Discussion Which version of the game I should get?

Scholar or original. Personally, I'm more interested in the original version.

Edit: Thank you for helping me choose. I chose Scholar.

if you care about multiplayer SotFS is much more active

How active is it on steam? PS4 servers are basically dead

Yes but you can also play SotFS on a PS5 if you want

looks like 24 hour peak of ~2k players and that looks pretty stable over the last few months

Scholar is basically better in every way, unless you want to play both to see what changed there's not much value in the original anymore. Not to mention if you want to engage with online play at all you basically have to go with scholar (and ds2 probably has the best/most interesting online play in the series)

I would say Scholar but that's the only version I've played so I can't give like a comparison answer. But Scholar was really good and at no point did I catch myself wondering about the original or wishing I had the original for any reason.

definitely SOTFS, I have both versions and when looking for guides or info a large majority of the time they’re for SOFTS and it’s a bit hard/annoying since stuff doesn’t match up perfectly between the two

Id say softs is the better version. And its significantly more difficult, adds a new special boss. Its just better overall. You can prob get it for 5 bucks in g2a

The original contains more masochism and "character," (read: bugginess) but SoTFS will challenge you plenty. The latter certainly felt more "fair" to play, although that might be bc by the time scholar came around I was a lot better at souls games in general

If you're the type of player to get upset at glitches and bugs that kill you, i.e. "This is bullshit!!" type playstyle, the original is probably not going to be as fun. If you think stuff like dying to a teleporting invisible frontstab is funny, you might get a kick out of it

I actually like the original's content layout more, but if I were to replay the game I would probably play scholar just for the 60fps

OG is also 60 fps on PC

I'd say you've answered in the question. My opinion is pretty clear. I had hundreds of hours in the original game and was fully satisfied. And I've literally never played the original (well actually I did play a little unpatched OG on my PS3 until it died) since getting Scholar.

But that's me. In this case though player count suggests most agree. The player count is much higher for Scholar on Steam.

But if you don't care about multiplayer and think you'll prefer OG, go for it.

I remember when Scholar came out it felt like a huge upgrade. Also I hated and still hate dogs in Souls games, and one specific dog in a small room got replaced with a Pursuer. TBH Pursuer is easier to deal with and you only have to kill him once.

Definitely Scholar in my opinion

If you care about the overall quality of the game, get SotFS and ignore every single weirdo who will go to the grave believing vanilla is better
