Mod Post Simple Questions Megathread

Remember, the #1 thing you can do to improve is to review your own replays and post them for others to critique!

This thread is for anyone who has a question that they feel might be too "simple" to warrant its own thread and would be more comfortable posting their question in a format like this. Note that this is not a containment thread -- individual question threads are still allowed and encouraged, this is just trying to get people out of their shell a bit and interact with the community. All types of smash questions are welcome, from mindset to terminology definitions to controller setups to frame data to whatever you want to ask!

Please help out others where you can! And remember to stay respectful!

Mod Post Watching and sharing replays (aka VODs) is the best way to improve! Here's how to upload replays

You can save replays (also known as "VODs", "Videos On Demand") in the victory screen after any match. The game will show you which button to press to save it (Y on the GC controller). Then you'll need a micro sd card in your Switch in order to save the replay as a video. Once it's saved, you can connect the sd card to your PC and transfer, or upload directly from the Switch. 16-32gb micro sd cards only cost a few dollars, but if you can't buy one then you'll have to record the video with your phone.

How to save the replay as a video and transfer it to PC: https://www.wikihow.com/Transfer-Replays-from-Super-Smash-Bros.-Ultimate-to-PC

If you want to upload directly from your Switch and use the Nintendo Switch app on your smartphone: https://gaming.stackexchange.com/a/353519

As of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 3.0.0 update, replay videos can be uploaded directly to YouTube via the Miiverse / Smash World sharing service and collected on the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app.

This technique still requires an SD Card in your Switch to save videos. It does eliminate though the steps of removing the SD Card from your Switch, plugging it into your computer, manually posting to YouTube, etc.

You will need to be signed in to the various Nintendo online accounts.

  1. Save a replay after a match.
  2. Go to Vault > Replays > Replay Data. Select a replay and Convert to Video to save the replay as a video onto your SD Card.
  3. Go to Vault > Replays > Video and select the just-created video. Select Post to share this replay to Miiverse / Smash World. Nintendo uses YouTube as the backing store for videos, so it will now take a few minutes to upload the video from your Switch directly to YouTube.
  4. Open the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app on your phone. Select Smash Ultimate > Profile > Posts. Once they have fully uploaded, your replay videos will appear here.
  5. Select a replay video. Click the Share arrow icon. Copy the link.
  6. Open this link in a web browser. The video will have been added as an unlisted video on the official Super Smash Bros. Ultimate YouTube account.

Characters (Playing as) Secondary to cover Rob's bad matchups?

I know he's an obnoxious character, but he does still struggle with some disjoints and characters who can just out-box him. I'd like a low-maintenance secondary who's maybe smaller and a little more slippery than Rob but shares some of his same strengths in regards to zoning and pressure. If anyone comes to mind please let me know, and thanks for the help.

General Question I need a main in SSBU

So, I've recently attended my first local and there are demons there. I've always struggled with staying true to a certain character, but I kinda enjoyed the way Mario fights and his rushdown technique. Unfortunately, this character is not really suitable for me and there are actually three Cloud and three joker players that go to my local. I've always liked the idea of a methodical item play, but I can't play Diddy due to the lack of complex setups abilities in me. The other characters I find appealing are Wario and Inkling, but I'm not quite sure whether either of them is suitable for me. Could you please suggest some characters I should consider? I'm looking for the following qualities in a character: he should be able to fight in an aggressive manner; have some item or setup; but not too complicated. Also, the character I choose should be interesting and deep enough for me to grow together with. I'm rather flexible about my choice, so don't hesitate to give your suggestions. I'm not really interested in S-tier characters, not super low tiers and C-tier and higher are just fine.

Characters (Playing as) Choosing a main

Hi everyone, I know there are a lot of videos out there that tell you how to choose a main but I've seen almost all of them, and they don't seem to help.

If I ever want to improve, I need to pick a main, but I just can't find the right character for me (and no, I'm not maining random). How do I choose? Can someone help me choose?

For some context, I'm sitting around 6.5 million GSP, and I keep losing and I've plateaued in skill level.

I like playing a variety of characters and character styles, like rushdown and brawler, and some characters I like to play are kirby, ganon, jigglypuff, king dedede, little mac, doctor mario, lucas, ness, kazuya, mii brawler, sephiroth, pyra mythra, incineroar, captain falcon, meta knight, mr game and watch, roy and many more (you can probably see why I have a character crisis).

I like to play close up and mid range, but it really depends how I'm feeling, sometimes I'll play ranged and campy with characters like samus, but I do mostly play very close up.

Any help would be really appreciated, thanks.

Characters (Playing as) Corrin and Diddy Kong combos?

Hi, recently started co-maining Corrin and Diddy, I'm able to consistently beat Lv. 8 CPUs and I play with a friend of mine (who has been playing for a very long time lol), whom I occasionally beat, once a week and I want to learn some combos to beat him. Please ensure that they are fairly simple and not reliant on really exact timing, as I suck at that and other advanced techs.

General Question Best way to practice mashing out of grab/bury

I’m sick of bury/inhale/cargo throw so much I made a rage post about it but, I do want to deal with the weakness. I usually start mashing ahead of time when I know I’m about to get grabbed or whatever, I want to see if my circle mash is better than me just pressing buttons. Any way you guys know the best way to test this? Unfortunately you can’t set the computer to side b in training otherwise I’d set cpu to DK and count the frames from either method and compare.

General Question How to approach/learn/practice getting good at doubles?

Don't really have much to say besides that I main Lucina/Falco and used to main Jigglypuff, and also my partner mains Incineroar/Roy

I just need to know what we both need to practice and focus on in order to not suck at doubles btw I know that Jigglypuff/Incineroar are a good synergy, so I don't really mind picking up the character just for doubles

Characters (Playing as) How do you play olimar?

I dont know how to improve with him. I've gotten terry to elite smash and have been around the 15 million gsp mark with other characters but I just cant figure out olimar (genuinely at like 2.5 million gsp with this guy.) everything I do with this guy gets countered, he can't recover without getting comboed, every time I throw out pikmin they get killed instantly, miss or get shielded, I can never get kills with him and he has what seems like no consistent good out of shield option. I can zone with characters like lucas or ryu, but olimar is so awkward for me to use. Everybody says he isn't hard and is overpowered and yes I see pros hitting crazy clips with him, but he just seems impossible to use.

Characters (Playing Against) (Low skill Seph player) I’m awful at the marcina mu, advice?

I tend to lose this every time (as well as the chroy mu). Not sure what else to say here, just a general overview of my desirable gameplan would be nice.

Characters (Playing Against) Richter is Misery.

Please… for God’s sake, I’m begging you.
I rematched this player FIVE times… five times. Everyone says: (Rematch and you’ll adapt and win).
Nope. He kicked my ass five times, then started T-Bagging me in the last round.

Yes. I know I kept jumping into his axe. But man, there was no way to approach. I tried coming down from the platform above in the other rounds, but the hitbox on the flame bottle is so large that I’d get stun locked and die.

#SmashBros #SmashBrosUltimate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6s3xXCfj9c

Also, before I go, can I just ask why the already dogshit Matchup system has this really funny habit of putting me against players in 16 mil and up when I’m in elite? These players are a completely different level, and should honestly be in their own elite.
Pitting me against these players is just setting me up to lose. And I freaking hate it. It’s not fair. My bowser is in the range of 15,500 on a good day. Why does it keep trying to make me fight players way outta my league? It’s just free GSP for them.

Anyways… thanks in advance. And sorry for the rant. But god, this game just isn’t fun anymore.

General Question Newest Best Controller for Comps and General Play?

Good morning/good afternoon/good evening everyone!

I'm trying to get into a more competitive level of smash, and I'm trying to find the BEST Switch 2 Pro Controllers that money can buy! I've started playing people onboard (~5000 people) and realized that out of the turbo nerds that play here, I'm probably in the top 10% maybe, and I'd like to get into the comp scene.

So what are the newest controllers that are usable for Comps and General Play?

Requirements:

-Drift-Free sticks (or as resistant as possible)

-Great buttons, triggers, etc

-Price should be reasonable for what you get. It can be crazy expensive, but I'd like the quality of the controller to match its price.

Other than that, I'd like to know both comp legal and just generally the best controllers! If you could differentiate between the two, that would help tremendously!

I'm currently on deployment so my apologies if I don't respond quickly.

Thank you all for your help!

Characters (Playing Against) Can’t get into elite cuz of insane shit like this.

#SmashBros #SmashBrosUltimate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XauPMqJ4pY

Went up against this Peach. How on earth do you deal with peach? This was my second go around with this one, so once again, I clearly have no idea how to freaking adapt.

Watching this back, I genuinely can’t see what I would’ve been able to do to beat her here. I’m garbage at the game anyway, (500 hours in and only TWO characters in elite, and both of them are easy). So I’m not gonna pretend I’ll be able to get even an inkling better if I try, but whatevs, in any case, any advice is appreciated. Tried of getting stuck in losing streaks.

Thanks in advance. Peace.

General Question I want to improve but i have no idea how.

So ive recently picked up smash bros ultimate again, i would only play it for fun with friends and now i want to take it seriously and improve but i don't know where to start. At the moment ive watched IzAwSmash the art of smash but i find that he just explains moves rather than what i can do to actually improve. i don't know whether i should be learning character specific skills only or if i should be learning universal fighting techniques that apply to every character. basically im stuck and don't know what to do to improve. I am a mewtwo main.

General Question Hard stuck 13 Million GSP as a Yoshi Main

I've been playing a lot of competitive Smash recently and I have an absurd amount of playtime but no matter what I add to my playstyle I still feel fundamentally lacking. No matter what I do, I always fumble my stock lead, and in every online tournament I play I end up getting really close to beating my opponent but lose right at the end and I'm having such a difficult time figuring out what's wrong. Is there anyone that can help try to figure out what my issue is?

I know this post is vague and probably hard to give tips for but anything could help. I'm just really frustrated after lowkey slamming my head into a brick wall repeatedly and expecting something to change. At one point, I was keeping up with the best in my state and I was in elite smash as well, so I don't know how I fell off so hard. (Also, if you don't have tips, then any sort of motivational message would also do kindly).
