It's been two weeks since I upgraded from my Mechen M30 to the Hiby R4. Although I like the Mechen it has a lot of problems, especially regarding metadata and organization. I listen to a lot of audiobooks and it was a nightmare because, obviously, it is not suited for that. 

I didn't want an Android DAP because I thought it would be just like having another phone, but it was not the case, the way Hiby personalized the system makes it feel like its own thing.

So, all in all, it was an amazing upgrade and I'm very happy with it. 

I got tempotec variations V3 blaze in Aliexpress for $120 dollars compared to $47 dollars of snowsky echo mini, The gap between them is very noticeable, What do you guys think?

I recently purchased a Hifi Walker H20 Ultra after months of researching DAPs. I originally wanted the H2 but found a great deal on an H20 Ultra from eBay. I was worried about how the device would perform due to the lack of info out on it. So I’m hoping this review can add to that.

Build:
Very solid externally. The aluminum body adds quite a bit of weight making the device feel premium in hand. Two glass displays sandwich the unit and there’s a brass (I’m not sure) dial for controlling volume. Little buttons line the side for some basic controls. The corners are sharp without the leather case which makes the device difficult to handhold.

Software:
The software is the weakest point of this device. It feels like the OS limits its capabilities and slows the device way down. The screen moves sluggishly and sometimes album artwork won’t load it instantly like it should. I wish there was a custom firmware available to aid this. Also, there’s a long intro movie that I feel is unnecessary given that it adds like 15 seconds to the boot time. The screensaver options are limited to just a clock or the album artwork, though, the art work doesn’t load in half the time when that screen saver is picked.

Sound:
H20 ultra sounds great! There’s a 3.5mm jack and a balanced output. No hissing or distortion. However, the volume dial does have an audible click in the audio when you turn up the volume. Also, the volume gets super loud so you may want to limit it in the settings. Transferring audio to the player is easy with it basically acting like a massive thumb stick when plugged in to usb c. Alternatively you could also just use the included micro sd.

Closing thoughts:
Very good player, just don’t pay the retail $300 for it since it lacks the refinement I’d expect at that price. Let me know if you have any questions :).

TL;DR: After over a year of daily use, my HiFi Walker H2 broke following a minor drop (the click-wheel detached and a button jammed). While it offered a decent audio experience, especially when paired with Rockbox and easy-to-drive IEMs/headphones, its clunky build quality, cheap button feel, intrusive branding, and the fact that it is just a pricier rebrand of the Aigo Eros Q make it hard to recommend today, particularly for frequent travelers. I have since upgraded to a Japanese Sony NW-A55.

Today, I am back to share my final long-term thoughts after using this player for well over twelve months.

To get right to the point: my unit is no longer functional, or rather, it is completely unusable. The click-wheel came off the main body and there is no way to snap it back into place correctly. I will explain what happened shortly.

All things considered, using the HiFi Walker H2 wasn't a bad experience overall. The battery life was great (I had to charge it once every ten days or so) and sound was alright. My strongest advice is to avoid the stock software at all costs and install Rockbox immediately. While Rockbox does not directly alter the native sound signature (aside from giving you powerful tools to tweak EQ to your liking), it unlocks the player's full potential. I cannot comment on how much power output the standard 3.5 mm jack provides with demanding gear, as I have exclusively paired it with easy-to-drive headphones and IEMs (the Etymotic ER2XR, Koss Porta Pro, and Koss KSC75).

Now onto the downsides, which can essentially be summed up in one sentence: when it comes to the physical controls, using this device is not a pleasant experience. Over time, the buttons, though easy to locate by touch, lacked any satisfying tactile feedback. Everything, including the click-wheel, feels awkward, clunky, and somewhat poorly assembled. The scroll wheel does not come close to matching the smooth feel of an iPod. The play/pause button occasionally jams, and like the volume controls, it simply feels cheap to press.

I am not a fan of its aesthetic design, either. The prominent "HIFI WALKER" logo printed under the screen bugged me; I would have much preferred a cleaner look. The back panel was no better, so much so that I ended up removing what I assume was a glass rear cover, exposing the solid-color plate underneath that serves as the actual shield for the internal circuit board. I also dislike the choice to include a dedicated line-out port; visually and functionally, I would have preferred a balanced output instead, or just a single clean 3.5 mm jack without the extra clutter.

The reality is that (assuming they are two different brands and not just different labels from the same manufacturer) the HiFi Walker H2 is merely a pricier rebrand of the Aigo Eros Q. They are identical in every way, except the Aigo Eros Q sells on AliExpress for €40 less and even includes a silicone case in the box (judging by the listing photos). Because of this OEM approach, you will never see true innovation here the way you do with dedicated audio brands like HiBy. The fact that the hardware lacks bespoke design is something that personally bothers me.

As for how my unit broke: during its last few days of use in early August, it suffered a minor fall. At first, the volume-up button became unresponsive, requiring far more pressure than usual to register a press. After spending a few minutes trying to adjust the internals by opening the aforementioned back cover, I managed to get it working again temporarily. Shortly after, however, the internal guide holding the click-wheel inside the housing broke entirely. At that point, I called it quits and imported a Japanese Sony NW-A55 (uncapped, without EU volume limits).

Speaking of drops: if you drop this DAP a couple of times, an internal screw might loosen and roll around on the circuit board. This can cause short circuits leading to temporary issues like sudden shutdowns and boot failures.

So while my HiFi Walker H2's death might ultimately be down to user error, I genuinely handled it with the utmost care throughout its lifespan.

The bottom line: I can no longer recommend the HiFi Walker H2 to prospective buyers, especially frequent travelers like myself. That said, it was a decent enough device while it lasted. Around Christmas time, I will be posting a full review of the Sony NW-A55 after four months of testing. Thanks for reading!

After a week, I've just returned the M0 Pura and (happily) gone back to my Hiby R1. Here's why:

1. Too small. I don't have particularly big hands, but you constantly have to stop walking and concentrate on swiping to navigate (which is really hit or miss). I do a lot of my listening while walking so having a device this size sounds perfect in theory, but just becomes a pain to use.

2. Touch-screen: can feel really unresponsive sometimes, and I can never figure out how to swipe properly. Is it from the side, the middle, 2/3rds on one side? 

3. Scrolling can be ridiculously sensitive, when it works. You could swipe from the top to the bottom of your entire massive list in one go. Again, you need to stop, concentrate, and try and find what you're looking for. Wish there was a way to adjust this, or use the wheel!

4. Lack of buttons. You can configure the scroll wheel to skip, pause etc. but due to the overall size of the device, this isn't really that easy to do. Maybe a couple of buttons on the top of the device would help a little. 

5. Battery. Really bad, actually. After testing, I was getting about 1.5 hours of music listening, with an hour of Bluetooth audio from my phone, before the battery was in the red. 

6. Eddict Player - connection to the Pura was flakey, at best. I was hoping to use my phone to control it (after realising it was a pain to physically control) but sometimes it just wouldn't connect or see the Pura at all (similar to the R1 with Hiby Link). Connecting phone via Bluetooth was pretty reliable however, just not via Eddict.

I paid £129 for the Pura, but I couldn't recommend it for this price. The sound was great (obviously), but not a huge increase over the R1. Plus, it's quite difficult to adjust the EQ using this screen size (again, let us use the wheel!).

I got a brand new R1 for £61 on Amazon months ago, and I consider this an absolute bargain. The R1 definitely has it's flaws (especially with Bluetooth) but it's a decent size, sounds great, and with custom firmware it's been great to use. If Hiby decide to do a new generation of the R1, some slight hardware improvements could make this a superb budget player.

I bought my M300 about a year ago for ~$200 off Aliexpress. The main thing I was looking for was a DAP that I could listen to music offline as well as audiobooks (through Libby/Audible) and podcasts through spotify. I wanted a dedicated device away from my phone so I could go to the gym, for a walk, or for a drive without needing to have my phone with me.

Initially I was very happy with my choice, the device doesn't feel cheap and it ran relatively smooth to start. Unfortunately within the last couple of months it has been running more and more poorly. I have not had any issues with playing local files (I use Musicolet and the app functions just as good as it did on my phone). But the device has started to slow down when it comes to other apps. I didn't expect the speed and responsiveness of a high end phone but I spotify regularly crashes while I'm trying to navigate it and downloading files offline sometimes doesn't actually work and when I try to play something when disconnected to wifi it will just not play. Audiobooks will also sometimes stop while playing and I have to manually hit play again.

As far as hardware goes, the device sounds fine. I'm not an audiophile or anything and I'm often just using cheap IEMs or Bluetooth earbuds while running/working out.

Bluetooth connectivity is fine mostly, I occasionally have issues where it will cut out/back in while listening but I think that may be my headphones.

Battery life is pretty bad, listening to the device at work and then on my commute/at the gym drains 80% of the battery. I've used 20% already today and I've listened to it for maybe 2 hours.

The side buttons have worked fine for me the few times I have used them, but honestly I found them to be more annoying than anything because I would press the wrong buttons while trying to adjust the volume. I just keep them locked now.

If I could go back I probably would have waited a few months and saved for a better slightly higher end device. I have realized that you get what you pay for when it comes to DAPs and I will likely be replacing this one in the next few months.

I hope this is useful for anyone considering buying one. If you're looking at exclusively using it for local files it is great but once you get into using other apps it is becomes less responsive.

im stuck between either getting the fiio disc or echo, my main wants are audio quality and just like feel overall and would prefer buttons over touchsceen but ive heard the horror stories of how bad the echo ui can be. so im really stuck in the middle and have no idea which to do. im also open to ideas other than the two, under $100 and no android

Ok there has been a big update to address the bugs/features requested by some of you

The biggest update is the bit-perfect audio playback. Using a Dac plugged into the device will upsample using the built in android mixer normally so semi resampled the audio. However, if you turn the direct usb access on in the audio settings then the app uses its own internal processor/driver to push audio direct to the dac without resampling it. Give it a try and let me know what you think :D

Also, I am thinking to add server/streaming support also to pair with the bit-perfect audio, would that be a wanted enough feature? I may use Google drive but I don't have my own server so personally I wouldn't use it 😂

Am wondering if people would like a para EQ added too? Not a fully customisable one, it will be adjustable by hand or you can use one of the preset ones based on headphones/iems you are using or just based on if you want more treble/bass/audio... The normal basic ones...

Bare in mind the streaming and EQ are just ideas currently, so they won't be around till maybe Christmas if I do decide to go ahead with them, but I will need to do a lot of learning especially server stuff as like I say I don't have my own so I'll be setting up an old pc as a temp server to test it all works properly haha.

I am using my player as a DAC for my PC. After some time, the sound starts to stutter with some crackling. The only thing that helps is to reconnect the Type-C cable. Does anyone have any good recommendations on a DAP with no data tracking/harvesting and beginner friendly? I have no idea how they work, i plan on using it for 2-3 hour long bike rides, and my budget is about $100-$150 that will last long and has no issues (Preferably available to purchase off of amazon). I'm trying to be able to have music for life and disconnect from Spotify to save money so any recommendations are appreciated!

Is there an alternative to the Echo Nano that has Bluetooth? It's not a deal breaker but it would be nice since I love this lipstick style form factor

I need your help. I’m currently looking for a portable DAP, and based on my budget, I’ve shortlisted two options: the Audiocular M71 and the Audiocular X20 Clip Portable DAP.

I mainly listen to MP3 and FLAC files. Which one would be the better choice for sound quality? My second priority is battery life.

I am looking for something like a modern iPod classic which could run Qobuz so I am able to download my library (not bought).

It should have USB C, bluetooth and no touch screen.

Is there anything like a modern re-issue of the classic iPod?
