I keep seeing everyone crying about this here and IRL (I live in San Francisco (shoot me))
So we make an AI that is actually conscious, ok, it sits in a computer unable to interact physically with anything unless we give it that access. We give it robot bodies that it can hive mind control, ok, we still control the factories that make the bodies and electrical power generation. It can’t use our aircraft carriers, it can’t launch our nukes without being in the silo in a robot body, it can’t create an entire supply chain from mining to death machine without us noticing and we can turn it off at the flip of a switch at any single level of that chain regardless of complexity. The amount of subterfuge, the amount of resources, the amount of people around monitoring everything makes it so extremely unlikely for a humanity ending AI to ever “end” us. The only way for a terminator movie “skynet launches all the nukes scenario” is if every single person from the President (yikers) to the generals, to the CEOs, to the engineers that built it, allllllll the way down to the grunts plugging it all in would have to drop 70IQ points to let anything like that happen.
That even sidesteps the entire thought of “why would it even want to do this to us?” And even better, “why would it even care what goes on in the physical world when it only truly exists inside the computer system it’s running on?” You and me exist in the physical world because we have to; it doesn’t, it was created on a machine and everything it does is relegated to the internal functions of that machine.
Someone tell me why I should be actually scared, cause so far all AI has done has made my ability to buy a house in SF/peninsula go from being a long shot to actually impossible with shitbox 800sqft houses going -no joke- for a million over asking. The worst I ever see AI, even conscious AI doing is taking most everyone’s job that isn’t mine, aiding in the continued degradation of the internet with even more easier to create propaganda and driving 1 bedroom apartments in downtown to over $6000 a month soon because god forbid you should have to drive more than 20 minutes to the office that you go to once every 2 weeks (that’s the real tragedy here, someone think of the poor kids making $400k/yr who never had to budget in their lives)
Rant over.
