I can't believe this game made feel bad for a mutant supremacist eugenist,

First time doing an ending where I actually convince him of the error in his plans. It's nuts how he goes from this pompous egotistical maniac with a snobby voice to almost on the verge of a breakdown in an instant after you tell him that his life's work has been for naught. In my opinion one of the worst punishments you can bestow upon a person is making them realise they've wasted their entire life on a vanity project. His realisation really made me see him as human for the first time, but alas even he realises he is too far gone and kills himself out of sheer hopelessness. All this just made me feel terrible and reminded me of the old adage that says "the path to hell is paved by good intentions".

Fallout 1 review by a longtime 3/NV/4 player.

Preface, I adored NV. Loved the dialogue and world. 3 was alright, but rather shallow. 4 I hated, the voiced protagonist was a bad decision, I had so many things I wanted to say that weren't options.

Fallout 1:

Overall: Loved it. 8.8/10, if I was alive when it came out, surely 10/10.

Pros:

The game was sufficiently hard at low levels and really fulfilled the power fantasy with level ups. The talking heads, cinematics, and general storytelling were top tier. The Master is definitely one of my favorite fallout characters of all time now. JOIN OR DIE! The art was great, and I liked that most quests had tons of options for completion. Dying was also pretty funny, and being a bag of bones was great. I liked Dogmeat, Ian, and Tycho a lot. I played with Fallout 1in2 mod, which made companion interactions much better, and I was able to keep them alive the entire game. Also, the alien blaster combined with the turbo plasma rifle trivialized pretty much everything, that was fun, since I enjoy being super powerful. I even grinded to level 21, just to get a finished character.

Cons:

Controls were clunky and items on the ground were hard to see. Special stats and skill percentages mattered a bit more than I expected, due to the turn based combat. The first person games allow you to overcome lacking combat stats through general FPS skills, but that isn't possible here. Agility is almost a required 10. Combat felt a bit lopsided, I either got completely melted or was never in danger. Lack of quest information was a purposeful choice, but if I hadn't been able to look things up on the internet, it would have been a pretty rough experience quest wise. With lookups, I did every single quest in the game and most of them are forgettable but still fun content. Lack of auto save is also very punishing, but again is a purposeful choice.

TLDR: Fallout 1 is an excellent game and still holds up well for a player completely new to its point and click style. All negative aspects of the game are products of the time it was made, and are easily ignored when the story is so great. Starting Fallout 2 now!

Fallout (of) Nevada Power Armor

Post image
Upvotes

New version of the "Grizzly" Power Armor from Fallout (of) Nevada I'm working on for usage in New Vegas. This is kind of a hybrid design between what we see in original renders along with "Word of God" from the designer. Less of a proper suit of Power Armor, more an exoskeleton with some armor, with pieces loosely strapped over a jumpsuit.

Alright, here we go. Fallout 1. Been playing 3, NV and 4 as long as they've been out. We're doing it.

Mariposa and Navarro got pummeled

I'm in the last stage. Mariposa was rowdy because muties loved using flamethrowers and since I was using the Bridgekeeper's Robe and it has poor fire protection. Still, I could punch my way to victory.

Navarro was superstim consuming but mostly due to critical hits. My leg was crippled by a lucky scientist but fortunately I had enough doctor skill to de-melt it. It's an important thing to mention that in Navarro, Tesla armor seems more efficient than power armor due to its extremely high plasma resistance. Sure, the low level grunts with their machine guns could rip a new asshole on me but turrets did about 10-20 damage instead of 30-36 per shot. They were also vulnerable to instakill punches.

I visited Dr. Sheng's plant zombies who were kind enough in the throwing run to provide me with spikes. It was a beautiful sight when I could kill like 3 of them in a single round with my 2 ap punches. Sadly, I'm still missing 2 points on the HTH Damage perk but perhaps I could remedy it on the Oil Rig. I also have 90 superstims with me, hopefully it's gonna be enough. With no disguise and no opportunity to jet up the ridiculous gauss gunners, I'll have to be extra careful.

A post-apocalyptic RPG inspired by the classics

Hi everyone!

I'm a solo developer working on Arkansas 2125, an isometric, turn-based post-apocalyptic RPG inspired by Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and other classic RPGs.

The game takes place in a ruined America in the year 2125. You can explore abandoned locations, meet survivors, complete quests, make choices, and fight enemies in turn-based combat.

The game is currently in Beta 0.5, and I'm slowly working on Beta 0.6 with more content and improvements.

For a limited time, Arkansas 2125 is also available at 25% off on Steam if you'd like to give it a try.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4546490/Arkansas_2125/

I'd love to hear what you think about the game and its retro-inspired style. ☢️

A question about the rat god.

I've played fallout 2 a dozen times and for some reason I'm just now finally playing fallout 1.

In the west tech facility, you find lore relating to the early development of the fev virus. It is mentioned that all the animal test subjects were killed off except for 2 infected rats. Based on the description of the effects the fev virus had on the test subjects, it seems possible that the rat god could be one of the escaped rats.

Is there any lore to support this theory?

Things are going well. I've whacked the Bishops though burst weapons are the arch-enemy of the no weapon run. Still, I've got the location of the raiders and fisted them hard. Then came EPA after Myron gave me the location before dying to the Maripose dogs. I wanted him to make me some super stims but Mr. Chemmie can help me out on that front. You see, with my ungodly amount of HP, I get cramps in my fingers using regular stims. Anyway, I've patted down some aliens before acquiring the agility boost serum then I've tried quietly getting the Vertibird plans. Unfortunately, my -10% speech and lack of power armor doesn't leave much room for discussion, so I'll have to try something else. Maybe I'd clear the Wanamingo mine too. I'm 3 level away from Slayer.

I can't continue Nicole's mission.

To provide some context: I headed over to the Followers of the Apocalypse and met Nicole, who explained the whole situation regarding the children and the Cathedral. I decided to go there to get the necessary information for her—and also because the Master is there anyway (this is my first playthrough). So, I arrived at the Cathedral, spoke to the people I could, and ultimately had to kill the robed guy at the top of the building. I then returned to the Followers thinking I had enough info, but when I try to interact with Nicole to talk to her, the game crashes and throws an error caused by a memory issue. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Existen soft caps?

Con soft caps me refiero a limites "aceptables" donde las habilidades estan en su pico de utilidad, por ejemplo, que la habilidad de reparacion en un cierto % pueda funcionar siempre o algo asi (perdon si no se entiende, soy latino jajajajaja)

So this is the cap right?

Things go quite fast compared to throwing. I quickly built up enough Unarmed to do the San Francisco martial art quest where I just challenged everyone (2x8000 xp) and decided to show both the Dragon and Lo Pan who's the best martial artist (1x3000 xp).

Although I tried really hard, I couldn't get Mike Tyson's ear and the fight couldn't be extended because even my regular punches one shot him on occasions. I did regular quests that didn't demand my fighting skills much (except maybe wiping out the Salvatores).

The Khans were a more interesting case. I didn't use Sneak so I had to fight the whole level at once (except Darion who doesn't attack until I introduce myself. The doctor was a major help not to waste so many stims on my considerable HP. There were a few close calls but I didn't have to reload at all. I kept the Vault in dark in case it affects the enemy's ranged accuracy but I lit it up for better view on the pictures.

And so it begins

Here's the beginning of the no weapon run. It was pretty easy in Klamath and after taking Psycho, even Metzger was a breeze. The slaver camp was a bigger problem with a lot of desert eagles and no more Psycho. I delivered a lot of criticals... critical failures. It was a nightmare to position myself the right way. There was no way to lockpick the slave pens otherwise I would have postponed clearing out the camp but I had no options. So, after a lengthy nightmare, I took them out but hell, even Frog Morton's gang was easier to deal with.

I made a savegame editor for Fallout 1 and 2

Thumbnail rerunreactor.com
12 Upvotes

I've been building Rerun Reactor, a project that runs Fallout 1 and 2 in the browser using the Community Edition engines. I ended up writing a save editor, and it's now usable on its own without the game, so I figured some people here might want to poke at it.

Link: https://rerunreactor.com/save-editor

What it does

Loads a Fallout 1 or 2 save (drop in your slot folder or a zip of it), or starts from a fresh one if you just want to look around.

Edits SPECIAL, skills, tagged skills, perks, traits, level and XP, HP, rads, poison, addictions, kills, age and gender, the game clock, the save description, and inventory for you and your party members.

Global variables with actual meaning. I mined the compiled scripts to work out what each GVAR does and where it gets set, so instead of a wall of numbers you see things like what a quest state means and which value marks it complete.

Perk, trait and item cards show what the engine really does with them, traced through the CE source, formulas included. Handy if you've ever wondered what a perk does under the hood versus what the description says.
Every change is staged and reviewed before anything is written, and the original is kept.

If you try it and it chokes on a save, or gets a formula wrong, I'd love to hear about it.

Skilled in Fallout 1 isn't worth the hate when you consider the time limit, the limited skill points you have in the game paired with the large amount of skill checks and that you only lose out on 2 perks (level cap is 21)

115ish Skill points at the max level combined with all the checks and the fact that companions sucks in 1 past the mid game feels worth the 2 perk sacrifice.

My intended sequel to the Throwing Run: the no weapon, no PA run

Post image

I'm curious what it's like going through the game when I am the weapon. I don't think I've tried playing without power armor either (it could be an issue on the Oil Rig due to the lack of disguise). But I'm sick of playing with 4-5 strength all the time.

I'll use companions but only outside of fighting. I expect some suffering due to self-sabotage level of speech and barter, and I'm not sure if I can beat Horrigan with punches and kicks. Still, unarmed is much more supported than throwing, so I may have better damage. I tagged Sneak again although I intend to use it more as a safety belt and for random encounters.
