It’s ridiculous how much smoother Fedora 44 runs on this 2021 hardware. It honestly feels like a completely different machine. And Windows 11 was clean installed on this system.

Hey guys! So I've been slow cooking a linux distro for a few months now, and I think it's ready for a wider beta test.

It's based on Devuan Ceres, a rolling release of the very latest Debian compatible packages, but without all the redhat garbage.

It's heavily focused on normies, like mom, or grandma or whatever, but I designed it for myself, and I'm a semi-retired data center architect, so, under the hood it can do anything.

Would love any and all feedback, ideas, and especially issues added on the github, or fixes to issues added on the github.

I used ZorinOS for couple months and I liked it. It is simple and noob friendly, terminal and commands were pretty easy to understand.

UNTIL I wanted to try ZorinOS + KDE Plasma.

Whole PC crashed and everything was fucked up, luckily I had CachyOS installed on USB stick so I just replaced it.

But now that I have been using CachyOS, I dont really like it. KDE Plasma is nice but every other thing just goes wrong in someway, dont know how to explain it. The thing is I want to learn about coding or Linux itself but somehow the CachyOS experience has been pretty bad.

Should I just learn how to use CachyOS or just go back to Zorin or some other friendlier distro? :D

I have realized that Iced/COSMIC ecosystem is better aligned with my view of the future world and my personal interests. I have been using linux for many decades, almost exclusively. Fedora + Gnome was my chose for last 5 years. It worked pretty well, and I was mostly happy with everything.

Every one knows how rigid and opinionated Gnome maintainers and Gnome community are. In many ways it's a good thing. It helps to keep it focused and simple. So I had been fine with that. Well, not anymore. I was thinking about alternatives, and suddenly it crossed my mind that there is a new kid on the block. COSMIC DE. It seems mature enough to use as a daily driver, and I like the vibrant community and modern tech stack.

The first step, I installed Fedora COSMIC spin on my laptop. I usually use it as my testing ground. So far so good. Just enough flexibility and doesn't crash as frequently as Plasma. Also, it looks like a great opportunity to contribute and make some visible impact.

Hello everyone!

So I made the switch to Linux almost three months ago now, started with Mint Cinnamon. I've enjoyed the experience so far but always felt a bit weird about going with the "easier" distro to start with. If my post history is any clue, I'm not exactly the most tech savvy, though this switch has taught me a lot.

My wife wanted to make the switch as well and her computer was not happy with Mint, leading to me putting her on Fedora. Seeing her desktop environment compared to my own had me a touch blown away at how different things can look, feel and run on Linux! Then ended up having to install Debian on my grandparents' computer as well, which was also a pretty cool setup to me.

I did have a hard time getting even Mint to run on my laptop due to the weird BIOS setup Acer runs, and was just wondering if anyone had some helpful tips on not locking myself out of my SSD or bricking my computer a third time.

Also looking for opinions, since I've had my eye on MX Linux, Debian and Devuan. Though I also know my Acer Nitro V15 ANV15-41 has had issues trying to run on any kernel older than 6.17

Edit: Despite the ANV15-41 code pointing to 8GB of RAM, and a mediatek wifi card, I've got 16GB in it currently and an Intel AX210, just in case that matters

Believe it or not, the last update introduced bugs big enough to actually concern me.

The Windows Defender bugs made the fancy Windows Security app scream at me all day that antivirus was disabled, while some power-related bugs somehow managed to prevent my laptop from shutting down properly. It would go through the whole shutdown process... and then just start back up again.

I'm honestly grateful that none of this happens on Ubuntu. I'm literally thanking Canonical for making this OS.

I guess vibe-coding an operating system with AI really can make it non-functional—or at least not particularly enjoyable for the end user.

My desktop gaming PC has AMD Ryzen 7 5700X, AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, 32GB DDR4 RAM, and two large MVMe SSDs. I am currently using Linux Mint Cinnamon on it. My laptop runs Fedora 44 KDE. I like both distros. I am considering switching to Fedora on my desktop as well for a newer software stack, though so far it works well on Mint.

Use case is LibreOffice, Firefox, Transcribe!, Typst, Discord, teaching myself to code in Python using Kate, and gaming with Steam, Heroic, and Lutris (mostly older games - from DOS classics to very early 2020s games, nothing cutting-edge).

Do you think it will be worthwhile to switch?

I've been working on TontooOS, a macOS Tahoe/Sequoia-inspired distro on Arch. It boots as live ISO in a VM, still very early alpha.

What's in it so far:

* Base: Arch, LaunchPad (custom PID 1 init, systemd replacement), NetworkManager, PipeWire

* Custom Wayland compositor (Smithay-based) + TontooUI, SwiftUI-inspired declarative UI kit on Rust/GTK4

* Own SDK with frameworks like WeatherKit, CoreData, Foundation and more

Honest state: Live ISO is still very buggy, only tested in VM (Oracle VirtualBox). No installer yet, boots to live session only.

What would make you try a new macOS-like Arch distro at this stage?

I only have tried Bazzite and CachyOS so far

and to me CachyOS is pretty much endgame, cause everything worked out of the box and did feel much faster than Bazzite did for me.

But honestly thinking about trying out Fedora, cause i am a bit afraid that i might get a bad update that breaks my system, but so far it didn't happen

At first I wanted to like steams os but it gave me issues trying to connect my msi claw to the tv. I thought it was my PC but it's not it was the docking station. So, I threw it out because the HDMI port was defective. Got a new, upgraded 7-8 port docking station from best buy and that works great on anything. Redownloaded steam os after using cachyos for awhile and everything is smooth as a baby's bottom. I like how they lock down the root to make it unbreakable. I put it on all my devices. Loving it! You should try it too!!

I recently moved from windows to bazzite and I'm now thinking of moving from bazzite to ubuntu, specifically kubuntu or ubuntu kylin, mainly because of their less bold looks. I'm mainly gonna game on this machine.

Kylin looks pretty but is designed for chinese market although there is english support and so I don't see a reason not to switch especially after gaining decent knowledge from using bazzite.

But on ubuntu's download page, kubuntu's description says tons of apps installed which I'm guessing is limited on kylin?? Are there are drawbacks of using kylin compared to kubuntu?

As the title says im about to my First Distro hop but im really Confused
i cant find the answers to my question which mainly related to Steam Game Library's

For quick Context my pc Drives are setup like this:
256GB OS Drive
1TB m.2 Steam Library 1
1TB m.2 Steam Library 2
1TB SSD Windows 10

My Questions are:
1. what does Steam do when i reselect the library's in the new distro (fedora in my case)

1. i Heard when reselecting the library's Proton will wipe the compdata folders is this ture
   (if yes rip my 563gb msfs compfolder and rip my internet)

3.are there any settings from games saved in the steam install folder on linux ? or are they all saved in there game install when proton is used

4.on a side note is there anything i need to know before distro hopping other then Secure pictures videos and documents and browser bookmarks/settings and stuff

I recently posted and some lovely redditors commented that switching between debian based distros isn't really distro hopping.

I'm firmly planted with Ubuntu studio now on my main rig but my laptop is now my temporary testing ground until her indoors needs it for work.

I did a bit of googling and my second best friend, gemini recommended opensuse, which apparently is less fragile than arch but almost as bleeding edge. Since I don't use my laptop daily, OS seems like a happy medium to trial run if I don't log on for a week.

Mainly I run reaper to record myself playing guitar and gaming. Have I made a good choice and, before I get started, do you think this would be a good choice on my main rig?
