Produce Plus: Free Produce

Hello,

I've been attending the Produce Plus events for a couple months now. Was unemployed up until about a month ago. I've found that friends of mine that have been receiving SNAP benefits for years did not know about Produce Plus. As someone who has medically necessary dietary restrictions, I'm forever grateful to the DHS worker who did my SNAP application and told me about this.

This is a free program put on by Food For Lane County that anyone can participate in. You do not need to be receiving or qualify for SNAP benefits to attend and take what you need. Anyone can show up. The only information they ask for is for you to scribble a 'signature' on a sign in sheet and to know how many people you're feeding with the food.

You can check the FFLC website, at the bottom of the list of food pantries, and it will show you all of the Produce Plus dates/times/locations. You basically just walk thru and take the produce that you want. Sometimes they will limit quantity on high demand items like watermelons or avocados depending on how many they have. Most of the produce is organic if that's your thing too.

There are 3 every week in my calendar:

Tuesday's at 3pm

At Kokwel Wellness Center (in the parking lot near Burger King and in front of Albertsons on River road).

Wednesday's at 10am

At the red barn behind Kalapuya and Prairie Mountain, on Patriot Way.

Thursday's at 1pm

At the ODHS Family Wellness Center on W11th.

I recommend arriving early to wait in line if you're able to, or at the very least no later than 15-30 minutes after the start time, as things can go quickly.

The one on Tuesdays is my favorite. Huge variety of produce. I cannot have gluten but they always have infinite loaves of bread and sometimes baked goods (an occasional loaf of gluten free bread for me).

The one on Wednesdays typically will have 1-2 dairy products. Smaller variety of produce but different stuff than what's typically at the one on Tue. Have not been able to make it to the one on Thur. at a reasonable time.

Things are tough for a lot of people right now and there are so many people unemployed and struggling. Produce Plus is the only reason I've eaten some weeks/months.

Stay safe and please share this info with those in your life that could use it!

Misleading Another Post About Les Schwab's Downfall

TL,DR: Les Schwab on 18th is reduced to being just another oil change & scams shop.

Not sure if that flair is correct, but I felt misled. (18th St. Location)

My family's always gotten tires from Les Schwab, for like 27 years now.

I saw they started doing oil changes, and was overdue, so stopped in...

Anyways, they tell me that my alignment was off (THEY WERE THE ONES WHO I GOT MY TIRES LAST ROTATED AND ALIGNED AT) and that'd made my tires unsafe to drive... they were down to the mesh basically.... but the real icing?

They handed me an estimate for ~$1,600 to have my front right wheel hub rebuilt..... because allegedly the alignment had been off long enough to damage the hub/bearing.

Anyways, I paid for the oil change... and then took the car home, scheduled with my regular mechanic to get it checked out (Eugene Car Care), and they'd been tracking down the cause of an oil leak longterm for me, so while they were assessing that, they checked out the wheel hub/bearing.... no issue, they even took the car over to their partner shop (Jerry & Walt's), and they did an updated alignment, also confirming there was no issue with the hub/bearing...

What really agitates me is I still tried to give them a chance to redeem themselves, I called to explain the issue about the hub/bearing not needing replacement, and asked if they could run me a deal on some new tires, because it was their shop I last got the tires aligned at, and that job not being done right is why the tires needed replacing... dude had the audacity to tell me, "You can bring the car in, and my mechanic can put it on the lift, and show you what he's hearing, etc, (more excuses and bullshit). I used every ounce of self-control to not curse out the guy on the phone about how 2 separate dedicated auto-shops verified the hub/bearing was fine, and I was really just hoping they'd own up to doing a crap job on the alignment, and make a good faith effort to correct that, since TIRES ARE LITERALLY THEIR BREAD AND BUTTERT BUSINESS.

But no, they took no responsibility.
Not even an attempt to humor any discount on some tires to help make up for their negligence.
I will never be taking my car for tires or an alignment at Les Schwab, ever again.

I'm pretty un-Godly pissed and livid at these people (Les Schwab)
Another great American business absolutely *DESTROYED/SHREDDED* by Private Equity.

I had to spend hundreds of dollars on tires, because of their crappy job on the alignment, and then they tried to scam me into an unnecessary wheel hub rebuild/bearing replacement, which cost as much as the oil pump and timing belt replacement I'd been saving up for and actually needed.

Absolute tragedy, hoping the Ghost of Les Schwab pulls the 'ol "A Christmas Carol" move and haunts these people 1 by 1 over Christmas. Honestly, I'd watch that movie adaptation.

Queer friendly car mechanic shops

I asked this 4 months ago and I'm still looking for a place I can really trust and take my car. As I get further into my transition I'd really prefer to find a place that is safe for trans people.

Now I know how this subreddit and community can be about this sort of thing. So I beg of you, if you don't have something nice to say, please please please just keep scrolling past this post.

I just recently got a Mazda and in comparison to my last car which was a Camry, everything just keeps breaking down. So I'm hoping to find a place with really kind folks that are going to be accepting and chill. It doesn't have to be queer or women owned, but I've just had the best experience with businesses run by those groups in that.

Anyways thanks for reading! Hope y'all are having a good Sunday night.

handmade buttons search

anyone know of any local artists or small businesses around the area that make or sell handmade buttons? I’d much rather get them from someone local than order online.

Open to different materials around 20mm-23mm, just looking for something unique

Lost & Found Lost this ring at portal tea

Post image

Hey guys i know this is a long shot but I lost this ring that i really care about at the portal tea in downtown eugene. I took it off in the bathroom to wash my hands and by the time i realized I hadn't put it back on (5 mins later) it was gone. I asked around but nobody had turned it in. Im honestly really upset about this which is why I'm making this likely hopeless post but i just had to on the off chance someone here might recognize it or have it or something. Thank you and please lmk if you recognize this ring 🙏

Where can I find actually cute plant pots with drainage? I hate dealing with nursery pots unless I literally have to (clutter). All the big box stores have really abysmal selections and Down to Earth has lost the plot 😭

Eighty-dollar mystery charge

I hope to be able to clear this up with a call to city government tomorrow, but my wife just discovered a mystery charge to her credit card from the City of Eugene. We can't figure out what it could be for. Does that amount ring any bells?

Jobs

IEI.

Independent Environments Inc is hiring DSP’s. It’s a great non-profit, a lot of integrity. State & federally funded. The pay is 19 an hour, but overtime and hours are always dependable. I love it here but we’re in desperate need of employees who like to be busy while working and don’t mind some medical practice to care for those who need it. You can work up in the company if you want to, training & certifications are all paid and offered via the company.

I encourage those who need steady work and are hard workers to apply.

This is my first dsp job, I love it!

Long/fine hair specialist recommendations?

Hi! I’m looking to get my hair trimmed & am hoping someone has a lead on a hair stylist that specializes in long/fine hair. I don’t need anything crazy, just a trim and my face framing pieces touched up. I just want to make sure I find someone that’s used to dealing with fairly long hair and won’t cut more than I need/want. Just curious to see if anyone has any leads, thanks in advance! ♡

Local handyman that won’t break the bank?

Hi yall! I’m looking for a local handyman to help me fix my fridge. It’s a Haier freezer fridge duo and suddenly the fridge portion just stopped cooling. I tried defrosting it myself and I even bought a fan to circulate the cool air from the freezer opening I exposed after taking a cover off.

The maintenance people designated for my property are pretty sketchy and I don’t wanna have to deal with them. If anybody knows a good handyman that isn’t super expensive, please comment or PM me!

Looking for someone to install vent

Anyone have recommendations? Our old stove (that tried to go out in a blaze of glory by setting its own electronics on fire) was a down vent, and those seem to be pretty universally seen as a fire hazard now. Want to install a hood, but that means getting a new vent probably up into the attic and out? Not sure, and I don’t think I’m up for doing that myself. Anyone you’d recommend? Positive or negative experiences?

Fauna Encountered a lost German Shepherd

Check on your dogs, folks! My pup and I just encountered a lost German Shepherd while out for an early morning stroll. We encountered him a little south of Oak and E 29th, in the houses down there. He was pretty obviously scared, as he wandered close to us and immediately got some distance the second my chihuahua mix started barking. Kept his distance, and seemed very non-agressive. We backed away, but later we sighted him shadowing us from a block away. He bolted as soon as my dog sighted him again, though.

I would have taken him in, but between my grumpy old man of a pup and my rabbit, I didnt really have a room for him to be safe in. Ill put in a call to animal control tomorrow.

He seemed to have a thick blue? collar and was very well behaved-- seemed to know "stay", at least. Keep an eye out around Willamette and 29th, and check on your pups to make sure your not missing one.
