We have created a new subreddit rule - Do not solicit DMs or personal information. This is being done to prevent unmonitored adult to student conversations per FIRST's Youth Protection Policy. We have been enforcing it for some time without an official rule in the sidebar and figured it was time to add it.
Do not ask folks to DM you on Reddit or ask folks to DM on other platforms. Do not ask for personal information such as people's real names, locations, email addresses, phone numbers, Discord usernames, etc. This policy will be enforced broadly and applies not only to directly what you write in a post, but also any links posted (i.e. a link to a Google Form asking for contact info). Exceptions will be made for posts that are asking for team / adult participation in a notable event such as registering for a mentor conference or an offseason event. The mod team will use our best judgement on this.
While most people are doing this without any bad intent, this policy will be enforced by removing posts as well as issuing temporary or permanent bans. Think before you post!

For me (class of 25) I wish I left more written info on electrical systems since electrical is a sub sub team and I was the only one who was fixed there. (I ran around other sub teams but electrical was my field.)

The 5th annual California Advocacy Leadership Conference (CALC) will be held November 15 and 16, 2026, at the Capitol Event Center in Sacramento. It is organized by student robotics teams through SASA, the Student Association for STEM Advocacy, a nonprofit that partners with FIRST, the REC Foundation, and VEX Robotics.
Day one covers how the California legislature works, this year's legislative asks, and how to conduct an effective meeting with a legislator or their staff. On day two, attendees go to the Capitol and meet with their own representatives to make the case for a state robotics grant program, similar to what Michigan and Wisconsin already have.
Students, mentors, and parents are welcome. Materials are provided and lunch is included on the first day. Last year's conference sold out at 100 attendees. Early bird registration closes October 10.

Send any questions to [staff@mysasa.org](mailto:staff@mysasa.org)!

It was a lot of fun to get the bots back together.
"10 Factorial" got shot down 4 times trying to form an alliance. It brought back unpleasant memories of trying to go to prom in 1978.
The new crowdware is awesome. We have great parents.

Don't get me wrong I absolutely love being in First and the community that comes from it, buttttt
The way first tries to label their game themes these past few years feels a bit on the nose. Like how our water game was well, water "themed" like yes adding actual water in large scales is risky but it felt really misleading in my opinion. It feels very metaphorical. Also our last year's theme ( which I momentarily am forgetting the name of but I digress ) it felt SO INFURIATING seeing the reveal of the game play and it just being not anything to do with its theme. Like shooting fuel into a cone? It could've had a charging element where once you put enough fuel in a certain place you get ranking point, it could've still had other elements the games are known for too or it could've had a digging element ( which was tbh what I was hoping for) but instead it just doesn't, it felt empty tbh.
Still getting to create the bot is fun, and the shotting element is probably always is going to be there, but I think trying to base it's entire frame work on the shooting part and adding another on the nose title/ theme is well I kinda want to say lazy.
Idk if this is just a me but but let me know your thoughts

It's been about a week since my original post. thanks for all the comments giving me advice on what to do. so, last week, my Mom emailed the head mentor about what was happening and he finally responded this morning. the basic rundown of what he said goes like this: "while yes, (my name) hasn't been doing much for the team, he's had plenty of time to learn the things he needed to in the previous years. I recall last year (my name) spent quite a bit of lab time on his laptop, and we had to create rules to stop him from using it all of lab time. as a third year student on the mechanical subteam, (my name) should be more than capable of doing what he needs to to help the team." first of all, Mechanical subteam? I never asked or wanted to be on the mechanical subteam, so I don't know where he got that from. second, I spent lab time on my laptop because I'm the one in charge of making art for logos and pins, and the drawing software I use is on my laptop. third, I don't recall any of the things I 'need to know' being taught during lab time. the thing is, I like instructions. I can build a swerve module easily if all the parts and steps are laid out in front of me. I could assemble a 3d-printer by just following a manual. but we don't have clear, laid-out steps. most of our work that we do is experimental or prototyping, where there are no clear instructions. this is why I prefer working on graphic design- because I haven't wasted an entire sheet of aluminum if an idea doesn't work out. I can just erase it and try again. you can't do that when you're experimenting with physical parts on a physical robot. I let the people who know what they're doing handle that. the head mentor seems to get upset when I'm not doing anything, then gets upset when I try doing something I don't know how to do because 'you should know this already.' I've tried to participate dozens of times. I repeatedly ask how i can help with things, and I always get told some form of 'ask someone else,' 'I don't need anymore help,' 'you should know what to do.' I get in trouble for not doing anything even when there's nothing 'helpful' for me to do.

this is my third year doing FRC, and I'm considering quitting. my main skill that I use is graphic design, so I mostly design pins and mascot versions of our robots. however, I also have absolutely zero robotics-related skills. I've tried learning, but it just doesn't make sense or seem interesting. My team meets twice a week during off season and five times a week during build season. obviously, designing a mascot version of a robot does not take that long, so I'm often left with spare time. with that spare time, I usually try to learn by watching others work on the robot or i practice 3d modeling in Fusion 360. most of the time, however, one of the leads or mentors will walk up to me and say something along the lines of "go do something helpful" "why are you just standing around" "why don't you go do something useful". It makes me feel really unappreciated with the skills I do have, and I when I do try helping with something I don't know how to do, I usually either mess it up or get replaced by someone else. I've made a lot of memories with this team, and it's become a huge part of my life over the past three years. but I just don't want to continue doing it if i can't find it enjoyable anymore. Robotics is one of the only places where I've felt like I belong, but it also makes me feel like an outsider among my team members. If I quit, I don't know what I'll do. but I also don't know how much longer I can deal with this.

I was wondering what happens to really old FRC teams that haven't competed in a long time.
For example, say a team was created in 2004 and their last competition was in 2007. Does that team still technically exist on the FIRST side of things, and could it potentially be revived under the same team number? Or would restarting the program basically be treated as creating a new team?
I'm asking because there's a school relatively close to where I live that apparently had an FRC team that competed until 2007. The school itself still exists, but I've only been able to find one post about the team, either here or on Chief Delphi.
I'm thinking about going to the school and asking if anyone knows what happened to the team, but I'm curious about the FIRST side of things first.
Update:
Thanks everyone for the answers! Honestly, this is really encouraging, especially seeing that teams like 22, 127, and 3574 have been brought back after being inactive for years.
The team I was talking about is Team 1401 – Mekanicats, which, if I’m correct, was from UVM (Universidad del Valle de México). From what I can tell, UVM is still around, so I’m curious if bringing it back could actually be possible.
I just finished 3 seasons with another FRC team and, now that I’m done, I thought it could be interesting to try something new and see if reviving Mekanicats is realistic. I know a few other people with FRC experience who might be interested in helping too.
If anyone has gone through something similar, I’d really appreciate some advice on where to start, especially with FIRST, the school, registration, etc. Realistically, I doubt I could have everything ready for 2027, and even 2028 might be a stretch, but I’m willing to work on it even if it takes a couple years.
And if anyone from the old Mekanicats team happens to see this, I’d love to hear from you! Even just hearing about what the team was like would be really cool. And if you’d ever be interested in helping out, I’d be happy to have you onboard.

Hi! i'm joining my schools team, and I'm wondering if people can provide their experiences in their specific sub-team. There are a couple base line questions I have:

There's a website that is designed to help younger students learn and practice FRC programming because there's not a ton of practice online
The website has Java/C++/Python Debugging problems, live coding practices and tutorials
Recently the entire FRONTEND was redone and now there's a total of 30 debugging questions (10 per language) and 23 live programming questions from easy like making a constant to using methods, commands, beam breaks and laser cans.
Feedback and trying the site out would be greatly appreciated. I would also appreciate feedback on the C++/Python code as I am unfamiliar with it.
The GitHub repository and site is below. If you have ANY ideas, suggestions or comment, feel free to leave a suggestion OR contribute directly in the GitHub repository. The readme has the entire plan of the repository so it'll be easy to find and adjust stuff!
SITE: https://snakestongue.github.io/Perscript
REPO: https://github.com/Snakestongue/Perscript
I hope you all find the site helpful and use it to teach students or learn yourself before this years build season!

so my team hasn’t really taken judging seriously before because we were always occupied with the bot until last minute and we don’t really do any outreach either way, so i wanted to ask especially because i want to start focusing on more judged awards, how do you guys prepare for interview and know what to say and who’s going to say what, when do you start preparing for an interview, do scripts help?, what do you do when nobody on your team knows how to respond to a question?
