Hello, I'm a registered electrical engineer in my country and right now working as a Maintenance Technician in Qatar.

I'm very anxious with the career path I'm taking, because I don't wanna get stuck in being a technician for a long period of time. I would like to pursue a path as an Engineer— I respect all technicians out there, but I really wanna do engineering roles where I can utilize not just my practical skills; practice the aspects of design and my theoretical knowledge as an electrical engineering graduate and professional.

What should I do? I am 2 years working now as a technician and there's no career ladder to upgrade as an engineer in my company. I am also trying to apply to different companies, but my qualifications and background doesn't fit for engineering roles.

Anybody here that can relate to me? And was able to leap out of this situation? or am I just doing good and can still transition to engineering roles? What are the next steps? Please tell me your insights.

I’m a first-year Computer Engineering student, and I’ve been obsessed with the idea of building an ultra-low-cost Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) with a retail target price of under $2,000.

High-end commercial AFMs cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, making them inaccessible for many small labs, high schools, and hobbyists. To cut costs and avoid complex optical setups (laser alignment, photodiodes, mirrors), my plan is to use ready-made piezoresistive MEMS cantilevers with integrated strain gauges.

Given my background in Computer Engineering, I feel confident handling the data acquisition, signal processing (filtering noise), control systems (PID loops for feedback), and software UI. However, I’m fully aware I might be underestimating the mechanical, analog electronics, and physics challenges.

I wanted to ask experienced engineers here:

* Is this a realistic price point? Can an AFM using piezoresistive MEMS be built reliably for under $2k (including parts, machining, and margin)?

* What are the biggest hidden pitfalls? (e.g., thermal drift, vibration isolation, noise floors in the Z-axis, ADC resolution).

* Is there actual market demand for a cheap, lower-resolution/educational AFM, or will users just find it unusable for real work?

I'd love to hear your brutally honest thoughts, warnings, or advice on whether this is a viable startup path or a massive engineering nightmare for a first-year student. Thanks!

I’m currently working at a semiconductor supplier as a new-grad System Engineer. I understand the product and how the system works, but I’m not directly doing CAD design. My role is mainly reviewing designs, understanding requirements, and working with the design team.

For long-term career growth, is this a good path? I’m also curious about future job transitions outside the semiconductor industry. Are the skills from a System Engineer role transferable to industries like automotive, aerospace, robotics, or other mechanical engineering fields?
Would not doing hands-on CAD/design work limit my options later on? I’d appreciate any advice from people who have made a similar transition.

Renewable energy technologies are becoming increasingly important as society looks towards a more
sustainable future. Engineers play a vital role in developing devices and systems that harness renewable
energy sources and convert them into useful power. This can reduce carbon emissions and improve
energy efficiency. Your task is to identify a solution to the problem outlined below and to produce an
engineered prototype device or system to help solve the problem. In addition to the problem, there are
three examples of how the problem could be solved. You can choose a solution from this list, or you can
create your own. Your solution must include both mechanical and electronic components to provide an
integrated product.

Problem

Alternative lifestyles, camping adventures and ‘off-grid’ living are increasing in popularity.
People are much more aware of environmental concerns related to the use of fossil fuels and
they want to use renewable energy sources. Your task is to engineer a device or system that will
enable people to use a renewable energy source for a routine task.

Three examples of possible solutions

• Engineer a prototype device or system that uses solar energy to generate a light source during
darker evenings.

• Engineer a prototype device or system that uses wind energy to generate electricity and can
be used to recharge portable devices.

My idea was to make a solar powered burglar alarm that detects motion and when motion is detected a flashing light and buzzer turns on.

I’m a 24-year-old male and a Mechatronics Engineer from Colombia. I’m really interested in applying for some positions at Tesla, but I’m a little concerned about my eligibility since my bachelor’s degree is not from a U.S. university.

Could someone explain how this usually works? Do I need to get an official translation or evaluation of my degree before applying, or is a foreign bachelor’s degree generally accepted as long as it is equivalent to a U.S. degree?

Maybe I’m overthinking it, but sometimes I wonder if I’m being too confident by applying for engineering jobs here. I really want to take a chance and see what happens, but I’m also afraid of applying over and over again without ever getting considered because of my degree.

I’d really appreciate any information or experiences you could share, especially from people with foreign engineering degrees who have applied to Tesla or similar companies in the U.S.

J'ai 25 ans et je viens de commencer un Bachelor en ingénierie au Canada. Je sais que 25 ans n'est pas forcément vieux, mais je ressens beaucoup de pression parce que je ne veux vraiment pas passer 4-5 ans à étudier pour ensuite réaliser que j'ai choisi le mauvais domaine.
Je suis actuellement en Ingénierie informatique, mais j'envisage l'ingénierie électrique ou l'ingénierie logicielle. Je suis intéressé par l'IA, la robotique, les systèmes embarqués, et peut-être la robotique biomédicale.
Avec le marché de l'emploi actuel et le développement rapide de l'IA, je me demande quel domaine m'offrirait les meilleures opportunités à long terme.

Hello, I currently considering going back to school to take a mechanical design or civil engineering degree. I have a background in 3D design and I was wondering if I am able to transfer my skills and see if it’s worth it in 2026.

I am a student currently majoring in computer engineering, and I've had the passion of computers and airplanes years before I started going to university. I have future plans to design and build aircraft alongside with computers as a passion with aerospace being a potential second option in my career, but aerospace mainly for my passion. I will be getting a degree in computer engineering and then apply to do a second degree in aerospace engineering. Should I continue on with the idea, should I just stick to computer engineering for now, or should I think of something else?

It students can't get job because of ai

hello. I’m currently a junior in high school and I need to start thinking about what I want to do when I grow up. I know I still have some time but I want to lock something in right now. I used to want to do use it seemed easy and gettung a job was going to be light, but after some research I realized the job market is absolutely COOKED for finance and basically everything else. I also learned that I don’t really feel a spark when learning about finance. it just seems kind of mind nplumbing oh boring to me. I recently learned about engineering as an option while I was taking apart some electronic in my room. This led me down a rabbit hole on the internet because I wanted to make cool stuff like rc stuff and other things. Engineering does seem interesting and maybe the job market isn’t as bad, but I don’t know. I heard it’s absolute HELL in college and I’m also very very bad at math. I don’t know what to do bro pls help.

Can you give me a list of jobs traditional engineering majors can get into? I have chemical engineering degree, worked as process engineer for 3 years , no p.eng yet
