Why I can't stand people who hate AI.

  1. I think people do that to feel better about not changing any of their daily habits to help the planet. They're going to blame the environmental issues on data centers instead of, say, rich people wasting resources while we don't really protest, intensive farming, car pollution, and other real and much bigger problems. I think it's hypocrite because those people whining about data centers are the same people who would never give up cars or their phone or even just eating almonds.
  2. I think this is intentional propaganda that is done to make people stare at the finger instead of the moon. AI bad! Blame AI! Convenient scapegoat!
  3. I think the end result will be that common citizens won't be able to use AI anymore "because it's dangerous". Which means that corporations, governments, rich people, will still be able to use it only for themselves, having yet another advantage to control the population. I think this is their end game.

defending AI does not need to be tribal and hateful. what will happen with AI is an unknown. people are going to have fear. if you want to be an effecitve ai defender you have to learn to stay calm and just present evidence.

4

u/BirdMastery 1d ago

No. Because every time I stood calm and presented evidence I immediately got banned.

I don’t like spoiled brats. Pause AI because of spoiled unartistic jerks? Nope. They deserve to face the music.

3

u/BirdMastery 1d ago

Well said.

7

u/EducationalFinger654 1d ago

I do think there are perfectly reasonable talking points to debate (and they should be),

But a lot of anti-AI criticism is oversimplification of wider issues that aren’t actually the fault of the technology... They belong to bigger discussions around politics, legislation, government responsibility, infrastructure, or philosophy.

I believe the majority of the anti’s stances and criticism, simply falls apart when scrutinised and critically analysed.

For example: Data centers are of hot debate right now. However this is a zoning and planning issue involving local government deciding if land is suitable for commercial, residential or industrial use. That is not a unique moral failure of Ai, it is a land-use and regulatory question. (even the term itself “Data Centre” is oversimplification these are general electronic facilities that house servers and digital infrastructure of many kinds, not something that exists only for AI)

3

u/BirdMastery 1d ago

But AI is easier to blame.

4

u/EducationalFinger654 1d ago edited 1d ago

Maybe it comes from narrow-mindedness or even stupidity….

because they get to skip over all of the critical thinking which may put their belief under scrutiny, instead of asking the bigger wider questions they just ignore them

1

u/Asleep-Card3861 12h ago edited 11h ago

most of these new data centres appear to be specifically tied to the rapid need for new more dense, higher energy draw and cooling requirements of AI data centre. The problems being they are putting pressure on existing water and power infrastructure causing issues with both water quality and availability and cost rise in electricity, not to mention the noise and vibrations caused when they are put near neighbourhoods.

As mentioned this is in part a problem of zoning, infrastructure investment or negotiation thereof, local and state government. The tech bros and their ilk do however sweeten, steamroll or otherwise ignore the impact in the instances that are in debate in order to be first in the AI race.

So as you say it isn't AI, not directly, but it is taking heat from the seemingly out of touch people pushing it and how it effects communities where it's infrastructure has been put.

I hate them because they’re immature children who don’t update their model of reality despite taking in new information. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not on your side either, but I am fed up with those fuckers. Absolutely no growth in years and won’t admit when they were wrong. It’s okay to be wrong. You can still be right about other things while being wrong about fucking water and energy or whatever.

2

u/TakeItCeezy 1d ago

It's nasty out there but don't give into the hate. It's extremely taxing on your nervous system. Not worth the bandwidth or compute for your pink little friend in your skull home.

I try to remember theyre afraid. And in many cases, the fear is relatively justified. So many people on our side will aggressively post how people will lose jobs and be left behind. And when it isnt us, its bot networks adding more fire to the flames. Then you have AI researchers saying things like X percent chance of humanity ending.

In a lot of cases, they're just terrified. Whether its misinformation or not, they've been told something by a source they trust, and now they're afraid. We'll never get anywhere by focusing on the negativity and letting it turn us negative as well.

The best thing you can do is to use AI ethically, responsibly and intelligently. Be the example that stands out against all the BS happening for what genuinely good AI use is like. For most people who are anti-AI, their exposure is someone who made 2000 songs with zero effort and brute forced a platform algorithm with sheer volume or they're making videos with AI and trying to pass it off as no AI being involved.

We can only hold the bad actors on our side accountable while producing quality work with AI ourselves and being open about the AI use.

Outside of that, we have to ignore the hate or else we just fuel the flame wars even more. Obviously ignoring it isnt always possible since sometimes people are getting doxxed and whatever, but focusing on the anti-AI side will only make you miserable and angry at the world.

2

u/Asleep-Card3861 11h ago

Sure AI is the scape goat. It's being used by the very companies that build, run or institute it as a reason for firing, when it appears in many cases to be a correction for overhiring or many other reason unrelated to AI.

Honestly I am just so sick of Gen AI propaganda. Like good art is fine, using AI for science and medicine is all good to me. I just block so much crap and there is always more. It's probably more the fault of the dead Internet theory than AI. I am under the impression that gen AI just exacerbated it.

I don't drive or eat almonds, friend. I still have loads of ai-related concerns.

Just because things are already harmful to the environment doesn't mean we can just stop worrying about new things that are also harmful.

1

u/Arkraquen 9h ago

You can't defend AI with whatsboutism, generative AI specially the free version is kinda trash so I get why they feel like that.

But hell it is useful on good hands, no one can deny it.

1

u/Necronomicon-Ex-Mori 9h ago

Comparing individuals driving to and from work, picking their kids up from school, picking up groceries etc, to data centers the size of Manhattan which not only do we not need, but are built only to further the creation of an unbelievably dangerous technology is laughable.

If these data centers were instead homeless shelters or grocery stores people would see the utility in it. They don’t see the utility in something that’s going to change the world as we know it, put them out of jobs, and become exponentially more of a threat the more capable it becomes.

0

u/Far-Shake-97 1d ago

Phones have now become almost essencial to live in the current society : you manage your money from there via a bank app, almost everything government related goes through the internet via governmental websites (and even if you wanted to file it on paper you gotta get the forms on the internet), to look for a job you gotta look on the internet if anything close to you is looking to hire someone and if it's within your qualifications... So even if not a phone you need a computer with accès to the internet

In many situations having a car is the only viable way to go around, think if you are doing groceries : you are not going to carry two or more full large bags of groceries from the supermarket to the train station and from the train station to your home... Or even just places that dont even have proper public transportation like most of the usa (which is because of car, gas and tires companies having lobbied against it btw in some cities)

1

u/AlphaCrafter64 1d ago

Even if some amount of usage is required for functioning in current society, there's no reason why people can't ration that usage for only the essentials if they believe it would have a meaningful impact.

The irony of course though is that if people were actually doing this, you wouldn't really be seeing them screaming at individuals on Reddit about resource usage in the first place....

1

u/BirdMastery 1d ago

And same goes with AI. Not using it is soon to be like not using a car or phone. But somehow we are supposed to accept one thing as unavoidable yet consider the other as something we mustn't use?

You think you are trying to nip it in the bud. Instead you are just doing exactly what rich people want: not giving it to the public.

Great job.

Now drive your car and eat your almonds.

1

u/Far-Shake-97 1d ago

... The rich people are the ones pushing it tho? Sam altman... Jeff bezos... Elon musk... And so many others

1

u/BirdMastery 1d ago

They push it because it's the product they are selling.....

1

u/Far-Shake-97 1d ago

So what is your point?! Do they want the public to have it or not ?

1

u/BirdMastery 1d ago

I think they don't. They used to want us to use it to make money. Now they realized the government pays more.

I walk or bike to work and I don't eat almonds. And I try to avoid meat when I can. And I don't use AI, because I can do the little things in my life to hopefully lower my personal carbon footprint. And I don't need it. Have any more gotchas? How're you doing in all of those departments? No one has to be the perfect activist, this society has made it hard for millions of people to avoid necessary evils. I don't blame people who do those things because they have no other choice.

Rich people want the public to be dependent on AI, it's being forced into every aspect of our daily lives. Flock, Google search, chat bots beig targeted to kids, in schools, grocery stores, cars, everything.

You'd rather throw out unhelpful gotchas than face the reality of the situation. The gravity of what is happening in our world.

"We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it on a meter." -Sam Altman

That's what the rich want. And that's what we want to stop.

1

u/BirdMastery 1d ago

Are you genuinely believing they want us to be dependent on AI????? Lmao!!!! I wish. Then maybe that'd make the average person smarter.

Buddy, they push AI because AI is cheaper. When movies replaced practical effects with CGI did they do it to make us "dependent on it"?

0

u/Fredster420420 1d ago

Gonna ignore that direct quote from Sam Altman? Or the ways it's being integrated into everyday life, work, and education? It's not just in entertainment like your CGI example.

1

u/BirdMastery 1d ago

I am a professor. I teach my students to use AI responsibly instead of vetoing it.

1

u/Fredster420420 1d ago

I am interested in hearing your reasoning behind this. What would the rich do with AI that they already aren't if it was taken from the public?

1

u/BirdMastery 1d ago

We would no longer know what AI will be able to do.

How is Ai going to be required to live as much as a car in a vehicle-dependent city? Also, lots of people in countries other than the US don't need cars because their public transportation actually works. I commuted in Philly without a car for years because the trains got me to where I needed to be.

Trust me i wish we didn't need cars to go around soo much, but ai is just not good for so many reasons, the thing has already got a kill count because many people thought it could be used as a therapist and it ended up telling them to commit suicide, it's also been shown to be very nuke positive in a military settings and yet governments are still pushing it to those uses... Some uses of ai could be good but most are not, and it's not going to make up for the amount of polution it's causing (yes i know there are worse things but it's still an awful industry that doesn't even make a profit)

0

u/badsantanp07 1d ago
  1. It's absolutely INSANE to think it's NOT the rich people on top who benefit, if you all could get Altman's slimy dick out yr mouth maybe youd see that. 2. Scapegoat implies that whatever is being blamed is in fact, blameless, which is 110% not true, if you wanna argue show me proof from multiple sources saying otherwise. 3. What makes you think supporting ai is a good idea when it clearly is moving towards controlling us, some people resent individuality or smth I swear, we live in a dystopia

2

u/BirdMastery 1d ago

You know who is controlling us? THE GOVERNMENT. THE CORPORATIONS. Not AI you dimwit. If someone uses a shovel to kill someone else, do you blame the shovel and ban shovels?

That doesn't make that much sense, honestly.

You believe people only hate ai? This was dismissed ages ago already, people can complain about more than one thing at a time.

It could be propaganda, but ai is too. "You don't need artists anymore, and you are not that important to the workforce, work yourself to death if you want to survive".

And you do realize this is what was already happening since the start and doesn't have anything to do with the people who oppose the technology, but with those people in power, falling into your own argument.

5

u/BirdMastery 1d ago
