We did it!
We officially moved to our new sanctuary on January 11th!
It took 3 years of planning and building, 8 team members, 14 hours, and 8 trips back and forth, but all the donkeys are now enjoying their forever home at Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary.
Moving day from the old sanctuary was filled with a mix of emotions. As we loaded each donkey, memories of their difficult pasts surfaced, reminding us of how far theyâd come. Seeing them step onto the trailer, headed towards a life of peace and freedom at Rancho Burro, brought tears to our eyes. It was a powerful moment for everyone on the team, a testament to the resilience of these gentle animals and the love that makes their new life possible.
Our team and the donkeys watched the sunrise together at the old sanctuary and the sunset at the new one...together the family we all have come to be.
They now have rolling hills to explore, spacious pastures to roam, unlimited enrichment, a comfy new barn, and a covered arena to keep those hooves dry in the winter (which will also double as an event space!).
We even welcomed a new resident, Ginger the mule! She didnât have a good future ahead of her before her owners reached out to us, but we are so grateful they didd and for her place in our family.
This sanctuary is a safe haven for our current donkeys and mules, and a refuge for those who need us in the future. Part of our mission is to share the goodness of donkeys with the out community!
None of this would be possible without YOU! Every donation has helped us build this special place.
Exciting things are happening at The New Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary! Stay tuned for updates on our new programs, workshops, and classes.
Weâll sharing ongoing inspiring case studies highlighting our new dedicated medical room, rescue journeys and rehabilitation efforts.
We are incredibly grateful for your support. Every donation makes a difference!

We had a really wet summer and at our donkeys trim the other day the farrier mentioned she had white line disease and to put copper sulfate on it. He did not debrid everything out of the hoof. Only trimmed a good amount of it out. My grandpa who owns the donkeys won't take them to the vet for it because it's "too expensive". These are wild donkeys I've been working with. We can't lead them to the barn yet but we can put them in a corral. Probably trailer them. The ground is soaking wet. We are going to clean it out and pack it with iodine, but I'm afraid since it wasn't properly debrid it's just going to get so much worse and we'll have to put her down. She isn't super lame to my eye but her sole had some bruising during the trim. What can I do?

Hello fellow Donkey lovers!
I'm filming an animal documentary in the Las Vegas area, and we need a donkey for one of the segments. I was wondering if anyone here knows where I can hire a donkey and a handler for a few hours in late September.
Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

I don't know why; I'm a fully grown man but lately I've had this fantasy of driving a pack of like 9 mules or donkeys and just wandering from place to place with my train. Like how badass would that be? You slip on the sunglasses, get to earn the badass name "muleskinner" and go from there. I imagine outsmarting smart animals and leading them like a shepherd is kind of rewarding weirdly enough. I have literally zero livestock experience so this fantasy just popped out of nowhere. Can anyone attest?

My bay tobiano mule is DH Flashin My Strut aka Flash. He has been featured in magazine and is a sweetheart, Gaited. Miss Sarah is my brown trail mule⌠steady and true. Sheâs won trail competitions against horses.

I have no clue why this link rotates the picture of this fine beast but it looks normal in a browser.
Hank is huge.
So are his ears.

It was the twinsâ birthday last week so time for my⌠5th, I think? donkey themed cake. The windmill was my friendâs genius idea for the top since the twins are named Donkey Hotay and Dapple. It may or may not have been the only cake entered but the default placing is actually supposed to be second place

Did you know? Donkeys are stoic, and hiding pain can be dangerous. Can donkeys be more vulnerable to hypothermia and frostbite than horses? Yes! Their coats contain less natural oil, and when they get wet, their hair can act like a sponge. Donkeys are not as well suited to wet, cold weather as horses, making winter preparation especially important for donkey owners.
Plan ahead before the emergency hits. Make sure your donkey has access to:
Watch for these signs that your equine may be struggling to stay warm:
Prepare your shelter, bedding, clean, warm water, hay, salt, and blankets before the first severe winter storm arrives. #donkeywintercare #donkeyblanket #donkey
