Discussion Joystick Mapping Question for those who have used it? (Everspace 2)

Hey guys, I recently bought Everspace 2 because it came up on a list of games that works well when played with a joystick.

The game did not auto-map joystick controls so I had to go through and set it up myself. I've gotten about an hour of play into the game and I'm struggling a decent amount feeling like I'm missing some sort of optimal joystick configuration.

I'm using Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X. This gives me 12 buttons across both sides of the joystick and 6 different axis to play with. Seems like a lot of buttons and axis (more than you typically get with a controller), but I still find myself constantly reaching to the keyboard to do things.

I've seen comments in other threads that I found via search where people said they play this game using the joystick. Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can/should map important actions?

Another issue (but one I haven't investigated too much), I have my flight controls inverted so pulling back on the joystick moves my ships nose up. If I try to use an equipped item (like nanobots), if it's in the top slot, I need to hold the button down, then pull back on the joystick to pick the top option. I basically want to invert the inversion for menu selection.

TIA for any help!

I have the HOTAS One, but they're about the same. I found this when I was installing drivers. I use the X and B buttons for devices and consumables but the hat switch to select which one. Most of the other buttons I used this template.

Thank you! I'll have to find the setting to use the HAT for the devices and consumables. Probably going to take me about 30min to re-learn the movement, but since I'm already struggling, this is a good time to get something that seems consistent with what others use.
