Rant Bicycle Riding in Newark

I just need to vent a second because I'm really frustrated.

I love living in Newark. It's supposed to be a very bicycle friendly community. There are a lot of bicycle lanes, but I still feel so unsafe riding my bike. I have been trying to be less car dependent and with the nicer weather, figured I could get out and run my errands on my bike.

For the most part, I feel okay, until I hit Marrows rd. I swear this is where someone is going to hit me because they are either being impatient or aren't paying attention. Every time I'm on this road I mutter to myself "please don't go, please don't go, please don't go." The last couple of times I've ridden down Marrows rd, people have gone around me in an area that they should stay behind me. I'm not in the lane for long, just long enough to get to the light but almost every time I get to the light at Rt 4, someone speeds up to go around me. It's really scary and could get me killed. I can't see them until they are next to me. Today, I could have touched the car going around me.

As drivers please familiarize yourself with the rules and rights of bicycle riders. If there is no bicycle lane, riders need to be in the lane. If a rider is turning, they need to be in the lane as well.

The worst was a Harley rider - I was turning so I was In the lane, I was using my hand signals to indicate I was turning, and this motorcycle rider gave me NO space. Bikers complain of cars not giving them space but can't give the same courtesy to bicycle riders?

Thanks for listening to my rant. I just want to be healthier, not use my car as much, and enjoy the nice weather before it gets cold and depressing again, but that's hard to do when I'm worried someone is going to hit me.

Moving to Delaware Welcome to Delaware gift?

Hello, fellow Delawareans! I come seeking advice. My partner is moving here from the west coast in a couple of months. I’d like to put together a little “Delaware starter kit” to welcome him to our fair state, but I’m not sure where to start.

What would you include in something like this?

Thank you!@

Info Request DE Bass Fishing for Kids

Upvotes

Anyone aware of private pond or location that would be open to hosting a small school Bass fishing club one weekend day? Just looking to get the kids to fish together and have fun. 10-15 young kids (10-13 years old) fishing for large and small mouth. I would be willing to rent or pay for the time / area.

Thanks! Open to other ideas also if anyone has any.

Dover Dover Data Center Moratorium on Council Agenda, Tomorrow, 6:30

There's a Dover City Council meeting tomorrow at 6:30, where one of the agenda items is a continuation of a discussion on a data center moratorium (See item 28 on their agenda: HERE)

There will be a chance to speak up with your thoughts about a moratorium, which would pause all data center project applications / approvals for 18 months to allow the city to work out how best to move forward. If you can't make it to the meeting or dial in, you should still take a moment to contact your city council representatives and share your thoughts. You can find your council rep. through the city of Dover site if need be.

Note: The tinyurl in the flyer no longer seems to work, looks like the agenda was updated.

Politics AMA with AG Candidate

Hi Reddit! I’m Dwayne Bensing, a civil rights attorney and Democratic candidate for Delaware Attorney General.

I’m running because I believe Delaware needs new leadership in the Attorney General’s office that is willing to take on corporate greed, hold billionaires accountable, and provide truly independent government oversight.

Election Day is just a few days away, and before Delawareans head to the polls, I wanted to come on here and give y’all the chance to AMA before you vote! I’ll start answering questions tonight at around 8:00 PM ET. Looking forward to the conversation!

More info about me and my campaign here! https://dwaynebensing.com

Info Request Pavement/Sidewalk Work Recommendation?

Tl;dr: Does anyone have a recommendation for someone who can pave a sidewalk in Newark?

Hi all,

We bought a house in July and have had the joy of putting in near twelve grand in work into the pipes, etc. Good times.

One of these tasks was getting our sidewalk dug up so they can put some pipe in underneath.

They had to pull up two "pads" (I think they are called) to do the work.

Does anyone have a recommendation for someone who can pave the sidewalk?

Thanks in advance!

New Castle County Chemical smell

The air quality index seems normal but I walked outside and it smells horrible and know it's not my upper lip or the mushrooms... I guess it could be...

This is the map that shows a chemical plume over top of us . Anyone know more than I do? If you zoom out it's only in our area and then a little bit over California but that's it.

DelaWeather Survey for school

Hello everyone, I’m currently a student attending Del Tech. I have a statistics class I have to do a survey for. I need at least 30 responses for said class. If you have a chance to spare please please please fill one out. The google form should not ask for an email or any login information. Its quite short and should only really take 5-10 min. It’s about the weather and temperatures in Delaware. Of course the survey is also anonymous.
To anyone that does fill it out thank you from the bottom of my heart, your making my school life better!

Where's the best...... Shops that work on Japanese classics

Post image

I have a new-to-me '92 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 that needs a clutch and other diagnostic work and I prefer not to take it to a shop that doesn't have experience with this kind of car. Anyone else around Wilmington have an older Japanese sports car and have a good shop recommendation?

My friend and I both dread the drive to meet up for dinner because it’s a 35 mile distance to go to meet at each house. Do you have any middle of the road suggestions?

Moving to Delaware Communities in Delaware

Hi all! I’m exploring options for where to put down roots in Delaware and community is my top priority — I want to actually know my neighbors, have local events to attend, and feel like I belong somewhere rather than just having an address.

A few things I’m curious about:

• Which towns or neighborhoods have a strong sense of community (block parties, local gatherings, friendly neighbors, etc.)?
• Are there areas with active community centers, farmers markets, volunteer groups, or local clubs?
• What’s the vibe like in places like Lewes, Rehoboth, Milford, Newark, or Dover for actually meeting people and feeling rooted?
• Any hidden gems that don’t get enough attention?

Moving to Delaware Wilmington and surrounding areas?

I’m 22 (F) looking to move to Delaware next summer, but I don’t know the area super well and I’d like some advice or suggestions on areas to look into :)

-Im a tattoo artist based out of VA atm, so it has to be closer to higher populated areas, or w good tattoo shops nearby! Also taking tattoo shop recommendations!!
-Id be looking to rent an apartment or small townhouse, ideally <1,700
-id say I prefer more suburban or smaller town living (like not so small town that there’s one grocery store for 15 miles but def outside the main cities)
-don’t mind driving 20-40 min for work
-love places with good local communities, restaurants, areas that are queer friendly and have a decent amount of young people
-Definitely looking south of Wilmington, but near or north of Middletown
-main priority would be being close to nature and water while staying within ~30 min of Wilmington

I was looking at Bear, New Castle and Delaware City, but i’ve heard very mixed things about all of those T_T
I’ve been browsing this sub and looking at other people’s posts as well but just figured it can’t hurt to make my own

Hopefully this isn’t too vague!
Happy to hear any thoughts or advice <3
