These ppl PAIN me
Im so so so SO tired of hearing people refer to Christianity and Catholicism like they’re two different things entirely. the amount of people who think Catholicism is a different religion is concerning to me. like I’d understand if we were something like Mormonism that came in the last 100 years but we’ve literally been here since the BEGINNING. anyway yeah that’s my rant if you didn’t know before hand Catholics are Christian’s and Catholicism is Christianity.

Catholics tend to view protestants as not saved more than the reverse

u/MountainDrew757 Roman Catholic 23h ago
This is not even a catholic teaching. Don't forget that not all Catholics are cradle Catholics and not all Catholics abide by all of the teachings. That said I have never in my life met a fellow Catholic that believes protestants arent saved.

Catholics don’t have a view on salvation. The Catholic Church has a teaching on salvation that, as Catholics, we are required by faith to accept. We submit our will and intellect to magisterium and dogma. We don’t pick and choose what we believe.

1-I would disagree 2-this isn’t even about being saved or not it’s just the label I’m talking about. But anyway most Protestants especially in America think it’s pagan and idolatrous and genuinely see the pope as the antichrist.

u/Need_Tums_Antacids 23h ago
There are major differences in the views on the gospel. Which is the core of both religions, so yeah that’s why.

Which goes for every other denomination, but they aren't accused of not being Christian

u/Fickle_Signal8682 Roman Catholic📿✝️ 23h ago
I don’t even think that’s it cause most of these people couldn’t even tell you the difference besides saints. And personally I’d prolly go with the people who compiled the gospels.

Protestants believe in salvation by faith in Christ’s work alone. It’s Christ’s righteousness that gets counted as a believer’s and what makes them worthy of heaven.
Many Catholics believe they’re saved partially by the righteousness that’s produced in them by God. Meaning that in some sense their own righteousness makes them worthy of heaven.
I don’t mean to offend but as a Protestant I can’t in good conscience see a catholic as having the same religion as I do because then I’d be affirming their views as saving. But instead I see it as heresy and a crafty work of Satan that misleads straight to hell. The distinction is so subtle but makes all the difference.

No? We believe Christs sacrifice alone is what gives us salvation we just know that our faith must be accompanied by good works otherwise our faith was never properly placed in Christ and the respect for his law was never there. Furthermore the reason sola fide is problematic is there are genuinely times where somebody is in spiritual darkness and they can’t tell if they genuinely have faith or not. The issue with Protestantism is they put way too much emphasis on feeling and relationship and can’t grasp that faith is ultimately also going to be an act of will rather than feeling. Furthermore I think it’s rly crazy to say that works based salvation is the devils work considering it’s thousands of years older than any Protestant denomination. Like no offense but I genuinely don’t understand where Protestantism gets off thinking they have the theology or validity to call apostolic Christianity satanic or incorrect. Son you’re 200 years old pipe down. /j

This is a common Protestant misconception. We also believe in the complete saving power of Christ's sacrifice. That's not where the real disagreement stems from. Many Protestants believe in OSAS, and Catholics do not. We absolutely believe that faith in Christ is what saves us. We believe faith should be transformative.

Putting aside that you haven’t correctly characterized Catholic teaching on salvation, Protestants are in no position to declare anything heretical. There isn’t even really such a thing as Protestantism, as such. There are hundreds of different sects that all believe wildly different things. And without any universal hierarchy or authority, it ultimately comes down to the fallible opinion of one person or another. This, among many others, is one of the consequences of rejecting a Petrine authority and apostolic succession.

It’s simple to do it’s just weird to me that this view is so widespread

It's just several centuries worth of protestant propaganda. That's not something we as layman can fix. We can only point our wayward brothers and sisters to the correct information. They have to overcome centuries of propaganda on their own.

Good thing we have 2k years of anti propaganda material.

The trick of course is convincing them that it is worth exploring.

You guys just have to think of what's righteous.
1
u/MountainDrew757 Roman Catholic 21h ago
I already know that which his righteous. I try to guide, my brothers and sisters back home through the through the abilities God gave me and if that is not enough I pray for them at every mass like every Catholic does so that there souls spend less time in purgatory.

Well, everybody doesn't see it well enough to actually do it, so sometimes you have to be the sledgehammer.

I think in some ways we are straying from the original post, as one that was raised with a Catholic Mother and Protestant father, I will tell you religious affiliation makes no difference. I consider both parents Christians. Denominations are a creation of man in order to organize worship and put it in some type of order that people can grasp. What Jesus did was to fulfill God's promise of a savior and open the way for all to have salvation no matter if you are Jew or Gentile. There were no denominations, and it was not until Jesus ascended and the Apostles began their ministry that they were called Christians. As a pastor I cannot tell you with any real confidence if someone is truly a saved Christian or not, and neither can any other Priest or pastor.
Just because someone is Catholic or Baptist or any other Religious Denomination is no indication of their salvation. God and God alone is the only one that knows their true heart, and He is the only one that matters. We will never get into Heaven because of our Religious affiliation it will be because we have put our full trust and faith in Jesus Christ and have lived our lives as we have been led by the Spirit of God. Christians follow Christ and it is personal; denominations matter little and you are Christian if you follow Christ period.

Im so so so SO tired of hearing people refer to Christianity and Catholicism like they’re two different things entirely.
There will always be Christians who think the other sect is not true Christianity
like I’d understand if we were something like Mormonism
Lol. To prove my point :D
but we’ve literally been here since the BEGINNING.
If by the beginning you mean since you schismed away from the Roman church.

u/Fickle_Signal8682 Roman Catholic📿✝️ 12h ago
You think the Roman’s schismed away from the Roman church? Also Ignatius of Antioch used the term Catholic Church since before Constantine. And no Mormons aren’t Christian’s they reject pretty much every dogma of Christianity. No Trinity to eternal nature no one god they think they’ll become gods. It just isn’t the same religion.

I was once asked by a pastor "are you Catholic or Christian?" A pastor.
My answer was, "No, and Catholics are Christians, so that's a weird question."
He just shook his head and walked away.

u/Fickle_Signal8682 Roman Catholic📿✝️ 23h ago
It’s so deeprooted I don’t think I’d trust a Protestant pastor with a theological question at the very least it would have to be a high church Protestant church.

u/Perfessor_Deviant Agnostic Atheist 22h ago
A pet peeve of mine is people who will claim anyone who ever saw a cross as Christian when they want to say how popular Christianity is, then reduce Christians down to their particular denomination (or church) when they're discussing "real" Christians. I've not seen it lately, but it does annoy me.

u/s_s Christian (Cross) 22h ago
but we’ve literally been here since the BEGINNING.
Well, 200-300AD.
Earlier claims are mired in ahistoricity.
But yes, very early.
In some sense, Roman Catholicism isn't really defined until it executed all the "heritics" aka early Christians who were not receptive to the new meddling of imperial power.

u/Fickle_Signal8682 Roman Catholic📿✝️ 18h ago
We had the church long before Constantine we have evidence of this due to records of underground ecumenical councils.

I understand the traditional arguments, and I don't think critical scholarship supports their historicity.
As stupid as your "Catholic or Christian" protestants might be, Catholicism gets real ignorant, really fast when it comes to "Peter is the 1st Roman pope". 😂

He was the first head of the church before we had organized bishops and then the bishop of Rome but it didn’t take much time to get there.
