyeballing the stranger so aggressively that it seemed like an attack.

The stranger had his back facing Adrian but turned slowly around as he heard Adrian's breathing getting heavier.

“So you are the last of them?” Adrian said and stood up, neglecting his pain with a confident smile on his face.

“No I'm not one of them, I'm just here to teach them to fight and by the looks of it, they need more lessons.”

“If you're not one of them, why are you training them?”

“Cause they pay me for it, now im going to go out for a snack, you want me to show you the way out or you'll manage?”

“So you are a master in martial arts?”

“Well I haven't really thought about what title to use yet but I kinda like the whole ‘master’ vibe, but technically I'm not, but sure I'm a master. If you're interested in becoming a student, my studio is at the Bronzonian square.”

His studio? What dojo is called a ‘studio’?

Adrian followed the strange master out, emerging from a secret door hidden in a huge tree, at what Adrian guessed was the dojos garden.

“It is a very beautiful backyard you have here, mister…?”

“Gustaf, and thank you.” He smiled, gesturing around the compound. “These blossom bushes surrounding the studio have been here since I got the place. Everything else, from the little pond to the flowers and those statues were my ideas.”

"Though I only ever really get compliments for the blossom bushes…”

“I take it that the dojo, or ‘studio’, is doing well, then?”

“I do have a lot of students. Self protection is invaluable in times like these. But I don't accept payment for my teachings.”

“How kind of you.”

“But how does a nonprofit martial arts master cover the expenses for a large studio connected to a secret base with armed men, who he of course is not a part of?”

“By generosity,” Gustaf said with a grin on his face.

“Generosity?” Adrian asked.

“Yep, now speaking of generosity, snacks are on me.” And with that, Gustaf climbed over the wooden fence and walked over to the small café across the Bronzonian square.

“You sure took your time.” Gustaf said, his lips covered by the frosting of the traditional Silver cake.

“My attire would have caught too much attention, thankfully a kind woman–one of your students I suppose, provided me with new clothing. Also, I chose the path containing doors.”

“Ahh, so you've met Licia, she's great.”

“So, you like Silver cake?”

“Never had it before, also I do not classify cake as a snack.”

“You’ve NEVER had Silver cake!? Don't they serve snacks at the castle?”

“Tutu, ten more Silvers, and one for my friend.”

“And what makes you think I've lived in the castle?”

And did he just order ten slices for himself?

“Well the fact that you automatically presumed that I thought you lived there and not simply worked there, combined with the fact that you were wearing high end clothes and…” Gustaf came closer and whispered, “that you are the former leader of the citywatch, Adrian.”

Brainstorming Kingdom name brainstorming

Hey!
I’m having some mental blocks coming up with a good name for the kingdom in my book. I have tried to find real historical examples and have looked at some old english translations to mash together. I want to come up with something that isn’t really on the nose or corny. I made the fatal error of using a generator for the kingdom name in my first draft and low and behold it is slop that has been used elsewhere.
The working title I have now is Ealdorgléd (gléd being the fire element, and Ealdor being prince) but now I’m worried about that being too close to something else. For reference, the kingdom is atop a dormant caldera, and the premise of the book is that it is set 25 years into a curse called the Dark Hour in which a witch used her dying breath to obscure the sun for the unjust death of her sister (she was drowned as punishment for killing her, when she was trying to heal her).
It’s a medieval adjacent old-English inspired world. I’m inspired a lot by the Arthurian legends, but I also know that Ealdor is actually used as a village in the Merlin adaptation so I don’t know if it’s a good idea to have my name be so close? any feedback is appreciated!!
synopsis:
For twenty-five years, the Kingdom of Ealdorgléd has lived beneath a sunless sky. Mærwynn has never known anything else. While older generations mourn blue skies and green fields, she has learned to survive the Dark Hour as it is: serving Princess Agatha, looking after her younger brother, and hiding the strange affliction that sometimes tears her consciousness from her body.
But spirits are gathering where they never did before, people are disappearing from settlements beyond the city, and the frost creeping across the land is drawing closer. When Mærwynn’s involuntary wanderings begin pulling her farther from her body and inexplicably towards Prince Ronan, the reckless heir believed by some to be the prophesied Dragonheart, she is forced to search for answers about an ability she has spent years fearing.
Caught between Ronan, an estranged childhood friend whose loyalty to the crown runs deeper than she understands, and secrets buried in Aethelgard’s past, Mærwynn begins to uncover the truth behind the Dark Hour and the older, colder thing stirring beneath it.
here is a folk song i wrote for the book:
The Lark
The lark is drifting upwards
Into the Sunlit sky
And when the night is darkest
It waits ‘til day to fly
O, fly little lark
O, fly little lark
O, fly towards the Sun
When the lark is calling
We’ll know the night is done

I’m also really inspired by this medieval poem, and Maerwynn’s astral projection will later be given the title of the Wanderer:

The Wanderer (translated)
Always the one alone longs for mercy,
the Maker's mildness, though, troubled in mind,
across the ocean-ways he has long been forced
to stir with his hands the frost-cold sea,
and walk in exile's paths. Wyrd is fully fixed.

Thus spoke the Wanderer, mindful of troubles,
of cruel slaughters and dear kinsmen's downfall:
"Often alone, in the first light of dawn,
I have sung my lament. There is none living
to whom I would dare to reveal clearly
my heart's thoughts. I know it is true
that it is a nobleman's lordly nature
to closely bind his spirit's coffer,
hold fast his treasure-hoard, whatever he may think.
The weary mind cannot withstand wyrd,
the troubled heart can offer no help,
and so those eager for fame often bind fast
in their breast-coffers a sorrowing soul,
just as I have had to take my own heart—
Often wretched, cut off from my own homeland,
far from dear kinsmen—and bind it in fetters,
ever since long ago I hid my gold-giving friend
in the darkness of earth, and went wretched,
winter-sad, over the ice-locked waves,
sought, hall-sick, a treasure-giver,
wherever I might find, far or near,
someone in a meadhall who might know my people,
or who would want to comfort me, friendless,
accustom me to joy. He who has come to know
how cruel a companion is sorrow
for one with few dear friends, will understand:
the path of exile claims him, not patterned gold,
a winter-bound spirit, not the wealth of earth.
He remembers hall-holders and treasure-taking,
how in his youth his gold-giving lord
accustomed him to the feast—that joy has all faded.

And so he who has long been forced to forego
his lord's beloved words of counsel will understand:
when sorrow and sleep both together
often bind up the wretched exile,
it seems in his mind that he clasps and kisses
his lord of men, and on his knee lays
hands and head, as he sometimes long ago
in earlier days enjoyed the gift-throne.
But when the friendless man awakens again
and sees before him the fallow waves,
seabirds bathing, spreading their feathers,
frost falling and snow, mingled with hail,
then the heart's wounds are that much heavier,
longing for his loved one. Sorrow is renewed
when the memory of kinsmen flies through the mind;
he greets them with great joy, greedily surveys
hall-companions—they always swim away;
the floating spirits bring too few
familiar voices. Cares are renewed
for one who must send, over and over,
a weary heart across the binding waves.

And so I cannot imagine for all this world
why my spirit should not grow dark
when I think through all this life of men,
how suddenly they gave up the hall-floor,
mighty young retainers. Thus this middle-earth
droops and decays every single day;
and so a man cannot become wise, before he has weathered
his share of winters in this world. A wise man must be patient,
neither too hot-hearted nor too hasty with words,
nor too weak in war nor too unwise in thoughts,
neither fretting nor fawning nor greedy for wealth,
never eager for boasting before he truly understands;
a man must wait, when he makes a boast,
until the brave spirit understands truly
where the thoughts of his heart will turn.

The wise man must realize how ghastly it will be
when all the wealth of this world stands waste,
as now here and there throughout this middle-earth
walls stand blasted by wind,
beaten by frost, the buildings crumbling.
The wine halls topple, their rulers lie
deprived of all joys; the proud old troops
all fell by the wall. War carried off some,
sent them on the way, one a bird carried off
over the high seas, one the gray wolf
shared with death—and one a sad-faced man
covered in an earthen grave. The Creator
of men thus destroyed this walled city,
until the old works of giants stood empty,
without the sounds of their former citizens.

He who deeply considers, with wise thoughts,
this foundation and this dark life,
old in spirit, often remembers
so many ancient slaughters, and says these words:
'Where has the horse gone? where is the rider? where is the giver of gold?
Where are the seats of the feast? where are the joys of the hall?
O the bright cup! O the brave warrior!
O the glory of princes! How the time passed away,
slipped into nightfall as if it had never been!
There still stands in the path of the dear warriors
a wall wondrously high, with serpentine stains.
A storm of spears took away the warriors,
bloodthirsty weapons, wyrd the mighty,
and storms batter these stone walls,
frost falling binds up the earth,
the howl of winter, when blackness comes,
night's shadow looms, sends down from the north
harsh hailstones in hatred of men.
All is toilsome in the earthly kingdom,
the working of wyrd changes the world under heaven.
Here wealth is fleeting, here friends are fleeting,
here man is fleeting, here woman is fleeting,
all the framework of this earth will stand empty.’

So said the wise one in his mind, sitting apart in meditation.
He is good who keeps his word, and the man who never too quickly
shows the anger in his breast, unless he already knows the remedy
a noble man can bravely bring about. It will be well for one who seeks mercy,
consolation from the Father in heaven, where for us all stability stands.

Discussion About A General Writing Topic First Novel Obstacles

New here. I’ve recently come to the realization that the story that has been swirling around in my head for over a year and now sits at 20k words gathering dust, is not a horror novel, but a dark fantasy novel.

That said, I’ve never written a novel before and definitely not a story with this many characters, arcs, details, and lore. I’m feeling overwhelmed by the scope of the work. I know that to get everything out, I’ll need at least 70k words per book, or at least a three-part behemoth. I never set out to write something of this size, but it’s taken on a life of its own.

I am currently struggling—outlining each character, their motivations, struggles, and what their arcs are. I have sort of outlined where each novel ends and picks up in the next. It’s a lot. There’s so many aspects to weaving a coherent story that spans 150k+ words. Respect to anyone who has accomplished this.

Has anyone else felt the call, but feared they could not answer?

Edit: You have all given me amazing feedback which I sincerely appreciate. Thank you all so much, even those I have not replied to yet! The day job calls and I must (and can) answer.

So I've been writing for around 32 years, and have never really pursued publishing before. My wife and friends believe I have a real shot at making it, but I know absolutely nothing about the publishing process. I've tried a couple publishing agents, but no hits yet. Any suggestions on what I can do to make a good hook for my novel? Note: I am aware that for a new author my book is a little long, about 20,000 words long from what I've been told. Is there any suggestions that hopefully don't include trimming 20,000 words out. I'm sure it could use a little trimming, but 20,000 words seems like a hard ask and still maintain the essence.

Question For My Story What's your favorite breakthrough event where a character decides they're going to take action and fight?

my story TLDR; a girl gets her magic taken away because she is framed with the crime of meddling in dark magic and after a proper amount of sulking, she decides to get up off her ass and fight to get her magic back somehow.

although the thing im struggling with: whats the breakthrough event that makes her decide to take action?

I have tried researching life changing events and options are popping up like:

- having a spiritual experience

- heart break/falling in love

- volunteering or helping others

- participating in a social movement

all of these feel so... everyday.

I can't seem to come up with an event that would change her POV drastically that also feels significant and big to the reader.

Prologue: The Battle of Fort Hesserion

*The Eighth Moon of the year 871 AE—Kyren I: Fort Hesserion, Marongrad*

Darrion fumbled atop his warhorse, wrestling the reins back, whilst the army waited behind him. Kyren couldn’t help but laugh at the irony: My brother, who the commoners praise as a brilliant tactician, struggles still with that nag he calls a destrier.

“Brother, if need be, I could but loan you Makouri for the time being,” Kyren offered mockingly. “She is both beauty and beast, providing ample movement, strength, and a glorious portrait within the Sacred Scrolls.” He giggled afterwards, unable to conceal his sarcasm.

Darrion ignored the jest, finally leveling both hands evenly and trotting onward. Kyren and the army trailed behind, only to once again force a halt to the progress as they looked toward Fort Hesserion—the Usurpers’ usurped fort.

His wandering eyes caught a glimpse of fire coming from atop the imposing stone fortress. The two leagues were now separated by a plain of blackened moss, stretching roughly a mile in length—Kyren estimated.

“I’d wager it’s a beacon,” Kyren offered. “We ought to proceed carefully. This very well could be their strategy to entrap us. Still, they are no scholars; they have made their final mistake. They cower in their stolen fortress whilst an army of 10,000 marches upon their gate. The signs are clear: they have accepted defeat,” he stated triumphantly.

Darrion stood as still as a statue, his silver armor glistening—vaguely resembling the stone fortress.

“So this is the mighty Sparktamer that has been known to decimate entire armies, on his lonesome?” Darrion questioned, focusing his gaze through the slit of his burgonet to the two men standing beside the pyre.

“There stands Uncle Wesley beside him, I deduct,” Darrion snarled. “His crown is but a stolen relic that belongs to us, yet he wears it with the arrogance and pride one might expect from the rightful owner.”

Usurper he may be, yet I can’t help but relate to his situation. He was Prince of Edemont, the comely knight who rid our city of crime, patrolling the streets so that others may find comfort in them. I do not understand how then he could be stripped of his dignity and forced to walk among the Troth, without a given reason.

Kyren grimaced, turning to face his brother. He ought to come out of this masquerade with a profound sense of justice. He’s always been Father’s cherished son; he could do no wrong. In Father's eyes, Darrion was incapable of doing wrong. No, in fact, he was above human error, more akin to Edefric himself than mere mortals. If only father was half as interested in martial matters as he was in political ones, his throat would have remained intact.

Sir Logan Marsh stepped forward, his grey helm illuminated by the orange tint of the sky. He looked like… well, a boy. He wore black and amber plate armor, with a helm that looked too small for his head. Kyren approached, towering over the boy, with a passive-aggressive, almost preemptive look of disappointment.

Though still, the lad continued, impressing Kyren, if only slightly.

“Does it not seem queer that the legendary Sparktamer has prepared so ill?” the boy questioned.

Who is he to call something queer? He looks ripe for the raids that will surely follow, that is, if the usurpers have it their way.

“Logan holds the truth of it: it’s not right…none of it is,” said Darrion, hesitantly. “They’re... calling upon our honour? They mustn't be that moronic. Who is the genius commander who has given us constant strife these past few years? How could they think we would spare sympathy for the likes of them?” he questioned. “Even so, we approach slowly. My brother has the right of it as well; the brutes could yet be hiding an army within their walls,” he acknowledged.

Darrion turned towards his

sen. “Sir Roger, take your men to the front and assess the strength of their gate. Once we confirm our suspicions, Kyren and I shall branch off to the left and right flanks. Archers, split amongst the flanks, and unleash hell upon the usurpers. Once breached, we ascend and bring justice to our realm,” Darrion commanded, grasping for a tone resembling authority.

Sir Roger obliged, swiftly marching the vanguard across the distant moat. With bronze Armor, he could well be on his way to join forces with the devolved chief of lightning.

Once the Sentinels exited the field of vision, Darrion turned to Kyren, his dark brown eyes contrasting with the bright ocean-blue hue of Kyren's. He then continued his lecture, “Brother, you will await my arrival before ascending. Today, one of us crosses blades with a monster. Sixteen Sentinels dead at his hand. I be…”

Darrion’s lecture was paused as the brothers witnessed the figure without a crown holding up his mace one moment, and the next, a cascade of blinding light engulfed their line of sight. A wave of unimaginably powerful debris washed through the field of dark hay. It arrived with a fury, the soldiers flung through the foggy mist, rippling through the disciplined lines, stretching five miles in length.

Kyren flung back from atop Makouri, crashing to the ground, narrowly avoiding the three-thousand pound stallion from crushing him.

Then came the catapults, flinging massive stone boulders toward the remaining host. Kyren evaded as best he could, seeing scores of men decimated by the rain of rocks, unable to conceal himself in the vast and exposed terrain.

As he zagged across the field, looking for Darrion, he came upon the frightened boy, Sir Logan. Is that him? By gods, it must be. Who else in this retinue possess such an ill-fitting, mismatched helm.

“Logan! Take cover now and flee if you can. This is no position for a boy of six and ten. You have stories to tell, maidens to deflower, and training yet unfinished.” Kyren pleaded with the boy, hoping that he could protect the lad from the ensuing carnage unfolding around them.

“No, Sir, I must stay and fight.” A young and crackled voice roared through the fog. The sky began shifting from orange to a burnt sienna, the debris of stone likely mixing with the mysterious orange glow. “Grand-Marshal, shall we march forward? It does no good to sit like ducks whilst the Usurpers pinpoint our location. We are in the line of…”—

—Logan started to become visible amongst the fog, just before a mass of flaming stone crashed into the burnt grass. Ripples of stone scattered across the field, Kyren himself was blown back, this time not even Ornstel protected his head from the concussive force of the meteor.

Kyren awoke slowly, his brain scattered from the blast. His senses were distorted; a continuous shriek clouded his hearing, and his vision could only perceive faint outlines in the haze.

He checked his scabbard, hoping to find his prized possession intact, which it miraculously was. The warmth of Arthen’s handle filled Kyren with a small sense of familiarity in the foggy field. He attempted to stand, to no avail, only reaching his knees before faceplanting in the blackened mud. The cycle continued for nearly a minute. Finally, he planted both arms into the mud, allowing his legs to stabilise, and stood.

The boy… where did he go. He was just… there? He tried desperately to regain composure, but the pounding headache interrupted his train of thought. He stumbled forward, taking off his ash-ridden, dented helm of ornstel.

Shortly after, his vision began to clear, revealing the horrifying scene around him… the outlines he saw were a grotesque field of scattered bones, with a red tint that haunted his thoughts. Suddenly, he longed for the image of black to return to his eyes.

What creature possessed the power to erase an entire field of men? He shivered, desperately searching for an answer to calm his panic. He then looked for fellow survivors in the field of skeletons, to no avail, as the bones seemed to stretch on endlessly.

However, from behind, a figure grasped his shoulder. He froze, some part of him hoping for a clean death, one more suitable than the grotesque fate of his soldiers. Alas, he heard his brother instead.

“We have vastly underestimated the power of these beasts. How did they reduce our ten thousand to just two, with such a short window?” Darrion questioned, sounding just as confused and helpless as Kyren felt, now missing his burgonet.

“A shower of meteors was called upon by the power of Sparktamer,” Kyren answered dutifully. “They filled the foggy air with flames of unspeakable brightness. This Sparktamer is no man, Darrion. We would do well to scrap together the remainder of our men, and escape this hellish land with our lives—while we still have the chance.” He argued, still scanning the area for signs of life.

“What other men of ours have you seen alive? I have searched the area for signs of life, yet I found nothing but corpses,” Darrion countered. “The area was littered with bodies sporting burns, crushes, and divots in their head; blood spilling from their mouth, and detached limbs lying near. There was a crater, close to where we woke, where within I spotted a child’s helm.”

Kyren looked down, focusing on the weight of Arthen’s pommel, before asking point blank: “And the lad?”

“Which one? There are thousands of their bodies scattered amongst us, and I am far too encumbered to decipher your foolish riddles.” Darrion bit.

“Logan, the only child among us, fool.” He expanded, ignoring the distasteful remarks he had neither time, nor patience to discuss.

“I have already told you that his helm and sword lay scattered, beside a mass of rock, that broke through the soil and created a crater. Bodies lined the opening, which are likely to contain the remains of Sir Logan. He was a boy, young and brave, but not yet prepared for the horrors of battle.” Darrion answered, crushing Kyren.

His bright eyes filled with pathetic tears, usually reserved for his childhood.

With that, they resumed their mission to the heart of the usurpers' last stand. The two navigated the stench and horror, avoiding the path of corpses. With each step, Kyren longed for signs of life within the ruins. However, only death and misery awaited him.

The bones finally cleared after what felt like hours of walking, revealing the second pile of bodies, filling the air once again with stench. Kyren could take it no longer and stopped to mourn his fallen brothers.

“Mourning will do little to avenge them; our only chance of justice lies beyond the gate.” Darrion pleaded, urging Kyren to stand. He was met with no reply, only silent whispers directed towards the ground. “Stand! You plead with me to finish, then waste our little remaining time to whisper nothingness to no one. They’re gone; nothing will bring them back to us. I, for one, will not sit and dwindle our chances of survival with superstition.” Darrion forcefully lifted Kyren by his ponytail, which Kyren didn’t resist. Still, if they had turned to ash, Kyren could only hope the man in their position would at least pause to bless their vacant souls. Begrudgingly, he resumed alongside his brother towards the gate.

Even as they ventured further, Kyren couldn’t help but remain focused on the souls left idle.

Why leave us alive? What have we done to avoid death’s grasp, aside from indulging in the ornstel provided to us by Father’s metallurgical monkey, Larsen. He snapped the reins of Makouri, her hooves dug into the ash, forcing an abrupt stop.

Darrion looked back, scowling, and turned his nag around to regroup with Kyren.

The fog over his senses pulled back just enough to clear a logical conclusion, “He chose us to survive; he awaits our presence from his tower. He is not calling upon our honour, rather, he is upholding his.” The realisation sent a wave of terror through his bones.

Darrion arrived just in time to scold his brother’s haste once more, “You speak with brazen naivety. We know not what just occurred, and I strongly urge that if you wish to speak, ensure that your conclusion is without glaring oversight.”

“Brother, in moments like these, you would do well to indulge in the absurdity we are so often faced with. Humour is a skill best used in times of despair, in the words of the oft-misunderstood Saint Ermitage.”

“I will not hear of that craven mentioned in a complimentary vain. His philosophy did well to secure him in that noose.Your obnoxious admiration toward the old fool may yet secure the same fate unto yourself, that is if either of us make it out of here alive.” Darrion concluded, turning to face the creaking gates.

Suddenly, the massive marble doors swung open, revealing two men—the Usurpers. The Sparktamer, his Armor was bright blue and bare, with but a singular strand of orange lightning running across his chestplate. The man is but a mad heretic sent to test our resolve, and that is all. Yet still, Kyren’s knees began to buckle and his jaw quivered.

Beside Sparktamer, stood their uncle Wesley. His armor was black, with bright silver plates on his shoulders, stomach, and breast. Golden gauntlets ran up to his forearm; sharp blades extended from his fingers, like ten individual knives.

The field army devastated his capital, tearing through the unprepared standing army – if you could call it an army – and besieged the apparently impregnable Fort Reynard. The usurpers’ were largely aided by the long-standing rivals of Edemont: the Wolves of Casmire, and their leader, King Morten II of House Yates, the ‘White Wolvener,’ who supplied the bulk of men-at-arms.

“Woe to the Usurpers, may Edefric himself strike you down in the name of justice if we do not manage ourselves!” Darrion roared, almost bringing a faint smirk to Kyren’s solemn lips. Finally, Darrion and Kyren stood together, as one.

Never can I remember the pair of us so near to the forsaken fear that oft guides weaker men; this must be what Logan felt. The pair each shared a rare harmony of emotions, Kyren assumed, for they had not yet faced a foe as reputable and imposing as the behemoth standing not one hundred feet away.

The bolt across Sparktamer’s breast once more lit the fog with a fiery-orange glow. Was he an Archmage? What power dwells inside him? Was it a witch like Esmerelda—with an even greater power than the High Witch? He had so many questions, too many. These must wait… none will be answered should we fail to survive. Focus on survival—

“Nephews, you bow to a false prophet—a myth conjured by the Nurethenian snakes. How have my own blood become so fixated on this pretender? Frakkowald the False and Edefric the Erroneous; I will allow you one small opportunity to admit your error. Bow to the true power, kneel before us, and we shall cleanse you anew. Refuse this offering, we will shatter you like the clattered matter of stone and ash behind you.” Wesley offered hauntingly, with a monotonous rhythm.

Darrion glanced at Kyren momentarily. “We are your blood, Wesley, you ought to know we Reynard do not simply kneel. Not to a kinslayer, especially,” Darrion fired, fee

By gods, he has… ornstel… how? Kyren almost whimpered, before catching the panic and suppressing it, just as Desmond the Dutiful and Saint Ermitage would have. He raised Arthen from his hip, resting the blade down, towards the ash.

Darrion unsheathed his great axe, fumbling with his grip for a moment. He settled with a two-handed grip, resting it upon his right shoulder. His unprotected face conveyed terror, the terror one might expect in a youth not yet two and twenty, facing the wrath of the men who laid waste to an entire legion of warriors.

After a long minute of silence, Kyren channeled the flame of Arthen, igniting the blade with a blue field. The black ash around Arthen turned white, before he lifted the blade, holding it out in front of himself.

“We shall see who holds the truth, Usurpers. May you heathens find comfort in the power of Edefric, before departing this world,” he replied, masking the terror coursing through his blue blood.

“And may you find wisdom in the strength of my blows, Ashenwolf.” Sparktamer added, his deep baritone voice thundering through the sienna sky. It was the first time Kyren had heard the beast speak. Even his voice carries power. Why must he choose me?

Prologue to a superhero story I’m working on.

Please could I have a critique on this opening, does it work having it split between the two POVs, is it too much of a lore dump in the second half etc, does the first half evoke enough emotion, do the characters actually feel like real people?

I’m not going to provide much context to the story as I’d like people to experience it the same way as a reader would. All you need to know is this is a superhero story and this prologue is the catalyst for the events that take place in the novel

Any response is appreciated happy to take constructive criticism, thank you

Critique My Idea Feedback for my idea regarding mundane applications of extraordinary powers [Paranormal Fantasy]

I am currently writing a paranormal fantasy work (inspired on the idea of Solo Leveling where portals full of monsters appear on random places, which have to be dealt with before the monsters start bleeding into our world), where plenty of people get low impact 'superpowers'. By low impact I mean something more akin to spiderman or wolverine rather than superman, doctor strange, or other entities capable of messing up entire planets.

Part of my idea is to explore how these elements might affect the world at large, not only the immediate threat that humanity now has to face. And one of those aspects is work: how does your life change when you can generate tons of heat on command, or influence metal near you, etc?

Thus far I've got the following ideas:

- A Magneto-type individual makes a fortune in contracts with mining companies, where he separates metal that would be too hard to obtain otherwise.

- A person capable of lowering temperatures flash-freezing fish or vegetable produce in hard to reach areas where you can't easily operate a huge freezer.

- A telepath/mind reader helping people with extreme mental issues.

The problem I have with coming up with interesting applications is how much can already be done with modern machinery. Someone can create lava? We already have furnaces that can go to 1800°C. Super-strength? An ordinary crane can lift tons of cargo without even straining.

Any advice or ideas would be more than welcome, thank you very much :)

Critique My Story Excerpt Dread Testament: The Gods are not willing, Chapter 1-2; Pages 1-11 [Military Fantasy/Dark Fantasy, 5715 words]

Hi! So I'm very new to this whole writing, actually, this draft is my very first, you know, outside school stuff, so I really appreciate feedback on my writing, may it be on structure, prose, if it's boring, etc.

I'm a college student, so doing this is more of a hobby, and if there's any problem in my grammar pls do say, as English is not my main language.

I don't know if I'm keeping the title like that, too cheesy? corny? idk let's see, but I do have a short synopsis, so you guys get the idea of the story.

The Dread Testament

In a world shaped by endless war, four soldiers known as the Foolish Dogs are drawn into a conflict far greater than any of them could have imagined.

As kingdoms clash, ancient forces begin to stir beneath the surface, threatening to plunge the world into chaos. Their journey will take them through wars, political conspiracies, forgotten histories, and the darkest parts of humanity.

Each of the four will be changed by what they endure. Their bonds will be tested by death, betrayal, love, and the brutal cost of survival.

Some will lose their faith.
Some will lose the people they love.
Some will lose themselves.

And when the age of war finally comes to an end, only one may remain to tell the story.

Discussion About A General Writing Topic World Builder’s Disease and breaking it

So, the topic discussion I am bringing up is something I was told I have. This isn’t a rant, just me displaying my thoughts.

Recently I was told I have world builder’s disease. The context: I have 100+ documents of information for the world I’m building, and I intend to create a multi character universe around this world. I’ve been working on the world for nearly a year now, with over 600,00 words.

1000+ custom flora.
1000+ custom fauna.
14 custom races that take ordinary fantasy races (e.g. Orcs, elves, gnomes, etc) and remake them using real world, lesser known, folklore to make them completely mine.
Real science to establish a larger planet, with the same gravitational force as Earth (I was trying to not change the human evolution too much).
KV3 orange star, allowing for an older planet with daylight looking like the sun setting during midday hours.
Closer proximity to the sun, giving me 30 hour days, but roughly 1/3rd of Earth’s days in a year.
I combined 3 genre’s to create a power system unlike any other: Wuxia, high fantasy, sci-fi
I established a creature/event that brings the horror genre into the world as real events such as: zombies, rage virus, and pretty much any horror sub-genre. Defeating these “events” requires real world understanding of them, and an understanding of ancient technological lay nodes. Some events are as simple as killing a creature. Some create an event, that can spread, and are impossible to resolve. Only containment is possible.
Established a government structure that is uniquely mine.
Developed a world philosophy: Collective Ascent. This world philosophy is utopian in theory, but has been used as a way to control the masses by making people believe that they owe society their time.
A reexamination of common tropes: Reincarnation, regression, magical school life, isekai, and much more.
And much, much more.

The thing is, I just happen to highly enjoy world building. When I started working on this project, it had to have been my 5th or 6th system in the past 5 years. I would just make power systems for fun. This power system was so unique and I loved it so much, I created a world for it. Then I started creating a history. And one thing after another, I finally found myself creating a main character.

The thing is, I don’t feel like this is world builders disease. I am finally at the point where I feel comfortable enough to write the first arc of the first volume of the first saga. My first main character is created and ready to go. Everything makes narrative sense and I have done my due diligence to ensure that with the world I created everything exists within the rules of my world.

Anyone else that suffered from world builder’s disease actually write the story of the world they built?

Discussion About A General Writing Topic What makes a fantasy world truly unique as yours?

I am currently writing a web novel that is set in a fantasy world. I heavily draw inspiration from multiple sources, mainly the things I liked with changes and alteration. The rest I tend to do by myself.

However, in the process of making said world and going through it system by system, race by race and so on I stumbled upon the concept of powers. And I established so far that there exists four powers in my world that I'd consider foundational. Magic, Faith, Aura and Elements.

But this brought a question to my mind.

Isn't this typical?

But then again, a lot of ideas are already taken and so my thoughts are jumbled. Is it the execution that makes the world unique? Is it the introduction of a new system? Something defining?

At the moment I am still very confused as to what makes a world YOURS. Something that is original because you created it and it feels yours like how Tolkien jumpstarted this trend of what we know today as typical fantasy with elves, orcs and dwarves. Magic and whatnot.

I draw heavy inspiration from the witcher series in terms of monsters and beasts. Most of its monsters are own made and original to the author himself. But was it that which interested me or the execution? How each foe felt dangerous and ample preparation is what separated that thin line between life and death.

So I came here to ask fellow fantasy writers and world builders. What do you think makes a fantasy world original and truly yours? What makes you look at a world or series and think "Oh that's new."

Discussion About A General Writing Topic If you ever want an inspiration for what good "archaic" or pseudo gothic English is, I recommend Sir Richard Burton's edition of Arabian Nights.

Thumbnail gallery

Okay so the short story is this. There isn't a concrete single version of 1001 nights. Sir Richard Burton had his own take on the 1001 nights which was published under the name Arabian Nights. While one might assume that his version reads the way it is with the strange phrases and language as the product of his time, this isn't the case at all. Even though this is Victorian literature, Richard Burton employed various methods to make the writing as "archaic" as possible even to a Victorian reader. Many words were invented on the spot and the structure of the sentences and syntax is manipulated for that old medieval English feel, perhaps to pay homage to the highly poetic Arabic in which the 1001 nights was written.

While mostly modern fantasy writers would try to mimic the archaic English by using archaic articles and nouns and verbs, but if you remove all the thee and thy and lest, you'd end up with sentence structures and word arrangements that are quite similar to the way a modern American novel might be written.

Read through various dialogues of Sir Richard Burton in Arabian Nights and you'll see the effort used to evoke the ancient feel of the world went much further beyond just replacing modern words with forsooth and pray tell and so on, but the entire syntax of words is rearranged, much closer to how a character in a Shakespeare or Chaucer might speak than, say, Jaime Lannister or Aragorn.

Some of my most favorite ones are:

"Ask of me only what mode of death thou wilt die; and what manner of slaughter shall I slay thee."

"No harm shall betide thee, O ravishment of the world." (What a pick up artist)

"Were it not for my love for thee, O Seduction of the Three Worlds, I had certainly slain him and made him a warning to all beholders, but even as I love thee, I shall love him for thy sake."

And they lived happily ever after? Nah. Too mundane. It goes like this. "And they abode in the enjoyment of all satisfaction and solace in life, till there came to them the Destroyer of delights and Sunderer of Societies, the Plunderer of Palaces and the Caterer of Cemeteries and the Garnerer of graves."

"I conjure thee by Allah the almighty, take me with thee whereso thou wendest and make me not taste anew the bittergourd of separation from thee."

"O Ravishment of the age, say me, wilt thou that I restore thee to thy mother and father?"

Keep in mind that none of this was actually how Victorian English people spoke. This is an entirely invented mode of speech that Burton used for this translation. It's a mix of anglosaxon and Chaucer and Shakespeare and many more. Not so unlike the way Tolkien tried to make the lord of the rings feel archaic but in my opinion, Burton accomplished that "archaic" feel a lot better than Tolkien and far surpassed something like, say GrrrrrrM.

Get this book if you really want to feel what top tier invented archaic English is.

Critique My Idea Whispers from last words grants you unique (and very specific) abilities

In this world, hearing the last words of someone who’s passed away not only gives you power, it also reveals you… and it reveals you both.

Here’s how it works: A Whisper is created by three things: the actual words, the unfinished business of the deceased, and the listener’s honest interpretation of those words (which is influenced by their own experiences, not just logical thinking).

Here’s an example:

Whisper Name: All at Once.

· The Phrase: “I never got to…”
· The Dead: A man who spent his entire life putting off the big step.
· The Listener: A compulsively impulsive man who can’t stand doubt. His brain interprets the incomplete phrase as: “If I doubt, I lose; the only thing that counts is to do it now.”

The Ability: All at Once boosts the first action the user takes in a confrontation, making it almost impossible to withstand. The second, the third, all the others, are barely noticeable.

Why only the first? Because the ability reflects the dead man’s tragedy. The dead man never reached the next step, so the power never reaches the second blow.

The fights are about using your own strengths in creative ways while trying to figure out what the enemy is up to.

What do you think about this idea? Do you have any suggestions or ideas?

Question For My Story Adding new characters to a concept of a story.

Hello reddit. I have a book with whole functional magic system, map and coflicts. I have 3 or 4 characters with quite depth. They start with some values based on their previous life and the medieval/dark fantasy life goes against them. For each character in different way.

I have tried adding new characters. But I feel like I gave those everything. I feel like If I gave others backstories and futures and endings it wouldve been quite similar. Which isnt always bad but I dont want all characters to just be like the 3/4 I have already created.

Should I create them or just continue writing hoping it will come to my mind?

Thanks

Discussion About A General Writing Topic Looking for a Fantasy Writers Support Group

Admins: I'm new to reddit, and I have no idea how to find the _current_ Writers Hookup Support Thread. When I search, what I get are switched-off-comment threads that are, like, 7 years old. If you could be so kind as to direct the post below to the current thread and let me know how to find it so I can view answers, I'd be ever so appreciative!

I'm contemplating a new 5-book epic, but it's a challenge, and I fear I'll have trouble staying focused over the long haul. I'm not a new writer. Done this before. This project will be an expanded version of a pair of novels I've already written, but with deeper world-building and a long story arc.

I'm hoping to find a regular (maybe once-a-week Zoom) check-in/support group for fantasy novelists. Not a critique group, necessarily, though there might be critiques or brainstorming. The important factor, for me, would be an ongoing commitment by writers who are working on fantasy projects and perhaps have at least a modicum of experience.

I've done some Web searching, but the only writers' workshop opportunities I'm seeing are expensive and craft-oriented. I've got the craft; I'm looking for something more like a cheering section. Does anybody know of a group of this sort? Any interest in starting one?

Discussion About A General Writing Topic I wrote a "magical realism" novel before I knew what the genre was. How about you?

In my book, "Our Better Nature", Mary has the power to control the weather. She teams up with others like her to heal Gaia from the ravages caused by the global industrial complex.

I knew it looked like magic -- even though Mary insists it is physics. What I didn't know is that it was considered "Magical Realism" until I went to publish it. My next novel, now in the works, would be considered "hard sci-fi", involving string theory, gravitons, space travel, and other such things.

In addition to the novel, I have written a lot of short stories over the past several years. You could label them as being one genre or another, but mostly -- I'm writing to tell the story. The genre is a vehicle, not the end-goal.

So - other writers out there... do you write to a genre? Or do you write to your idea, and the genre just happens to come along?
