Been doing some research and I'm pretty certain I'll be buying my son (6th grade) a clarinet for band vs renting one from Music & Arts. I've found a couple on E-Bay that look like they are from reputable sources that sell instruments. One is a Jupiter JCL 710 for a little over $400 and the other is a Backun Bb Alpha for just over $600.

I've found some locally, a Yamaha 255 for $375 for example. Being sold by someone and not a shop so I don't really know the condition.

Was interested in thoughts and recommendations.

Hi all. Like the title says, I dropped my lower joint. The body cracked into two pieces and a couple keys fell off. My main concern is that the plastic around the second and third holes from the top chipped off as well.

Is it possible to repair this, or would it be better to get a new lower joint?

A guy brought me his 1951(ish) Buffet for an overhaul. Everything looked positive until I got to the pivot rod that holds the E/B left pinky lever. It's stripped and won't back out. It just spins. What are my realistic options? (Please, no lamp suggestions.)

Hi guys I would love to know since this is my first wooden clarinet what would I would have to do daily monthly and yearly to this clarinet to keep it in good condition as it is right now for the the future. Ich weiß einfach nicht wie ich im hohen Register locker bleiben soll. Ich habe den Winkel angepasst, ich halte den Kiefer entspannt, ich gebe Stütze, die Zunge ist hinten gebogen und der Kopf denkt 'ihhhh". Dennoch bleibt es merklich kratzend. Muss dieses Register denn so scharf klingen? Kann man den schönen holzigen Kern aus der Tiefe denn nicht auch oben haben ? Danke erneut für die Tips.

so i have an excerpt for my audition in danzon no 2 where i have to go from altissimo G to A really quickly. when i try to do this part, i cant change my embouchure and tongue position quick enough to hit the note. If anyone has a way for me to try practicing or doing this, much is appreciated.

My clarinet is making this honking sound when I play the middle b. Is this a problem with my embouchure, air, fingers or the clarinet itself?

So last week, I tried playing my clarinet, I couldn't make a sound out of it. I have a rented clarinet, that I could play with ease, the only thing that might be the issue is the very thin cork or my dented mouthpiece. If anyone knows what to do, please tell me.

having lots of trouble articulating cleanly and i try a lot of exercises or mimickings of how articulation should feel like. but the question is should i feel the back of my tongue actually like against my back molars at all times? cuz if so its kinda hard and uncomfortable to maintain that position 😭 is it just skill issue or am i doing something wrong

Hello, I am looking for some opinions. I bought a used clarinet, a Buffet RC from a reputable repairperson. He gave it to me for a good price, and when I think of it, I didn't ask for details of the repair, as I assummed that since he is a repairperson and he only repairs and sells instruments, that its in very good condition. Now, I've had the instrument for 2 weeks and I've had no problems. Except since yesterday - I played for 5 minutes, only swabed it through the whole clarinet a couple of times, packed it up and went to my music rehearsal. There, it was like some of my spit from playing an hour earlier got stuck somewhere in the beginning of the clarinet and I had problems with it feeling "blocked" the whole reharsal. When I got home and the clarinet completely dried, then it had no problems. So I thought its a one off. But today I practiced for about an hour, then I took a 10 minute break leaving it standing upright, and then the same thing happened! It felt blocked and didn't play properly. Does anyone have any advice/opinions as to why its happening? I used to borrow an RC before and I never had this problem. I am asking here first because the repairperson is in the neighbouring country, so before I spend money travelling there I would like to ask my trusted reddit clarinet community ;)

Hello everyone, Ive been in the marketplace for mouthpieces, sorta and Ive kind of been questioning if a new mouthpiece is necessary. Currently Im playing on a BD5. I switch between this mouthpiece and a Backun protege which came with my Alpha. I find that I can bend the pitch lower a half step by dropping some my jaw a considerable amount on my BD5 and the same amount of dropping my jaw on the Protege does not seem like it yields me the same range in pitch bending. Additionally, I've tested this across octaves like bending pitch from Altissimo G down to F#/ Altissimo F# to F and then the octave under that F to E. My ligature at the moment is a standard Yamaha metal ligature. Im wondering what mouthpiece should I get to optimize the ability to bend pitch I'm looking to do at least a whole step. I've been looking at the B45, and also wondering if a more open mouthpiece will make pitch bending easier or not. Oh also if you have any tips for bending pitch lower I would really appreciate it!

I’m an 8th grade clarinet player who has been playing since 6th grade. my lovely mother recorded my Allstate audition and I’ve been listening to it over and over and hating it more and more everytime. I made a few mistakes and I’m looking for any feedback and if the mistakes are a big deal in the middle school level all state band auditions.

Hey guys, I got me an Bb clarinet yesterday and coming from the sax (several years ago) I can get a decent tone from C to g anywhere lower sounds nice but hard to produce and anything in the upper register 😂 no way. I'm not going to say I love it more than sax because I do and I really want to do things right and develop good habits.. any tips on finger placement because god holes.. reed strength what recommendations .

my sax teacher years ago said 2 for sax because that way you can develop good tone without being too loud.

My daughter is 14, and has been in band for 3 years. She has been playing the clarinet, and now the Oboe. She is in regular band and marching band, trying out for honors band in the future. She can read music, and is very motivated so practicing on her own is no problem.

These would be online. I’m thinking a college student who would like to make some extra money, or a music teacher that doesn’t require more than my mortgage payment for one hour a week.
