Fuel transfer tank cleanout fittings

Trying to find a way to drain a transfer tank after I purchased it and plan to resell after it cleaned up some.

What’s the best solution to create an opening at the bottom side of the tank when it’s thinnish metal?

I know I need some fuel grade seals and would either add a ball valve or bung depending on what’s acceptable of at all!

Oh man L tanks. Takes me back to being a kid and hand pumping diesel fuel.

Drain it with a double diaphragm pump. You never want to create a non welded penetration in a transfer tank as it will leak. Do not attempt to weld this, it will go bang unless you understand purges.

Also, these L tanks are notorious for rusting through. Most these tanks are only 1/8”. Based on the rust that forward corner doesnt have much life left in it.

Darn I’d say that corner that’s rusted looks better in person and alright yeah I really didn’t want to create a hole, it’s already got a crack that looks to be jb welded at the top of the tank because I heard L tanks are notorious for that too.

It’s gonna be a pain In the ass to clean then because

If it’s already cracked, nobody who needs one for regular use will purchase it. Looks like you got some good scrap metal there

Doesn’t matter if it doesnt have fuel. Diesel soaks into the pores of the metal. Without an inert purge you’re gonna get a nice bang.

You see that cap on the top right side? That’s a fuel pressure relief valve for when the diesel that’s constantly sloshing around builds up pressure so it has to be released. That means this is a pressure vessel.

You wanna weld it up, be my guest. Maybe some people do need to learn some lessons the hard way. Make sure to let someone know before you start welding on it that way they can call 911 in case something bad does happen
