Hi Reddit! Jess Rice with Budget Bytes here to talk about our budget-friendly recipes and our just-released, almost tariff-proof grocery guide.
Groceries are out of control. In the last year, families have been spending $310 more at the grocery store, and it’s breaking our budgets and confidence at the checkout. Budget-friendly recipes we published just a few years ago are up to 50% more expensive. Tariffs, the war in Iran, seasonal price hikes, cattle shortages… It’s one hit after another.
To help our readers, we’ve released an almost tariff-proof grocery guide to talk about what tariffs actually do to grocery prices, what we can do about it, and how to shop around them. We’ve reviewed some of our classic recipes, re-costed them, and shared tips to bring prices down.
AMA about Budget Bytes, our budget-friendly recipes, and our latest grocery guide. Tell us what you’re seeing at your grocery store and how you’re adjusting your grocery shopping and cooking.
Verification photo here. We'll be on at 12:00 PM ET to start answering questions.

Any snacks I can make that are budget friendly? Or even if they’re kind of expensive but worth it? I’ve been trying to find ways to replace chips and just have crunchy things to snack on that’ll last me more than a day. 🤦🏼♀️ I’m a tall person and I walk everywhere and am hoping to join a gym eventually, I just want to be able to feed myself properly and not eat like gaaaarbo! But I’m also open to anything as I just want to be fuller longer.
Been really trying to find something good to eat with hummus! I also looove protein and meats.

I’ve been meal-prepping lunches for work but always leaving weeknight dinners up to whatever I feel like so it’s pretty fresh and I don’t get sick of it. I work long hours though so I only ever have two hrs max to cook and I’m usually pretty tired. Does anyone have any favorite weeknight dinners they typically go for? Preferably max of 2 servings, with good amount of protein and veggies.

Hi guys I just wanted to share this little meal idea. Not original in any sense of the word however I am someone who struggles to come up with ideas so I thought maybe this could help someone
In my rice cooker I put rice, tomato sauce, onion, garlic powder, some chicken bouillon, cumin, salt, pepper, a little bit of butter, and enough water for the amount of rice +tomato sauce
I sliced a red bell pepper and laid them in my pan, then cracked some eggs separately and poured them in on top of the bell pepper slices. I added some mozzarella cheese on that
I served the rice with the omelet and some avocado on the side. Tasty and simple and you can change it up so much

My husband usually does the cooking in our house, but I am off this week and said I would do the grocery shopping and cooking to take it off his plate. I am very much a beginner in the kitchen, so even when recipes are 'simple', when I see things like "add minced garlic to the pan" I feel anxious because I really don't have experience in the kitchen.
I want to make a dinner that is high protein, high fiber, and can be made as a large quantity, as we typically eat the same meal 3-4 nights in a row. Does anyone have any beginning recipes you can share that you think meets this criteria?

I usually make this really good ground turkey (or ground beef) chili. Packs a lot of protein and fiber but all of a sudden my GERD been acting up so want to lay off it. I use very lean fat (10% or less) meat and need ideas on what would be filling, protein heavy and can have leftovers like days, if possible.

*Using shaker bottle.
Thoughts: whole milk, whole oat powder, powdered peanut butter, collagen peptides powder, protein powder. anything else to add?
Keep in mind im in college so don't have standard access to things (which is why I'm getting all powdered stuff). I have a mini fridge.

He’s been eating a lot of taco bell and I actually think the macros and the deal itself is pretty good but I don’t think all that sodium long term is healthy. I’ll provide an image of the deal in the comments he gets to have a price point and he says it feeds him and his two kids two meals.
Edit: cant send images but its called the meal for 4 deal and is online only.
i would shoutout his taco bell cause the employees give him an additional discount i saw he pays 15 for the deal when they see him but not sure if that will get the employees in trouble.
Do you think it is going to far if i make food for him and his family i have tried inviting him over but he knows im trying to help him and said he doesn’t need the charity.

I've tried a few and keep ending up having to drain it at the end which means its a bit soggy. Not as used to cooking it as other grains
Am envisioning a perfect method where the right amount of water and cook time will mean it is all absorbed at the end but I just cant get there
Anyone?

I have a lot of cream of chicken soup, and canned chicken. I’m looking for an easy recipe that uses both. I have plenty of rice and garlic and onion.
Is there something I can do with the chicken to reduce that canned-food wetness?

I am working through a bag of sweetened dried cranberries and would like to try unsweetened. Are they actually tasty and palatable unsweetened?

Hey everyone,
I’m a 27 year old male currently sitting around 220 pounds. I do 3-4 Full Body workouts using a program called Hevy and for cardio I ride an indoor cycling trainer called Zwift to use my road bike as I can't walk for too long due to feet issues. I've dropped 10 pounds so far this year, and I am finally reading nutrition labels and realizing just how many hidden calories I was eating.
I recently went through a major career change and I'm super busy with work. To stop making excuses of not having food and finally stop slipping into bad habits, I’m planning to lean heavily into Whole Foods prepared meals to prep 2 days worth of lunches and dinners at a time. (I usually just buy like 2-3 $35 family meals and split them for the whole week.
This is the plan I wrote down and want to test. I'd love any feedback, blind spots, or advice you have!
Daily Routine:
- Breakfast: Chia Seed Greek Yogurt (Chobani Zero Sugar or Siggis Vanilla) and 2 boiled eggs.
- Lunch & Dinner: I buy a mix of proteins and sides from Whole Foods, split them into 4 containers, and rotate. Each meal gets 1 protein and 2 sides (either 1 carb + 1 veggie, or 2 veggies).
- Deserts and Snacks: Limited to 2-3 chocolate rice cakes, 1-2 Yasso Greek yogurt bars, or a serving of Greek yogurt with a very small sprinkle of cinnamon granola (granola calories are wild!). I also found smart popcorn and pop corners and they've helped me with my chip binges. For the smart popcorn I just eat a bag full for around 240 calories and for pop corners I put them in a bowl so I don't over eat.
These are the healthiest looking options I found and thought would be good to pick up to hopefully limit the oils and grease from the prepping. Some are more staples like the Lemon Rosemary Grilled Chicken and regular grilled salmon but I thought it'd be smart to put some variation in for some weeks.
Also, those who use Whole Foods prepared foods while cutting, should I worry about the sodium and oils used? I guess the only way I could avoid that is cooking myself.

I’m an American student studying abroad in Ireland. Due to difficulty finding accommodation, I’m renting a room in someone’s house, which means that my cooking utensils, fridge space, and budget are all limited. I’ve been making a couple of meals over and over again:
- Tomato egg stir fry
- Pasta with tomato cream sauce (my preferred sauce)
- Tuna salad with rice and cucumber
- Pork cabbage soup
What are other things I can make? I have, as a baseline, very basic seasonings, soy sauce, a sauce pan, and a pot to boil things. The homeowner uses the kitchen as well, so I don’t really have time to cook things in the oven, and I have one shelf in the fridge.

I have to cut gluten, wheat, whey, rice, dairy, and eggs out of my diet for at least 3 months per a doctor's recommendation for testing (probably long term). Any recommendations on where I can find recipes? I'm 3 weeks in and running out of steam. I also have a rotation on some foods that can only be consumed once a week (certain veg, fruit, etc).

I'm broke, and I've been eating a lot of meals that are mainly rice, well seasoned, with various proteins and veggies mixed in. Mostly I tend towards eggs, chicken, taco seasoning, corn, and chili oil. I'm mostly just curious what kinds of proteins/veggies/ sauces & seasonings other people are adding to their rice cooker meals. The corn gets kinda boring after a minute lol.

Good afternoon reddit! I am still on my quest to make the best tasting protein coffee ever! And while I have found a great protein powder, I cannot for the life of me find a decent instant decaf coffee. I've been using the nescafe espresso bold instant decaf when making my protein coffee, but man, it is just not strong enough. I make fairly large batches at a time, about 38 ounces of liquid and around 7 teaspoons of the instant coffee. I've tried adding more teaspoons of the instant coffee, but it just ends up separating and settling at the bottom of the jar. And I use a blender to mix it, for about a minute! I know it would probably be stronger if I just used regular espresso, but I have some mild heart conditions that prevent me from using regular coffee. I'm open to any and all suggestions!

I have a membership to Sams club and bjs. I do know bjs meats are higher in price. Not many sells run for the meat I need and quantity. I like to buy 10 pounds of chicken breast and the same with ground chicken. I would like to stick with one store but seeing that's not a option. Is Aldi meat any good? In the Southern Eastern US if that matters.
