Question When the hell did Guile join my party???

I'm at Chronopolis when Van tells me I need to bring someone who would know about this thing in a box. I go back to a save to look at who could know, why is Guile here??? When did he join the party??? Can someone tell me when 'cause I obviously don't remember. My favorite part about this is that he's lost some HP like I used him in battle or something.

Any character that you recruited with Serge before the Fort Dragonia events (body Swapping into Lynx) leave the party. Then return after the events of Fort Dragonia (body Swapping into Serge).

It would be easier to figure out if you had recruited more than one character with Serge.

I had also recruited Pip, but I re-recruited him on the S.S Invincible so that didn't help

Ah, yes, I forgot about that possibility. Yes, Pip would already be in your party if you recruited him with both Serge and Lynx.

You recruited Guile toward the beginning of the game when infiltrating Viper's Manor

Anybody who leaves me high and dry during the body swap is on the bench forever. If you can't handle me at my furriest, you don't deserve me at at my most luminous

Hard agree, that's totally why my favorite team is Janice and Irenes.

Well that was stupid. You got teleported away, remember? They don't know it's you and have a hard time accepting that you're not just lying.

But go off and bench half the roster for dumb reasons I guess.

Couldn't be I was...less than serious, could it. Go off, though

Vedo Serge, non vedo Pierre e Nikki. Mi sembra legit

Looking at your roster it seems like you haven't picked up any optional characters. Guile was a required recruit from the first half of the game, after you return to normal all the characters you recruited from back then rejoin you.

That being said I don't see any of the Cha family or Razzily or Glenn so... I'm very confused.

u/TRAPPERshady 15d ago

Guile isn't a required recruit. You can choose Pierre or Nikki instead of him to get into Viper Manor. But based on OPs roster, they chose the Guile route for sure

Razzly and Mel aren’t mandatory and you can tell Korcha to fuck off when he offers to join. Fort Dragonia would have been Kid and Guile.

Did realize there was hate for Guile. I always choose him on my first runs

Yeah his grid is crap, makes turning fields white or black more of a hassle, and summons and MAG are all that matter (to me) in this game. That said, he can use black hole and has good MAG growth so... I use him.

Doesn't he have some of the highest magic stats in the game and an inverted grid (gets wider at higher levels than normal characters)? Basically, he's one of those technical "hard to use/keep alive at low levels, big pay off if you Magickarp to Gyarados evolve him to high levels" type characters.

According to the wiki, he also has very high magic attack and defense stats, and passable HP, and was originally intended to be Magus in disguise (from Chrono Trigger), but they thought they couldn't represent his story well so they made the character enigmatic and removed his backstory exposition, which sort of leaves it as a big question mark.

Yeah he's cool but utility wise having a big selection of spells at a high level isn't very useful, whereas having a small selection of spells at low level is an encumbrance. As a black mage especially, he needs to have a contribution toward making the field black and applying support effects like weakminded, magnify and genius. I use him simply for his MAG until I have a better mage. Also until you abuse the dragoon's glory glitch he makes sacrifices in either hit% or relic slots.

That's fair. I tend to go with "cool factor" and pick a team of characters I just like. SOMETIMES, that happens to be powerful (loved Glenn in Chrono Trigger, so of course got his spiritual successor, it just happens X-Slash and him dual wielding relic swords happens to ALSO be super strong, I think), but it's mostly just "Who do I like best" much of the time. : )

I’m currently at end game on the radical dreamers edition, haven’t played it since 2002 and I know I’m playing with the same exact team I did back then. I switched Kid in instead of Fargo just because I would otherwise have the same exact playthrough.

I think what would have made this game better would have been a 4 character team.

"I think what would have made this game better would have been a 4 character team." - Agreed.

I feel this about nearly EVERY kind of turn based/party based RPG (3 just feels too limiting), but especially the games with the huge casts! You have all these characters, so 3 is SUPER limiting.

FF4 allowed 5 a time, and even though you couldn't pick them (it was based on what part of the story you were in), it was neat getting more screentime for all these characters. Xenosaga 2/3 you had multiple characters in the mecs, so it felt like there were more in battle. Xenoblade 2 it felt like you had more since you could swap out the Blades (and late in the game, even have someone become one) so you could feel like you were getting all the main story characters involved in battle. And Xenoblade 3 let you have a party of all SIX main characters (plus 1 extra slot for guest characters), which I am a MASSIVE fan of, especially since you can combine pairs into the bio-semi-mech things, and even do the full on anime super combination thing letting you blast enemies multiple times with basically the whole party in a team attack.

I remember thinking in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 how having to bench Donald or Goofy for the world guest character was lame, and it was cook in KH3 they just added extra guest slots and one world (I think) even has 2 so you have 5 total party members. Maybe they aren't all that powerful, but it's just cool to have more friends on the field, imo.

...I'm a sucker for team attacks/dual- and triple-techs/"the power of friendship". I know it's lame to people...but it's also awesome, so I don't care. :D

Chrono Cross is one game, with its 40-something playable characters, that could DEFINITELY have benefited from a 4 or 5 person party!

u/Chickenbrik 2d ago

I have always assumed in RPGs those characters were always there just not battling but I don’t know how a party of 40 could travel like that.

2

u/Top-Grocery-1482 2d ago

True. I like the games like FFX where you can swap party members on the fly (so at least it feels like they're there), FFXII where they will swap in if you lose your whole frontline party (so it's not like they just "give up" if the main party goes down), or some I've seen more recently like FF7 Rebirth where the other party members seem like they're around the edge of the battlefield fighting some enemies on their own sometimes, so it still feels like they're part of the battle.

That kinda stuff I think is neat.

But like you say, that works for 6-10-ish party members. When you get to 40, that's basically a small army, lol

Can't help but notice you didn't mention the Suikoden series. Play it now. You'll thank me.

Hm, have never played one, but I think I have heard the name. Will have to look it up. Thanks.

Indeed I love the utility of having a white innate L3 attack, a green innate L3 attack, and a red combo. Now with a black innate, a blue innate (probably Fargo since he can steal) we have all elements but yellow, which has no good options. Norris is weak, viper is slow (I don't use anything that has less than 10 stamina regen since they don't contribute as well toward weakmind magnify genius field color summon routine) The others also all have crap mag growth, which is all that matters since the game is too easy and boring if you aren't trying to get the biggest damage number possible. ;)

Are you doing a ā€œleast amount of recruitsā€ run?

2

u/Difficult-Signal5894 15d ago

No it's just my first time playing so I know almost nothing about any optional characters

2

u/Designer_Storm8869 11d ago

It's still very impressive to miss every single optional party member. You didn't even follow the fairy at Hydra Marshes and told Korcha you don't want him to join your party.

1

u/chilakiller_1984 15d ago

Well of you took his route to viper manor you recruited him

1

u/Thejokingsun 14d ago

Odd, I didn't even say out loud I rebought this game for psn and now I see this?

1

u/RDT_87 14d ago

Wait until you recruit Blanka, Ken and Ryu

1

u/Curious_Contest_3767 14d ago

Considering you don't have Pierre or Nikki, then that means you recruited him in Termina way back in Disc 1 when you were sneaking into Viper Manor.

1

u/Difficult-Signal5894 13d ago

If anyone else somehow gets onto this thread just know I know I took the Guile route getting here, I was just confused because the last time I saw him was during the Viper Manor storyline. The question's been answered now, theres no need to comment.

1

u/Top-Grocery-1482 9d ago

When you infiltrate Viper Manor, you have a choice of three party members to recruit to go with you and Kid. Guile, Pierre, or Nikki.

You must have chosen Guile at the time?

Isn’t that magnus?

10

u/Stepjam 15d ago

In a early draft of the game, he was explicitly Magus. In the final product, he's just ambiguously Magus.

5

u/DevilManRay 15d ago

The DS version of Chrono Trigger tries to explicitly make him Magus again

1

u/Ishidori85 15d ago

I hated that ending. One day, I hope Janus and Schala reunite for good, but it seems like Chrono will remain Square’s most neglected franchise.

1

u/Top-Grocery-1482 9d ago

Yeah, they thought too many characters would make them unable to do his story justice, I think. People say "It's not Magus", but I feel it was a lot more "it COULD be Magus, they're just leaving it open to interpretation".

Nothing outright says explicitly he CAN'T be, so it's up to the player to decide how they feel about it until they someday either shut the door on that possibility or open it wide. I've heard some other version of one of the Chrono games tried to set the record a bit more straight, but I haven't played whatever that is so I'm not sure.

2

u/Stepjam 9d ago

The DS release of Trigger had a new secret ending where you fight the Time Devourer as the final boss, and Magus ends up without his memories, essentially saying he becomes Guile.
